Music Banter Hall of Fame: Induction Thread 3

Third one now and there were a lot of positive nominations so it's a biggy! Read below if you don't know what to do.

The nominees are:

Frank Zappa
He's God, apparantly.

The Clash
Should they stay or should they go? (Ha)

Bob Dylan
Will you leave him on Desolation Row? (Ugh)

Pink Floyd
I'VEGOTABIKEYOUCANRIDEITIFYOULIKE

Big Black
Looking distinctly out of place here.

Tom Waits
It's Tom Waits.

The Smiths
No strong opinions here.

Chuck Berry
Open your mouth baby, here it comes.

How this works:

If you have over 100 posts under your name then you can vote, feel free to voice your opinions if you have less posts though.
There won't be a poll, votes will be made publically by posting in this thread. You can vote for yes or no as many times as you want, as long as there's an explanation for your vote. If you haven't heard enough so feel you can't decide you can abstain.
So a post here would look like....

Frank Zappa: Yes, because....
The Clash: No, because....
Bob Dylan: Yes, because...
etc.

The artists that get 2/3rd Yes votes for them get in, easy as that. Those who don't get in can still be nominated at a later date.

This'll be open for a week and a half, since people seem to be confused remember you are voting what YOU think should be in the Hall Of Fame, not what you think others would want or whatever.

Get voting broheims.

Piss Me Off 04-13-2009 06:16 AM

Frank Zappa: Yeah, i'd shy away from him calling a genius but he certainly made music more fun.
The Clash: Definitley, one of my favourites.
Bob Dylan: Abstain, i haven't got enough stuff i don't give him enough time sadly.
Pink Floyd: Yep, the more i listen the more i love.
Big Black: Yep, one of noise rocks best.
Tom Waits: In no way could i say no.
The Smiths: My favourite band, ja.
Chuck Berry: Nope. Don't get testy with me, he's influential but i never listen to him.

khfreek 04-13-2009 06:21 AM

Frank Zappa: Yes, because Inca Roads is one of my fav songs and apparently his discography is pretty consistent. Not to mention I just listened to his first album, which was hilarious.
The Clash: Yes, because they're decent and very influential.
Bob Dylan: No, I don't like his style.
Pink Floyd: Yes, they've got several classic albums.
Big Black: Abstaining.
Tom Waits: Abstaining.
The Smiths: Yeah, great stuff.
Chuck Berry: Nope, I don't like his style, for all his influence.

Zarko 04-13-2009 06:28 AM

Frank Zappa: Yes, Well I did nominate him...
The Clash: Nah, not a fan.
Bob Dylan: Yes, You don't need to listen to too much of his discography to find stuff you like... Influential enough for it to be a factor for me
Pink Floyd: Yes, I used to be iffy on them, loving only an album or two but have since turned a corner
Big Black: No - I mean I like em and have all of their albums, I just don't like em enough
Tom Waits: God yes... Just the voice should be enough to get him in
The Smiths: Nah, never been a fan
Chuck Berry: Nada, listened to enough to realise it ain't my thing.

Bulldog 04-13-2009 06:34 AM

Frank Zappa: Yes. He's a staple when it comes to the avante-garde side of music and has a string of classic albums to his name.

The Clash:
Yes. One of the most important and deservedly popular bands from the first wave of British punk.

Bob Dylan:
Yes. Another one of music's most influential figures and has the classic albums to back him up.

Pink Floyd:
Yes. Dogs - 'nuff said.

Big Black:
I like what I've heard, but that's not really a lot of their stuff, so I'm afraid I'll have to abstain.

Tom Waits:
Yes. One of the most unique, prolific, charismatic and consistent people in music.

The Smiths:
Yes. I wouldn't call them one of my favourites, but there's no doubt they belong in the Hall Of Fame.

