Anybody said John Mayer and the "singers" from Suicide Silence and WhiteChapel. Two epicly inferior bands- as most deathcore is

scottsy 09-25-2010 09:14 PM

I'm a bad singer. Awful. Just plain terrible.

ThePhanastasio 09-25-2010 10:52 PM

I like these two guys, but I'm aware neither one of them can sing.

Trey Anastasio
Bob Dylan

Trey Anastasio, unfortunately, doesn't seem aware at this point in his career that he can't sing, and that's kind of strange.

Bob Dylan probably knows.

Justin Bieber... why, oh why are we afflicted with such dross...

TumorAttitude 09-26-2010 05:55 PM

Justin Bieber can totally sing. He's just the most boring person on the planet.

loveissucide 09-26-2010 06:10 PM

Randy Newman, Stephen Malkmus, Mark E Smith, Donald ***en, Frank Black Francis, John Darnielle.
To quote Silver Jews' frontman and presiding genius David Berman, "All my favourite singers can't sing"

He's... like... 14

333 09-26-2010 11:41 PM

Haha, I don't have ten but the only one that comes to mind with a legitimate band and reputation is Les Claypool. Those bass riffs totally make up for some of the terrible vocs he does though.

RVCA 09-26-2010 11:43 PM

Who would kill me if I said Joey Ramone and Joe Strummer can't sing?

Halpert 09-27-2010 05:08 PM

Can't sing: Fat Mike(NoFX) Tom DeLonge(blink-182/Angels & Airwaves)
both have distinctive voices for the bands they're in..so I don't know if that makes em good or not.

Dude Fa‎gen has a great voice. In my mind it's one of the more under-appreciated voices in music, because while he doesn't use it in a show-offy way he actually is a pretty decent singer.

Whaaaaaat, I love his voice. It fits the music perfectly. And even if you're looking for "traditional singing" there are much worse than him.

Joe Strummer can`t sing, but the Clash sound was far more about their eclectic musical ideas, message and lyrics than his voice.

James 09-28-2010 05:56 AM

Seriously who gives a **** whether a musician "can sing". If we really cared we'd all be listening to Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.

Superhast 09-28-2010 10:32 AM

Håkan Hellström (one of Swedens biggest artists). He ain't good, but he is still a loved singer.

Erm, nah, I think it's kind of important. We want our singers to sing well, and our guitarists to guitar well, and our drummers to drum well, etc

Imagine how boring a football game would be if nobody were any good at it

Sansa Stark 09-28-2010 11:38 AM

Obviously you don't know shiite about punk rock

Eh, you just compared football to music! Well, music can get away with not having a certain technical level, because it can bring an emotional intensity instead. It's called an expression. If it's successful it can move us very deeply. I'm sure football players also bring a lot of emotions when they play, and we can admire them for that, but without some technical level, it won't win them a game. There are no points for emotions and aesthetics in football, right.

Right, it wasn't an absolute comparison. I was just pointing out that I, personally, tend to enjoy music more when the singer can actually sing.

James 09-28-2010 12:36 PM

Football is awful no matter what. I don't think good vocals matter.

downwardspiral 09-28-2010 12:42 PM

Besides I don't think it's really all that possible to define a good singer. The masses would probably say, like James said, singers like Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera. No matter what people say, Hole are an awesome band, but by those standards Courtney Love isn't a 'good' singer, but she's good because her style falls in line with the kind of music she's portraying.

This thread is dumb.

jnf 09-28-2010 04:56 PM

I only judge the music for how good the quality of the arrangement is. I don't really care for singing, but yes there are several singers out there like Miley Cyrus who is bad at singing, but its not her voice, its the type of songs she does, they don't flow well with her voice. If I were to be famous for the songs I make, then I would be under the 'Can't Sing category of this thread, but at least the music is good. I also think that Celine Dion isn't that bad, but I would like to know why in paticular she is bad.

Dino Spumoni 09-29-2010 10:20 PM

Well..I'm too lazy to go through the first 11 pages of this thread, but I'm sure someone has mentioned him already.

Robert Zimmerman

Without autotune most popular singers these days would be totally screwed. And that's coming from a former vocal coach with 27 years experience. Yes! I am practically ancient but I can still hear. (Thanks God!)

Queen Boo 10-01-2010 10:12 PM

Colin Blunstone of the Zombies can sing about four notes......

Paedantic Basterd 10-01-2010 10:36 PM

Daniel Smith of Danielson. Has a knack for melody, and the worst singing voice known to man.

scottsy 10-03-2010 08:56 AM

I hate performers that are technically great but have absolutely zero to say with their golden pipes. I also hate vocal gymnastics in ANY song, which is why American Idol drives me absolutely batty. Not a single contestant on the show ever sings a song and just respects the song for its musical qualities, it's always a platform for projecting themselves... which is why I think shows like that are horrible for the evolution of music as an art form.

But really it's whatI should expect from a TV show that is really primarily about the cult of personality more than anything else...

But I digress...

Technical singing talent is pointless when it completely lacks direction, purpose or respect for the art of songwriting and the broader emotional aims of music in general.

I agree. American Idol contestants technically know how to sing for themselves, but they don't know how to sing for a song. It's really just showing off.

No offense, but anyone can rap, it's just the things you say that get judged.
