Smile 1990!!!

Five masterpieces. And some other good albums, like Metallica, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Laughing Stock, Ten.
The above is a definite argument for '91. I have a soft spot for Teenage Fanclub and My Bloody Valentine!

I chose 1990 for good reason:

Depeche Mode - Violator
Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas
Jane's Addiction - Ritual de lo Habitual
Pixies - Bossanova
Sinead O'Connor - I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got
Sonic Youth - Goo
Peter Murphy - Deep
Concrete Blonde - Bloodletting
Happy Mondays - Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches
Ride - Nowhere
Pet Shop Boys - Behaviour
They Might Be Giants - Flood
The Breeders - Pod
Alice in Chains - Facelift
The Fall - Extricate

...and of course: LL Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out

Pretty awesome year in music, huh?

I picked 1996 because:

- Tori Amos, 'Boys for Pele'
- Tool, 'Aenima'
- Chris Isaak makes a guest appearance on Friends. (I love Chris Isaak)
- Crowded House plays their final concert on the steps of the Sydney Opera House in Australia, in front of an audience of almost 200,000. Proceeds from this concert went to charity.
- Singer Tori Amos is sued when a man crashes his car after being distracted by a billboard advertising her album. The billboard featured a photo of Amos breastfeeding a piglet. (Controversial music/ album covers at their best)
- The 'Macarena' makes its debut.

And, other albums I enjoy but aren't as significant that were released in 1996:
- Korn, 'Life is Peachy'
- Porcupine Tree, ' Signify'

EDIT (for fear of flaming): I would like to reinforce that my decision is based on personal opinion and this year is probably by far not the best year in music ever. However, I have only been alive since the '80s and thus did not witness first hand all of the wonderful musical revolutions that took place before then. I find myself unfit to judge which year was musically the best year, and so my choice is based on personal preference and musical events that affected me personally.

Ah, that album was good. After Life Is Peachy (with the cool cover) they just got worse and worse.

Signify was ****ing fantastic. Definitely one of Steve Wilson's best.

Life Is Peachy gave me high hopes for Korn... which were unfortunately shattered. Issues wasn't too bad. But other than that.

Everything after it in my opinion is jst plain garbage. Really the only reason I do respect LIP is because it started the genre of Nu Metal, which for the most part really blows, but gives it some originality. And god know the amount of bands trying to replicate that album.

Yeah I suppose I agree. I liked it because it seemed at the time so crazy and different. I'm really not into much else of their stuff but I have seen them live a few times and still have a lot of respect for the band. Unlike many others - there is a lot of Korn-hate out there.

Faith No More was doing the same thing five years earlier. The Real Thing represented an enormous influence on metal in general, but nu-metal in particular. Which sucks, because it still resulted in some of the most generic music.

I have heard that before but I fail to see to big a similarity in the two. I see where your coming though.

And yes, thats typically what it resulted in. I think that's because its the after-after product of grunge. Can only take something so far.
