The World I Know - Collective Soul

Molecules 03-13-2009 04:42 PM

I am sifting through lots of dubstep, especially 2003-2006 and the DMZ label, for potential mix-making. Just the real dread, the dark and downbeat stuff. Turns out the early plates from DMZ are going for upwards of 100 quid on discogs at the mo.

John Legend - "Save Room"

I love the feel of this song...it just get's me going. The lyrics are simple, but it's still a good jam.

Fave lines:
"This just might hurt a little
love hurts sometimes when you do it right
dont be afraid of a little bit of pain
pleasure is on the other side."

ixtlan22 03-13-2009 07:12 PM

Ligeti!!! Right now.

Schizotypic 03-13-2009 07:37 PM

Right now I'm listening to Rid Of Me, the first song on the album Rid of Me by PJ Harvey, 1993.
A fantastic and track with energy fukking busting out of it, give it a listen.

Tie yourself to me
No one else
No, youre not rid of me
Hmm youre not rid of me

Night and day I breathe
Ah hah ay
Hey, youre not rid of me
Yeah, youre not rid of me
Yeah, youre not rid of me
Yeah, youre not rid of me

I beg you, my darling
Dont leave me, Im hurting

Lick my legs Im on fire
Lick my legs of desire

Ill tie your legs
Keep you against my chest
Oh, youre not rid of me
Yeah, youre not rid of me
Ill make you lick my injuries
Im gonna twist your head off, see

Till you say dont you wish you never never met her?
Dont you dont you wish you never never met her?
Dont you dont you wish you never never met her?
Dont you dont you wish you never never met her?

I beg you my darling
Dont leave me, Im hurting
Big lonely above everything
Above everyday, Im hurting

Lick my legs, Im on fire
Lick my legs of desire
Lick my legs, Im on fire
Lick my legs of desire

Yeah, youre not rid of me
Yeah, youre not rid of me
Ill make you lick my injuries
Im gonna twist your head off, see

Till you say dont you wish you never never met her
Dont you dont you wish you never never met her
Dont you dont you wish you never never met her
Dont you dont you wish you never never met her

Because a friend emailed me the link to the video and told me I should watch it because it's "insane".

I love Bjork's music videos.

That's Spike Jonze directed who has worked with Beastie Boys etc. I have Bjorks 'All Is Full Of Love' on a DVD full of the director's work Chris Cunningham who did the infamous Aphex Twin Windowlicker vid. Bjorks vids are works Of art in themselves.

Aphex Twin - Windowlicker...because supposedly the video is infamous and I've never seen it.

This is some fun shit!

pahuuuta 03-17-2009 12:27 PM

unholy confessions- avenged sevenfold

"I'll try," she said as he walked away.
"Try not to lose you."
Two vibrant hearts could change.
Nothing tears the being more than deception,
unmasked fear.
"I'll be here waiting" tested but secure.

Nothing hurts my world,
just affects the ones around me
When sin's deep in my blood,
you'll be the one to fall.

"I wish I could be the one,
the one who won't care at all
But being the one on the stand,
I know the way to go, no one's guiding me.
When time soaked with blood turns its back,
I know it's hard to fall.
Confined in me was your heart
I know it's hurting you, but it's killing me."

Nothing will last in this life,
our time is spent constructing,
now you're perfecting a world... meant to sin.
Constrict your hands around me,
squeeze till I cannot breathe,
this air tastes dead inside me,
contribute to our plague.
Break all your promises,
tear down this steadfast wall,
restraints are useless here,
tasting salvation's near.

The Pogues - Billy's Bones

So, I'm on a Pogues rampage again. This here's my most played song according to LastFM. So energetic - it's basically celtic folk on speed. Bloody marvellous stuff (and pulled off a fantastic album too).

