cripes. what about the immense popularity of nickelback? and bands like my chemical romance? this is all billboard top 10 material. and, regardless of whether or not you think it merits the title, it IS rock music! rock per se has not lost its mainstream credentials.

also, 'rock' is able to refer to an almost indefinite number of sub-genres including all those little movements within 'indie'/alternative, which are really quite trendy these days.

it's RAP music that has lost a huge amount of its mainstream credibility in recent years. sales have plummeted, and there are FAR FAR less names making it big.

let's take a real look at the billboard top 10 right now:

two beyonce songs (not rap), two TI songs (neither are really rap and the main focus in both is on the sung vocals), two kanye west songs (neither of which are rap!), lady gaga, taylor swift, kate perry and britney spears (yeah - um... not rap!).

further down in 11-20 we have another britney spears song, a song by Pink, Ne-Yo, Akon, a couple of Rihanna songs... hell, even a song by Nickelback. A few rap tracks here and there, but it is NOT the dominant popular format by any stretch of the imagination.

So then, what is the dominant format? I'll tell ya: easy-listening pop. just like it always has been. if you think that billboard has ever been dominated by rock music at any point since the 1980s then sorry but you are sorely mistaken. take a look at a top ten from the 80s and you'll find much the same facts as those we see today. even in the early nineties, urban contemp. music was always more popular in the mainstream than rock. and has continued to be more popular for the last 15 years than rap, too.

All I want to make are mainstream hits.

I like to think that my band is going to be best band ever and is going to shift attention away from all the music that goes on now, because that's not going anywhere. Yup it's true.

cutting edge acts very rarely have any place in mainstream music. that is because mainstream music is tailored to a mass audience. most people want easy listening music, nothing challenging or demanding either in the music or the lyrics.

most people are not music geeks. only music geeks are interested in cutting edge music. if you want to appeal to the masses, then it won't be through 'being the best band ever'. it'll be through fitting in with the current fashion and trends, whatever they may be.

I should of made it more clear about how seperate those statements were. I was making a joke and then I was stating on another note on how much I rule.

It drives me nuts that MTV barley plays music anymore.. if they do its rap or r&b. Now i dont mind the ppl who like it but i remember in the mid 90's you could still watch a rock video or two. I just think that things have gone down hill and now ppl are more concearned with the BS that is spoonfed to them.
I want the Rock to be played in between Cribs you know. I just feel that in this materialistic world that we live in more so now than ever ppl dont even care about the music they care about things that surround it. Rap videos to me are basically billboards for clothes and other items.
And i guess that what ppl want right now... Its has no meaning...

This is pretty much all MTV plays.
However, if you live in the UK (im assuming its just the UK), then why don't you try Kerrang!? Yes, i know its pretty much mainstream, but its about the closest we can get. Also, Suzz isn't a bad channel, and it plays some older stuff.
As for my opinion.. i think that people are too into listening to "fashionable" mainstream pop crap.. well, thats being too general, i do like the occasional song. I woud like their to be somewhere small, local bands can get a mention, as they are sometimes better than the mainstream.

So, when you say "can we get deeper" you really mean "can we agree to your opinion."

Your over-generalization of a genre is hilarious. The exact same arguments about MTV rap can be made about MTV rock.

If you care about music and not the "things that surround it" why are you even watching MTV in the first place? MTV's purpose since it started has been to promote the image of popular bands, often at the expense of the music.