Chuck Berry:
I'll abstain from this one as well. As influential as he was, I simply don't listen to his music often enough.

spark10036 04-13-2009 06:46 AM

Frank Zappa: Yes, used to be a huge fan some years ago, I wouldn't say I'm one now, but he was so influential...
The Clash: Yes, greatest punk band...
Bob Dylan: Yes, best lyricist ever
Pink Floyd: Yes, cause they are my favorite band after all...
Big Black: No, never liked them
Tom Waits: No, not such a big fan yet to vote yes...
The Smiths: Yes, best british band of the 80s, and that should count for something...
Chuck Berry: No, we don't have to vote yes for everyone who's in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, yeah I like 1-2 songs, but that's just about it...

Double X 04-13-2009 06:55 AM

Frank Zappa: Nah, never been a fan.
The Clash: Yes, my first punk band!
Bob Dylan: Of course
Pink Floyd: Yes, random guys + Syd = god
Big Black: N/A
Tom Waits: Never, been a fan really, so no.
The Smiths: No, I've tried to get into Meat Is Murder and it's just boring. I should like them, they sound like my type of band but I don't
Chuck Berry: Nah, too boring.

FaSho 04-13-2009 07:31 AM

Frank Zappa: N/A
The Clash: Yes, great punk band.
Bob Dylan: Hell yes, he's a folk artist, plus he's amazing.
Pink Floyd: Yes, because they made Animals
Big Black: Yes, Songs About F*cking is one of my favorites recently
Tom Waits: Yes, He's TOM WAITS
The Smiths: My favourite band, so of course
Chuck Berry: No, I just don't like him

TheBig3 04-13-2009 07:40 AM

Frank Zappa: Yes, one of the only people who can play for nearly 10 mins and I still enjoy it (him and James Brown really)

The Clash: I'm honestly not that big of a fan. Sorry, but no.

Bob Dylan: Yes. Highway 61 was ballsy and thats merit enough for me.

Pink Floyd: No thanks. Sorry jackhammer, but their not me.

Big Black: I'd vote yes if I'd heard more, but for now I'm abstaining.

Tom Waits: Yes.

The Smiths: I voted no previously, but I think honestly they are deserving. I'm a huge proponent of people living outside of their times. Yes/

Chuck Berry: No thanks.

FireInCairo 04-13-2009 07:54 AM

Frank Zappa
Sure why not!

The Clash
The only band that matters

Bob Dylan
I have come to love his lyrics

Pink Floyd
Yes yes

Big Black
I seem to be saying yes too much

Tom Waits
it's Tom ****ing Waits!

The Smiths
My inner Morrissey fanboy is coming out.

Chuck Berry
finally, **** off berry.

dac 04-13-2009 08:16 AM

Frank Zappa
Abstain - I like him, and he's fun, but I'm just not sure. I still need to give him some more listens, I only have two albums.

The Clash
Abstain - Zero listens

Bob Dylan
Yes - It's Bob Fecking Dylan

Pink Floyd
Yes - Yes, one of the greatest acts ever.

Big Black
Abstain - Not enough listens

Tom Waits
Yes - It's Tom ****ing Waits!

The Smiths
Yes - Smiths fanboy reporting in!

Chuck Berry
No - I just don't think he has made enough good music. Influential yes, but there are a lot more things that are more influential that aren't even up for nomination.

Janszoon 04-13-2009 09:41 AM

I guess based on other people's posts we've decided that we're only voting based on personal preference? No regard for influence or impact on music in general? Doesn't make for very interesting discussion if you ask me, but with that in mind, here are my votes:

Frank Zappa
No, because I don't like him.

The Clash
Yes, because I like them.

Bob Dylan
No, because I don't like him.

Pink Floyd
Yes, because I like them.

Big Black
Yes, because I like them.

Tom Waits
Yes, because I like him.

The Smiths
No, because I like them somewhat, but not that much.

Chuck Berry
Yes, because I like him.

Zarko 04-13-2009 09:50 AM

Well the nomination threads don't offer that much discussion... most of the time its just votes with no justification either way (Not saying I ain't guilty :p:)

And then the other times its mainly just yes because x reason with no real discussion or feedback

If boo boo didn't get upset over Berry/Yes not getting in, then there wouldn't be any real discussion anyway. And most of the discussion comes out of who does and who doesn't get in at these stages.

