I am a big fan of the early 90s alternative rock/grunge and then the bands that spawned from them.

Soundgarden
Temple of the Dog
Chris Cornell
Alice in Chains
Mad Season
Screaming Trees
Stone Temple Pilots
Tool
Rage Against the Machine
A Perfect Circle
Foo Fighters
Jerry Cantrell
Mark Lanegan

I am pretty set in my ways, and really don't even know where to begin when looking to expand my musical tastes.

Some newer bands that I can tolerate once in a while are Wolfmother, The White Stripes and Muse, though none as much as the ones I previously mentioned.

If anyone could give me a couple of suggestions for some newer bands, I would appreciate it.

These are two bands that are similar in sound...
btw Youtubes' quality stinks...

Dead Soul Tribe
* because you said you like Tool and Alice In Chains. A good Progressive Metal band that uses many tribal rhythmic sounds. I think they've split now, but the albums they've released are all solid.

The Butterfly Effect
* Aussies have some good Prog. bands. This is one of the first Aussie bands to adopt and develop that sound...

---

Sleep Parade
* Okay one more... this one is epic (brand new Aussie band that I'm only just getting into). I love the middle section of this song, the chanting.

Default I want to find British Bands

Hey, everyone, I'm an American, and I just realized the other day after finding out about this band Elbow that I really don't know a lot of British music. As in, so far I listen to Coldplay, Funeral for a Friend and very soon, Elbow.

So if there are any brits on here, or I guess anyone else who knows good british bands I probably wouldn't know already, could you guys point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

Default Music like Edith Piaf and The Ink Spots

The vinyl sound is nice but both have strong genres about love and most of their music is at a slow bpm with minimal instruments, mostly stringed (such as ones in the guitar-like family).

Any other similar artists within the same time period (I guess 30s/40s, a tiny bit before the popular Sinatra era) matching these criteria?

Anyone know of anything similar to the vocals in alice practice and love and caring by Crystal Castles? I'm obsessed with those two songs.

My faith in modern rock music is well and truly lost, I really can't seem to find many bands worth listening to, I keep finding horrible screamo bands (don't mind a bit of shouting in bands, but when they scream through an entire song it's like STFU.) or awful emo bands.

Anyone got any modern (from the 00s) bands worth listening to?

I also wouldn't mind any folk type stuff, in the vein of Elliott Smith or Neutral Hotel Milk. It can be a singer songwriter or a band.

Thanks to anyone who can help

Even though Bernard Fanning is a part of Powderfinger and they started before the 00's I'd like to suggest this...

Tea & Sympathy
His solo album is amazing and was released in 2005. You should check that out if you didn't know about it. It's folky and very acoustic, great songwriting and I think he sounds better here than he does in Powderfinger. You may have already heard 'Wish You Well' as it was huge here in Australia and I think it was big in the UK too. the album has a lot of stand outs but I couldn't find vids for all the songs I wanted to post, sorry.

A few tasters:
