Best year in music

Which of the last 50 years has been the best in terms of music in your opinion?

(It's gonna take a while to make the poll, bear with me)

Alfred 11-16-2008 06:53 PM

Damn, I'll get back to you on this one. It's going to be a year from 1977-present, no doubt, though.

dac 11-16-2008 07:35 PM

Let me do some research...

Double X 11-16-2008 08:28 PM

1967 or 1969. Probably. Or 1979.

lucifer_sam 11-16-2008 08:31 PM

1968. :)

khfreek 11-16-2008 08:54 PM

1990, for the following albums:

Cowboys from Hell
Rust in Peace
Ah Via Musicom
Facelift
Ritual de lo Habitual
Painkiller
Souls of Black
Passion and Warfare
Frizzle Fry
Fear of a Black Planet
Time's Up
Persistance of Time
Empire
Left Hand Path

That's all I got, but they're good ones all right.

simplephysics 11-16-2008 08:56 PM

1991, with Screamadelica, Nevermind, Loveless... the rest was just icing on the cake.

Yeah.

Electric Ladyland
White Light/White Heat
The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society
The White Album

All brilliant albums.
Zappa also released his first solo album in 68, but I haven't listened to it.

tdoc210 11-16-2008 09:37 PM

93

mr. goth glam 11-16-2008 09:48 PM

I think I have to go with 1993 or possibly, 1994. Personal reasons, mostly, since this was the point in my life when I really began to absorb music and take it seriously.

As far as historical importance goes, I couldn't even venture a guess on which year would be the best.

Zarko 11-16-2008 10:49 PM

Off the top of my head 69 seems tops...

In A Silent Way - Davis
Court of the Crimson King
Let It Bleed
The Velvet Underground
Hot Rats
Karma - Pharaoh Sanders
At San Quentin
Arthur or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire
Hot buttered Soul
Willy and the Poor Boys
Trout Mask Replica
Green River
Uncle Meat
Bayou Country
Kick Out The Jams
Nipples
Ummagumma I think...

Janszoon 11-16-2008 10:50 PM

1329 without a doubt.

Zarko 11-16-2008 11:00 PM

1988 of course was nice...

Tender Prey - Nick Cave
...Nation of millions - Public Enemy
You Can't Do That on Stage - Frank Zappa
Transcendence - Crimson Glory
The Serpents Egg - Dead Can Dance
Last Exit - Iron Path
Danzig - Danzig
Delicate Sounds of Thunder - Pink Floyd

RoemerMW 11-16-2008 11:00 PM

1966

The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
Revolver

My two favorite albums of all time.

Plus
Blonde on Blonde
Pet Sounds
Freak Out!
Face to Face
Aftermath
Animalism
The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators
River Deep - Mountain High
Fresh Cream
Fifth Dimension
How Does That Grab You?
Swinging Doors and the Bottle Let Me Down
The Magic City

ins0mniac 11-17-2008 01:43 AM

Personally? '06. That's just because I was alive and that's the year that influenced me the most.

Arab Strap-The Last Romance
Arctic Monkeys-Whatever People Say I am...
Beck - The Information
Brandtson - Hello, Control
The Decemberist - The Crane Wife
The Dresden Dolls - Yes, Virginia...
Explosions In The Sky - All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone
Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
The Klaxons - Myths of the Near Future
Man Man - Six Demon Bag
Massive Attack - Collected
Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?
She Wants Revenge- She Wants Revenge
Silversun Pickups - Carnavas
TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
and so on.

Applenux 11-17-2008 02:26 AM

1967 : Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band ! :D

Demonoid 11-17-2008 04:58 AM

Best year in music...Honestly, I'm not really sure. Not having a 'clear favorite band/artist' doesn't really help. There are many bands I like almost equally. In terms of "Importance", there are quite a few choices there as well. I think It'll take me a while to sort this out.

Zer0 11-17-2008 05:02 AM

1988 :D

All because of:
Daydream Nation
Bug
Surfer Rosa
Isn't Anything

Next would be 1991

jackhammer 11-17-2008 05:04 AM

This is one I cannot answer. One from each deacde would have been a better choice methinks.

