Another great, wonderful, amazing thing about music, is jamming with your friends. Whether you're sharing an album and just listening together, or playing together (my preference), it's a truly wonderful thing.

#60 & 1/2 The Violin

Kudos and good karmic vibes to whomever it was that said; "lets make an hour glass shaped box of spruce attach a maple neck barely 20 cm long and string it with the intestines of sheep. We'll tune it to perfect fifths and tickle it with a bow strung with...what else but the mane hair of a horse."

What's incredibly fucking beautiful to me about music is that someone so wanted to express themselves through sound and melody that they fashioned this and so many other great instruments to do so.

It's a tangible reflection of the immense creativity and passion in the construction and relating of music; both the sound we hear and the way it makes us feel.

59-Amateurs

Maybe this is more heavily associated with rock music. I love the fact that bands that can barely play their instruments, or have a limited musical vocabulary,or are as sloppy as hell can make beautiful pieces of art:

Germs
Joy Division
Blue Cheer
Stooges

One thing I love about music is the instruments, all of them, I can't really think of one I don't like, they all have something special about their tone and they add a unique flavor to a song. I also love people who still make new radical instruments for a living, that to me is an important musical contribution that gets overlooked. Chapman sticks <3<3<3

Anyway, kudos for adding bass, even bassists for bands I don't particarly like, I have to admire them when they have the balls to take over a song and not just be the guitarist's bitch. Bassists really don't get enough credit.

And seconded on the violin too. I hate that people think it's a lame gimmick whenever instruments outside of guitar/drums/bass/keys are used in rock music. That's just a bunch of rubbish, I feel rock music is a bit too safe when it comes to the "standard" rock band ensemble. Violins really can rawk you know.

So yeah, hooray for all the prog bands that aren't afraid of cranking out a bichin' Fiddle solo. Gentle Giant, Hawkwind, Roxy Music, Magma, Caravan, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Comus and David Cross era King Crimson.

EDIT: Not the David Cross you're thinking of.

I totally agree with this. Any instrument can be used in a way that is fantastic, hell I've even heard kazoo done in a way I enjoyed before.

Never been big on those guys to tell the truth, I gave His 'n' Hers a listen and just didn't care for it. Jarvis Cocker is an amusing personality though.

I forgot to mention John Cale, he deserves a shout out.
