I googled “are pancho and lefty...” and the first auto fill was “the same person”

There’s a couple interesting discussions about it. I think maybe it’s correct but Townes didn’t realize it when he wrote it. I actually think that’s a really common phenomenon.

Well it's not in the text of the song, but it's also not in the text of the song that they're two people. It's not even in the text of the song that ever even met or had any explicit dealings with one another. But thematically theyre definitely linked with one being a symbol for brash youthfulness with the other being a symbol becoming broken down by age and experience, and if you consider them the same person then those themes make the most sense to me.