Yeah maybe 4/5 different threads and polls asking the best from a decade, then add all those years in one poll after... A bit overwhelming with so many in one poll.

jackhammer 11-17-2008 05:14 AM

Maybe we can sort something like that out. I will PM Monkey and see what he thinks.

Bulldog 11-17-2008 07:28 AM

Well, '77 sprung to mind first for me, so it's the one I'll go with.

Nevermind the Bollocks
Germ-Free Adolescents
Spiral Scratch EP
The Clash
Aja
Heroes
Low
The Idiot
Lust For Life
My Aim Is True

...to name just 10.

Not forgetting Animals. Tsskk ;)

Hilary 11-17-2008 11:48 AM

Yeah, something like decades or even a few years grouped together would be easier/better.

lucifer_sam 11-17-2008 12:18 PM

We already have threads like those. I think Best Decade in Music was one and Best Era of Music was another...

skips 11-17-2008 12:54 PM

I picked 1991 with

Spiderland, Loveless, Laughing Stock, Nevermind, Screamadelica, Blue Lines, Goat, Sebadoh III, Trompe Le Monde and others.

over

1979 with my three favorite albums of the 1970s:

Entertainment!, Specials, Unknown Pleasures plus other stuff like the Raincoats s/t and Y.

^ Agreed. Leave Monkey's thread alone Lee...or are you too scared to choose? ;)

Minstrel 11-17-2008 01:13 PM

1991:

Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Nirvana - Nevermind
Slint - Spiderland
Primal Scream - Screamadelica

Five masterpieces. And some other good albums, like Metallica, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Laughing Stock, Ten.

No I know I will immediatedly rue my decision once picked. Suffice to say I will leave the poll well alone and desist from choosing.

Well I'm going for 1977. Not particularly for the quality of music this year was responsible for, but for the quality of music this year was responsible for.
Yes I know it's an obvious choice.

Folkie2 11-17-2008 01:36 PM

1967-69 best years in music with zeppelin and hendrix and dylan all good things

Alfred 11-17-2008 02:30 PM

I still don't think I can vote, but I'm tempted to go for 2006, though 2008 has been pretty good. A year from the 90's would be another option. Might go for 1977, though, not so much because I'm familiar with that year, but because of the punk rock explosion.

I just don't know.

khfreek 11-17-2008 02:32 PM

Shit, I could have sworn Metallica was 1990. Oh well, I still like 1990.

Seltzer 11-17-2008 03:15 PM

I don't know about best, but 1969 was a good year. Some immortal jazz albums, some folk, birth of prog and krautrock, plenty of classic rock, Zappa's greatest album IMO and loads of psychedelic gems I haven't mentioned. And any other music of which I'm ignorant.

King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
Beatles - Abbey Road
Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
The Kinks - Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire)
Amon Duul - Phallus Dei
Pink Floyd - Ummagumma
Soft Machine - Second
Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed
Frank Zappa - Hot Rats
Led Zeppelin - I and II
Fleetwood Mac - English Rose
Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left
Sly - Stand!
Can - Monster Movie
Yes - S/T
Bob Dylan - Nashville Skyline
CCR - Willy and the Poor Boys
Allman Brothers Band - Debut S/T
Os Mutantes - Mutantes
Pentangle - Basket of Light
Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica

Urban Hat€monger ? 11-17-2008 05:22 PM

Depends what I want to listen to.

I mean if i'm in the mood to listen to some banging techno i'm not likely to vote for 1969 or 1977 am I.

right-track 11-17-2008 05:29 PM

Lets assume you're in an objective mood...

Probably the best line up for any of the years, but I can't settle on just one year.

Astronomer 11-18-2008 12:36 AM

I had a long and hard think about this and cannot possibly settle on just one year. Wayyy too hard.

mmm, thinking about it, I might go for 1969 myself! There are a few more, which I THINK released that year, but need to check my facts. Mainly Scott walker, White Noise and a few more lesser known stuff I like which released around that time. I keep forgetting the release dates :banghead:
