Expand your horizon

Is there a genre of music that you really want to explore but don't know where to start? This is the thread for requests and recommendations whereby you post a genre and someone with knowledge in that area big up's an album and sorts out a link too. Why? It's boring narrow minded :D So get cracking. I am personally looking for some gentle Opera as it's one of the few genres unexplored by myself. We can include sub genres here no problems. Also post your thoughts when you have listened to the recommended album. Anyone with less than 50 posts will be excluded from this as our regular recommendation thread should suffice.

I have been trying to get some good blues rock, with a bass driven sound. SRV type stuff kind of. Im having trouble finding artists that really appeal to me.

Also some bass driven smooth jazz would be great. Again, im having trouble finding artists i like.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer. Reco's and Links/Video's are appreciated.

What exactly does gentle opera mean?

I have some stuff I can up, but not sure it's what you're looking for.

The more mellow, ethereal sound. Nothing too bombastic.

Just you tubed a few snippets and they seem a little OTT for what I was looking for but there is something that appeals for sure. I would imagine an Opera is a lights out eyes closed type of experience. Thanks for the suggestion.

Man, you know, I'm having a real hard time getting into mainstream post-grunge. Anyone think they can help me?

Which artists have you looked into so far?

Here's one you may know...I love it personally, may be a little much for you but worth a try. (It's just one song...we can post links to single songs right?)
14 Ellens Gesang III ('Ave Maria'), song for voice & piano, D. 839 (Op. 52-6).mp3

Schizotypic 03-31-2009 01:00 PM

Things I want to get into:
-Punk Rock which rebells against something directly (Like Bikini Kill with femanism)
Stuff like The Misfits is just fun music, but doesn't seem to have much of a point.
-Anything that sounds like Heroin from The Velvet Underground or Washer from Slint, or like Snake off the 4-track demos album by PJ Harvey.
-Anything bluesy or with jazz or swing that has a rock or metel side to it.

jackhammer 03-31-2009 01:01 PM

Single tracks are fine and yes I know Ave Maria but still nice to own :)

Top 5 essential Drum n' Bass albums please :D I'm already on High Contrast, great stuff.

jackhammer 03-31-2009 02:25 PM

Roni Size - New Forms
London Elektricity - Billion Dollar Gravy
LTJ Bukem - Logical Progressions
EZ Rollers - Weekend World

That's 4 from me but these are older albums I have to stress but all have slightly different elements of DnB which is never a bad thing.

Piss Me Off 03-31-2009 02:27 PM

I only know the name Roni Size but i had no problem with what i heard, shall be on that soonish :thumb:

jackhammer 03-31-2009 02:29 PM

LTJ Bukem is the schizz:

Piss Me Off 03-31-2009 02:39 PM

That's the sort of stuff i'm looking for, good beat to it but ambient enough to chill too. Nice work!

dac 03-31-2009 02:52 PM

I've been working my way into trip hop, and picking up some staples like Portishead and Massive Attack. What are some of the off the trail records worth going for?

Lets see here...
I have ZERO death metal albums, and I think thats because I've been looking in the wrong places.
The only jazz album I own is Cosmos by Sun Ra, and it's not even on a format that I can listen to (its vinyl, and I lack a turntable).
The Only Post-rock Album I own is Lift your skinny fists... by GY!BL, and I love it, so I want to look more into that.
The only Post-Hardcore album I own is Relationship of Command by ATD-I, which is now one of my favorite albums.
Some accessible routes for these genres would be greatly appreciated. :)

Aside from what Jackhammer mentioned, give Black Secret Technology by A Guy Called Gerald a spin - one of the essentials (if you don't have it already of course).

Timeless by Goldie's another good 'un too.

I don't know much opera at all, but what do you think of this....

Caruso - Luciano Pavarotti

On the version I have, Jeff Beck plays on it and it's incredible.

This isn't quite as mellow, but I like this track a lot too...

Gladiatore - Luciano Pavarotti

Antonio 03-31-2009 06:38 PM

i'd like to check out some electronic music

Double X 03-31-2009 07:21 PM

I listened to 'Escape the Fate' and they were awful. What is some good hardcore that is just plain brutal?

Escape The Fate and "hardcore" do not belong in the same sentance. :P

Double X 03-31-2009 09:28 PM

Well they are considered post hardcore from what I read on wikipedia.

Any suggestions alf?

Just some mainstream stuff. I recently stumbled upon a good jazz/blues station here and they play alot of good stuff but don't offer a tracklist so i rarely know what they are playing. Any reco's would be nice.

Hmm I think this is more along the lines you are looking for.

YouTube - As Cities Burn - "Bloodsucker, Pt. II"

or...

YouTube - Finch, What it is to Burn

or if you want more heavy...

YouTube - Norma Jean - Memphis Will Be Laid To Waste

or.

YouTube - Angel Below -Underoath (w/ lyrics)

enjoy. hope this helps you

AK1200 - Fully Automatic is pretty essential I think

Aphrodite - Aphrodite is amazing if you like more 'jump-up / funky style'

Dieselboy - Dungeon Masters Guide is his best imo. Really dark and heavy type stuff.

Calyx - Shelflife is great

also Marcus Intalex's mix on Fabriclive .35 has been one of my favorites for a really long time. Very chill, and just packed with good songs all the way through.

:)

A very easy mistake to make. Death metal isn't the easiest genre of music to get into if you're not sure you're really into at first. The wrong bands can be a real turn off and sadly you'll miss some of the better more talented ones out there. Anyhow I'll post a few videos and if any of them strike a chord with you send me a PM and I'll send you the album.

I hope that puts you on the right path.

I need someone with a lot of knowledge about Mexican music to introduce me to some stuff. I'm not a fan of the accordion-based Mexican music that sort of sounds like polka, but I am interested in two kinds of Mexican music: Stuff with more complex percussion along the lines of a lot of South American music (I think this stuff is called cumbia) and also the kind of Mexican folk music with the fiddle and the vocals that almost sound like yodeling. I'm not even sure of the names of these genres so it's been hard for me to find anything on my own. If anyone can help I'd be really grateful. :)

Children of Bodom would be another death metal band that is pretty incredible if you havn't heard em.
Their Hatebreeder cd is especially badass.
