Basically YOU have to seek out music and not be bullied by the mainstream media as to what THEY think you should seek out. I very very rarely watch any music channels at all and I don't buy any mainstream music magazines.

Like what you want to like and ignore all that MTV crap.

A very good point.
I do watch music channels, but rarely see a new band i like.
Internet research is a very good, and rewarding thing.
A lot of the bands i now like are bands ive found through my own research.

there still are rock videos played on mtv. possibly by the chilis, or nickelback, or my chemical romance or their ilk. you might say this isn't rock. guess what. NOBODY GIVES A CRAP. it might be absolute shite but it is still rock. furthermore, the type of rock they used to play on mtv in the 90s was ALSO the crap, garbage type of rock. the only difference is that YOU like that type of rock. the reason it isn't played any more is because that style of mainstream rock has gone out of fashion, and the new current crap one has come in.

very little has really changed, all in all. I used to watch music channels all the TIME in the mid-90s back in my teens. guess what. it was mostly rap or r&b or pop, or some urban format or other. it's been like that pretty much since ever. the only thing that's changed now is that people remember the old days in a way that is unfaithful to what they really were.

I dont watch MTV Just catch it flipping through. I dont watch much TV to be exact. Its all the same crap. Every commercial is about american idol or what else they want me to buy that i really dont need. I actually broke down (which almost contidicts my last statement)and got xm radio to be able to get my rock stations. Where i live there is only one and they dont play much thats worth listening to. I think you can understand what im talking about. Maybe its just here but it sucks.

The solution to your problem: stop listening to the bloody radio and watching crappy music channels and listen to what YOU want to listen to instead. You know, CDs? MP3s? Whatever takes your fancy.

With xm i can listen to what i want. Think about this though... So you say that the mainstream bullies?? I thought that they looked at demographics and things like that to tell them what sells. Its kind of supply and demand. So is anyone really bullied?? I think that ppl seriously need to think that over before they post. Did you think for a second that nirvana, stp, pearl jam, smashing pumpkins or any 90's bands in the rock genre were manufactured? No they didnt have to be cause they just worked. I know that the rebuttle is going to be that the big wigs knew that that was what ppl wanted to hear. And if pop and r&b is what ppl want to hear then my thread makes sense. Will rock ever be as big as it used to be in the 70's 80's and 90's. Hell even the 60's. Who was bigger that elvis or the beatles?

The answer to my question is probably going to end up being no. Reason? Rock videos dont sell anymore than there records and show tickets. Other types of music offer all kinds of crap to buy. think about that to.

yes, I understand what you mean. It's a classic case of chicken or egg. However, the truth is that it all begins with the record companies. They are the ones who are capable of distributing a type of music to the mainstream. The mainstream then react, either in a positive way or a negative way. If they react positively, then bingo, the record company keep pushing that type of music until it goes out of fashion. This IS what happened with grunge music.

You are right about it being supply and demand. However, the demand is largely manufactured by big-dollar marketing. The more record companies try to push a type of music, the more likely the mainstream are to buy into it.

It always was like that. Only difference is, back in say the 1960s, record companies would actually put out weird types of music that they were unsure would sell. They took the risk. As a result, the mainstream got a better range of music.