Anteater 03-17-2009 11:15 PM

Ritual - Waiting By The Bridge

Very tasteful group who keep their proggy tendencies grounded in very sunny folk; wonderful stuff! Plus they got some wicked guitar+bass combination on this particular track. :)

New Order - Get Ready

The song that got me into New Order, off of their big comeback Get Ready. Very different from and much more rock-oriented than the older stuff, but a fantastic song (and album) all the same. Gotta love the video too.

No just no. . . Only Hendrix can top Hendrix, or maybe Hazel or Fuze.

Mojo 03-25-2009 04:11 PM

Sorry, I think SRV's versions of Voodoo Child and especially Little Wing are better than the originals.

Polished, hairless, premature nutsack covers of songs that are supposed to be distorted and jagged.

Mojo 03-25-2009 04:18 PM

They're supposed to be distorted?

No no not the production quality, the style. Hendrix's natural style was a distorted yelping guitar which skipped along a sawblade scream and a bluesy guffaw. SRV tries to copy this with the cover, and like the many other white guitarists who do this they end up doing it wrong.

Fuze could probably overcome the original because he plays everything in this schizophrenic yappering jazz riff which would twist Voodoo Child to sound completely different from the original song.

Mojo 03-25-2009 04:37 PM

I didnt mean the production quality, I meant the style. The thing with a cover is you should be able to do with it whatever you want, should you not? What would be the point in recycling it? Whether or not he tried to imitate Hendrix's style is arguable, maybe he did but just because he didnt make it sound "distorted" or "jagged" is really irrelevant and shouldnt be the basis of anyones opinion. When I listen to both of those tracks, especially Little Wing it makes me realise that there is potential in both to be so much more.

And for the record, I like the originals. I also think Hendrix was the better guitarist.

Molecules 03-25-2009 05:04 PM

the long-awaited (four years since that classic creative spree) MF Doom album has got me going back listening to all his records and comparing them... he's undoubtedly one of a kind on the mic and he's an amazing producer too.

My personal fave of his canon is split between the Viktor Vaughn album Vaudeville Villain and his cheaply-produced 2000 debut. The new one's good by common standards but for him it's just a bit short, inconsistent and Ghostface ruins his track with cliches; although I do like the levels on it with the vocals to the fore... Doom can still put me in a head-bopping trance with his flow and lyrics, just brilliant really.

LISTENNNN (star trek references ftw)

MANIC STREET PREACHERS - SLASH 'N BURN
Back before the Manics got comfortable settling into their old age with mediocre ballad writing and wrote intense, explosive, riff based punk music. Back when the Manics had some balls. Plus I always enjoy watching footage of the band from this era, seeing Richey Edwards on rhythm guitar even though he couldnt play a note and just knowing he wasnt even plugged in.

f*cking badman!! I love early Manics to pieces. Especially this album and the Holy Bible. Gold Against the Soul hasn't aged so well for me... it may be really overblown and more than a little silly but it still delivers.

LoathsomePete 03-26-2009 12:50 PM

Easily my favourite Aesop Rock song, one of the few where he actually rides the beat instead of stomping all over it.

Generation Terrorists and The Holy Bible are the essential Manics albums for sure. Gold Against The Soul comes in third but I can understand that it doesnt quite match up to them in comparison. It's a little polished which the other two were definitely not and its not as strong. It's still a great record though I think, I enjoy listening to it every now and then. JDB's guitar work on that record is probably the best it has ever been.

I'm glad you liked it. The Manics have changed time and time again over the years but if you like that I would recommend the three records mentioned above - Generation Terrorists, Gold Against The Soul and The Holy Bible.

Well times changed with The Manics. They love The Smiths and Joy Division and a lot of other bands that werent really relevant to their early career a lot and a lot of their influences in the present day or from about 1995 onwards are probably much different or at least the ones you will actually hear in their music are. Back in the day it was The Clash, Guns 'n Roses, The Sex Pistols.

LoathsomePete 03-26-2009 01:35 PM

Not as good as the studio version, there's this great line during the banjo solo that says "what the hell is that? banjo ain't got no place in hell, send that **** back up!"
