I'm NOT discrediting blues influences. You're the one not giving credit where it's due.

I understand the blues influence, but I think The Beatles as of now have a broader direct influence on modern rock than Chuck Berry.

You can't credit Chuck Berry as a direct influence on progressive and alternative rock, you can't. But many many many prog and alternative bands owe a lot to The Beatles, even the younger bands we have today. That includes a lot of prog. You can certainly hear The Beatles in Yes, Floyd, Genesis, ELP and Gentle Giant. Even in todays bands like Porcupine Tree.

King Crimson were influenced by The Beatles, they covered Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds in their early days and they even wrote a freaking song about them, Happy Family.

I didn't say anything about Chuck Berry or early rock n roll being insignificant, that was a little straw man you made.

If The Beatles didn't do anything different from what came before them they certainly wouldn't have had the impact that they had, especially on music forms like prog that were all about doing something completely different.

You can talk about the blues influence on Hendrix and Zep, but the point remains they had Beatles influences too. If all they took in were blues influences they wouldn't have been the groundbreaking artists they were. They were mixing blues with the mainstream rock that was around at the time. That is what made them different.

You see, that's what great artists do, they mix influences, thats what The Beatles did. But no, when people hate a band, they don't acknowledge it as influences, it's called "ripping people off".

It's a lousy excuse to discredit artists when you don't have any real good argument to make, that's why according to hipsters all over, RHCP are a complete ripoff of lets say, 50 different bands who have little in common with each other? So The Beatles must be a complete ripoff of god knows how many bands. Lets just say they were a ripoff of everyone.

I don't care about RHCP to make any form of judgment about them. I like a lot of music the beatles influenced, like Eletric Light Orchestra, but prog rock was more of a mix of blues, jazz and classical, with a nice bit of psychedelia thrown in. It would have happened without the Beatles. It might not have been as popular if the other big band hadn't gone psychedelic, but it would have been there. Also "hearing the beatles" could be said just the same of any of the other bands similar to the of the era.

King Crimson respected the beatles, and Happy Family is one of my favourites from Lizard, but just because they like them doesn't mean I have to. I used to like the Beatles for quite awhile, but I can't listen to them now becuase I'd just much rather be listening to something interesting.

WRONG!

The Beatles were a vital influence on the genre and the other bands who influenced it as well. When The Moody Blues created Days of Future Past, whose example do you think they were following?

Discrediting The Beatles by pointing out the other influences is again, a straw man. I didn't say anything about them being more important than the other influences on prog, I'm saying they played a major part in influencing the genre and making it what it is. If there was no classical, prog wouldn't be what it is, if there was no jazz, prog wouldn't be what it is.

But the idea behind prog was that it mixed classical, jazz and folk influences with ROCK influences, but what kinda rock do you think that was? Not Chuck Berry or Little Richard.

If there was no Sgt. Pepper. Prog wouldn't be what it is, at all. That's a fact. None of the classic bands would have the sound they had, they all got a good chunk of it from The Beatles.

Prog may have been around without The Beatles but it would have SUCKED and wouldn't be the prog that we know. The Beatles esque melodies and harmonies is what seperated prog bands like Yes and Genesis from avant garde rock bands.

Yeah, like Joanna Newsom whining incoherently like a constipated siamese cat and that's great and all but that doesn't mean you have to be disrespectful to the roots of what you listen to and spread inflamatory lies about a band you just don't happen to like.

Look, cut the crap.

You are the one who implies that even though I and other people like a lot of the same stuff you do, we're still uneducated worms for liking The Beatles and Radiohead and not having the wide palate that you've been ever so blessed with.

I can see it in your smirk, that stupid Radiohead t shirt, that avatar of you playing that guitar, because we need to be reminded that we're dealing with a serious musician here.

That's exactly how you feel. I made a little prog list and instead of just expressing your opinions you insulted me over it. Because I don't know as much about prog as you do.

I don't like you, I can't stress that one enough.

The Beatles most definitely my all time most hated band. My modern day music hatred is turned to Nickleback. Yuck...

that guitar is either an Epiphone? or a Gibson???

Don't sweat the small the small stuff, whenever someone says something I don't like in a forum, I just think there is about 6.5 billion people in the world, and 99.99 % don't even know, don't care what's being said. How important is what's talking about: Rock n Roll, Electric Blues, Prog Rock, The Beatles to the rest of the world?
I do think it is important to have a proper perspective of Rock n Roll and it's history. It does matter to me, but not enough to get aggravated over, yeah I get mad at some things, but sometimes we got to let things go.
