You couldnt be more right if you tried. I used to like Oasis when I was younger as well but have always thought the Gallaghers were a couple of knobends- think just because they had a couple of hit albums that they are the best. I suppose the music, tunewise, isnt bad. But as for the lyrics- total bollocks.

Obviously there is a sense of characterisation to it but I totally agree with what your saying.
Anyone who doesnt, I would say they have a false perception of music. (which I think the vast majority on here would agree)

i want to say it doesn't matter to me but it does somewhat.
i loved nirvana until i saw kurt having contempt for his audience. i immediately threw all their discs in the trash.

back when G & R was new, i thought they would be the next ac/dc. then i saw them in philly with aerosmith. all axl did was whine and complain. he was such a ninny i actually rejoiced at seeing him get punched in the face. i never bought another one of their discs after that.

I've never really understood this viewpoint.

Does how the artist perform not matter? Would you pay to see someone who just stares at their feet for the entire gig and who puts no effort into it at all?

Does what they write in songs not matter? Do you really want to sit through an album of 15 songs with nothing but spoilt self indulgent whining?

that's assuming that their personality impinges upon their ability to throw a live show or their songwriting. for most artists it works advantageously to have a humongous douche in the band, someone's gotta be there to challenge hecklers.

As for the artists 'performance' it doesnt really matter if they do Busted starjumps or not as to me it is the music/sound emulating from the instruments which matters to me.
Obviously there is a sense of characterisation to the lyrics but the point I was making was that people who judge music by the people who make it without actually hearing/listening to the music first is a false perception of music.

I think that knowing the artist helps put music within a better context, it may be a little looser along the lines of judging but I think it is important to consider.

That's because most of the audience didn't seem to "get it". Now everybody knows that Nirvana hated Smells like teen Spirit, but back then I can't imagine how many people told Kurt "Oh I just love all your music! I just love that Smells like Teen Spirit!".

Besides that he didn't show really contempt.. alot of Nirvana concert videos show Kurt joking with the audience and just having fun.

And besides THAT, I think it's a pretty weak thing to "throw out all their discs" because of something like that. Cheers though for throwing in your opinion.

This is where my 2 cents comes in...

I couldn't care less what a musician is like at home, but when it starts to effect the music/lyrics/performences, THAT is when I care.

Of course for me there are limits, I refuse to listen to anyone who has taken a life for beat a woman senseless (so no Charles Manson or Chris Brown)

Yeah thats where the characterisation part comes in, obviously you can only judge music by the actual music itself & not what youve heard about the person who made it.

Yeah this is totally spot on mate, all I was getting at was people who hear this or that about a certain artist and then write them off without even hearing their music yet.
Ive heard Chris Brown's music and its ****ing Sh1T! (my sister keeps playing it all the time) but I didnt know he was a wife beater.
As for Charles Manson, as much as an animal he is, I have heard he did some recordings when he was in prison & before as well I think. I was actually thinking about checking some of it out recentely but got caught up on other music. But I wouldnt write it off until Ive heard it,
I know I'm probably a 'psycho' for saying this but there is a possibility I could like some of his music.

Also as for 'wife beating' have you seen Lucifer Sam's avatar?

I generally don't care as long as the music is good.

Don't get me wrong, my limits are purely a moral thing. I've heard some of Manson's recordings and they are actually quite good, with a very raw folksy quality about them.

And yeah, Lucifer's avvy is crazaay!