The OP for the last one of these said the whole point was to start discussion but you're right, given the way most people want to treat it as less of hall of fame situation (i.e. voting for people based on achievement) and more of just a popularity contest, it doesn't generate as much discussion as it could.

crash_override 04-13-2009 10:00 AM

Frank Zappa
Yes, so many albums and such a huge influence.

The Clash
No, I've always thought they were widely overrated. Plus, it's my vote and I'll do what I wish with it.

Bob Dylan
Yes, one of the best song writers of time.

Pink Floyd
Yes, a staple in progressive/rock history for decades.

Big Black
Abstain, no ground to stand on with this artist.

Tom Waits
Yes, his style is incredibly unique.

The Smiths
No, always kind of annoyed me.

Chuck Berry
Yes, the first rock n' roll soloist, I love pretty much all of his music. It's a shame MB doesn't give him more love.

Alfred 04-13-2009 10:05 AM

Frank Zappa: Yes, he clearly did what he wanted, with some awesome results.
The Clash: Yes, I would not be who I am without The Clash.
Bob Dylan: Yes, I would not be who I am without my dad playing Bob Dylan over and over again.
Pink Floyd: Yes, they had two amazing albums, and a bunch of great ones.
Big Black: N/A
Tom Waits: Yes, I enjoy.
The Smiths: No because I don't like their music.
Chuck Berry: N/A

The Smiths: Yes, but only because they're a Musicbanter favorite.
Chuck Berry: No, because as influential as he apparently is, he's not one of Musicbanter's (as a whole) favorite artists.

I thought the criteria was to vote for who YOU wanted, not who you thought were MB's favorites.

Alfred 04-13-2009 10:13 AM

I just felt like backing up my opinions. :P Being an MB favorite has always been in my criteria for who deserves to make the HOF.

Whatever then, if you insist, I will remove The Smiths.

Heh. You should do whatever makes you happy. I was just referencing this part of the OP:

Alfred 04-13-2009 10:22 AM

Eh, an extra "no" vote won't kill the Smiths.

jackhammer 04-13-2009 01:24 PM

Frank Zappa
Yes if only because he once asked why he played so many genres of music, he replied "because I can". He was scatological but backed it up with musical chops. He was intelligent and could have gone the serious music route but he understood the transient nature of fame so he decided to have a bit of fun.

The Clash
Yes and although they turned their back fairly quickly on the raw Punk sound, kudos has to be given for their determination to try different sounds and genres into their music.

Bob Dylan
No although a couple of his albums are really good (Highway 61 revisited), I don't listen to him enough and I hate his voice.

Pink Floyd
Yes. Do I really need to answer this?

Big Black
Yes. Sod it. I love their sound and listen to them a lot. Even if people dislike Steve Albini's production style, he went for something a little different away from the DIY garage ethic.

Tom Waits
Yes, because the more i hear of him the more I get into him and appreciate the smosgaboard of sounds he conjures up.

The Smiths
No. I like The Smiths but I just prefer other 80's guitar bands.

Chuck Berry
no. Just don't listen to him.

Comus 04-13-2009 01:35 PM

Frank Zappa: Yes He's God

The Clash: Yes, made some great and varied albums, and then released a single (this is england) and died.

Bob Dylan: Yes, as sure as the sun is chicken

Pink Floyd: YEEEEES MAY GOD (frank zappa) SMITE THOSE DOWN WHO VOTE NO

Big Black: Read below

Tom Waits: Read below

The Smiths: No, I'm sorry, this is utter ****e.

Chuck Berry: Yes, very much enjoy listening to this guy, and then you have the influence.

Anteater 04-13-2009 01:54 PM

Frank Zappa: Damn straight.

The Clash: N/A

Bob Dylan: Good songwriter, terrible musician. He gets my yes.

Pink Floyd: Yes. You'd be pretty damn insipid to vote otherwise.

