My favourite qotsa album actually. Not quite as aggressive as their other stuff, but still very dark.

Yeah I think the more melodic poppy songs compliment their sound really well.

I love the angular, basey opener, as well as the funky yet dark and badass "Smooth sailing". Some of the ballads are really good too (vampyre of time and memory comes to mind).

From what I've read, the album was written from a way darker place than other stuff, and it comes through in the sound and lyrics.

Can't go wrong with Zorn, but this is seriously one of his best projects and albums (Alef by Masada).