Big Black: Sure.

Tom Waits: Yes.

The Smiths: Fuck 'em, they're overrated and put on a pedestal by every "edgy" and "independent" listener on this forum. Definitely no.

Chuck Berry: A great musician, a great man. Thumbs up here!

lucifer_sam 04-13-2009 01:57 PM

Frank Zappa: Why not, he had the right ideas about music and life in general. I find myself listening to his music less and less but I still think he deserves a spot in there.

The Clash: No, sadly, I don't really like this band. Never hit it off well with London Calling or any of their other material. I can appreciate them for the looming influence they have over other artists I enjoy but I really can't see myself listening to them.

Bob Dylan: Abstain.

Pink Floyd: Of course. One of the first bands I saw myself getting engrossed in and I love their music to death. Everything they made from '71-'77 is positively sublime.

Big Black: No. Steve Albini has made better contributions to the world. And he knows it, too.

Tom Waits: Easily one of the strangest songwriters to grace this fair planet, and yes, one of the best. Absolutely yes.

The Smiths: Nope. Heard enough hype about this band already. I find them not in the least bit interesting.

Chuck Berry: Abstain.

simplephysics 04-13-2009 02:54 PM

Frank Zappa: Chyea, good musiks.

The Clash: Yes. I find some of their material rather bland but London Calling is a gem.

Bob Dylan: Yes, he's god.

Pink Floyd: N/A. I don't really listen to enough PF to care either way.

Big Black: Chyes. Songs About ****ing is a great album.

Tom Waits: Big yes. A man for the ages.

The Smiths: Personally, nah. I own a few Smiths/Mozzy albums and judging from my taste in music they should be way up on my list, but I can't really dig it.

Chuck Berry: N/A. Don't listen to him.

sweet_nothing 04-13-2009 03:13 PM

Frank Zappa: No, I dont care for him

The Clash: Yes, one of the best punk bands this side of Neptune

Bob Dylan: Yes, he's pretty much the coolest person to ever live, also he's the best songwriter ever. And I love his voice.

Pink Floyd: Yes, most of their albums are amazing.

Big Black: No, I like what Ive heard by them but other than that, meh.

Tom Waits: No, dont like his voice or music.

The Smiths: Yes, one of the best bands of the 80's, and if you dont like the Smiths than fuck you and your fat wife. ;)

Chuck Berry: No, he's ok but I dont like him enough for a yes vote.

The Cat 04-13-2009 03:26 PM

Frank Zappa: Yes, Genius!

The Clash: i'm afraid that the Clash are a bit 50/50 for me

Bob Dylan: Yes, When i'm in the right mood then Dylan really hits the spot.

Pink Floyd: OH YES,I was late getting into Floyd but couldn't live without them now!.

Big Black: Yes, but not my favorite.

Tom Waits: Yes, Definatly fantastic artist.

The Smiths: Love them remind me of my first love! and college days .

Chuck Berry: No, just does not do it for me.

Hmm, I remember the one of the rules being you had to have 100+ posts to vote. You voice may go unheard my friend.

For now on I'll be going against what I usually do which is voting based on impact. Now I'll just go on personal preference. That's what everyone else does, so I should be consistant with the interest of the forum.

Frank Zappa - Absolutely. Not only one of the most original musicians ever, also one of the coolest people to ever live.

The Clash - Yes, they seem to get little to no respect from punk fans these days. But that doesn't matter. They're still THE best punk band of their era.

Bob Dylan - Overrated as all hell, but I do like him so sure, why not?

Pink Floyd - Who me? The classic rock tard? Like you have to ask.

Big Black - Nay. I know they have paved the way for all the lo fi/noise bands, oh wait, that's just another reason to vote no. It's just not my kind of music. Sonic Youth I'd certainly vote for though.

Tom Waits - Sure

The Smiths - These guys will get inducted anyway. So no yes vote from me, screw em.

Chuck Berry - Sure.

dac 04-14-2009 01:15 PM

The Smiths are getting rocked :(
