Best Scottish Band/Artist? (Poll)

Alrite, I had the idea recentley that i should have done a poll with my 'Scottish Bands/Artists Appreciation' thread but am unable to change it so had to post a seperate thread (sorry mods!).

My favourite 'band' would be 'Big Country' but on the whole I would have to hand it to the late John Martyn.

Anyway, Ive included as many Scottish bands as I could think of, I know there are loads more I havent heard yet but if anybody has any suggestions that I missed out, feel free to let us know.

I loved "Darklands" so Jesus & Mary Chain it is for me...

Cool, I have been meaning to get that album for ages now. I only have the '21 Singles' album by J&MC. Good band though.

zeppy111 06-04-2009 07:36 AM

Big country for me too. Love the vocals.

sweet_nothing 06-04-2009 08:08 AM

Franz Ferdinand for me, best post punk band to come out of the UK this decade by far.

Its not so much the vocals for me its the bagpipe like guitar sound they had. Especially the riff on 'Fields Of Fire', I hear that in my sleep.

EDIT: Who else voted John Martyn???

agreed, they will always surprise me in terms of being their own music.

simplephysics 06-04-2009 09:59 AM

I'll go ahead and I take the indie*** route with this one, Belle & Sebastian.

dac 06-04-2009 10:48 AM

Mogwai did so much for me musically. I owe a lot to them.

crash_override 06-04-2009 11:13 AM

I went with Jesus and Mary chain.

Ive actually not heard Belle & Sebastian myself yet, but included them as I know a lot of other people like them. Also why do people keep going on about 'indie sh*t'. Its not sh*t, just because its blander than other types of music that all the progheads etc listen to. I grew up listening to Indie, The Stone Roses & Oasis were pretty much the two first bands I got into. I dont listen to a lot of Indie nowadays but still have a liking for it. I pride myself on being open to a wide range of different genres & subgenres.
Anyway what about Idlewild?

kyleargyle 06-04-2009 02:12 PM

Definitely Jesus and Mary Chain.

Bulldog 06-04-2009 02:23 PM

Out of that lot, Primal Scream get my vote.

Aztec Camera, Josef K, Orange Juice and the Fire Engines are well worth checking out if you haven't already. Classic Scottish post-punk there (except Aztec Camera - they're a bit more power pop than post-punk... kinda).

Zer0 06-04-2009 02:29 PM

Has to be The Jesus & Mary Chain, i love Psychocandy and Darklands.

Yeah, I like Primal Scream but see them as another one of these inconsistent bands, much like the way I view the Foo Fighters (although PS are way better). Thanks for the bands man Ill check them out when time permits.

jacklovezhimself 06-04-2009 02:33 PM

I'm not surprised at all.
I predicted it was either going to come down to Primal Scream, or Jesus And Mary Chain.

Son of JayJamJah 06-04-2009 06:11 PM

John Martyn was my pick

Honorable Mention: Primal Scream, The Proclaimers, J&M Chain and Stealers Wheel (Which I'd never have considered a band of Scots.

That wasn't suppose to be a sleight against indie, at all. Most of the music I listen to is considered indie.

FaSho 06-04-2009 06:58 PM

I'm pretty Torn between Primal Scream, Belle and Sebastian, and Mogwai.

Rickenbacker 06-04-2009 06:58 PM

Mogwai by a longshot.

Yeah sorry but I interpret sh*t as being negative. Fair enough, Im rooted if you like, in Indie music (mostly British).

Does nobody think that Nazareth deserve a mention?
This flight tonight is an awsome track.

Yeah i think they deserve a mention. I have a real soft spot for Love Hurts

Burning Down 06-05-2009 05:01 PM

I love Franz Ferdinand.

The Proclaimers get an honourable mention from me as well. "I'm Gonna Be 500 Miles" is one of my favourite songs!

I quite like them, but not a chance.

My vote here is for Mogwai.

You should check out the likes of Big Country & Spear Of Destiny. John Martyn is also a very worthy inclusion & my highest ranking amongst scottish artists.

jackhammer 06-05-2009 07:12 PM

Shop Assistants.

John Martyn is excluded because he was English born.

Gone Sugaring 06-05-2009 07:15 PM

Bunch of bands I love on that list (Jesus and Mary Chain, Belle and Sebastian, Primal Scream, Orange Juice, Boards Of Canada) but I ended up voting for Teenage Fanclub mostly because as of now I'm obsessed with Bandwagonesque.

I didnt actually notice that. I read up on his wiki & it doesnt say where his parents were from though.

"Martyn was born in New Malden, Surrey, England.[2] Martyn's parents, both opera singers, divorced when he was five and he spent his childhood alternating between England and Scotland. Much of this was spent in the care of his grandmother. His strongest ties were in Glasgow, and he attended Shawlands Academy there."

No problem, It really is one of my few pleasures; introducing people to music I love & I will often go to great lengths- burning them a cd or even (on a few ocassions) buying a duplicate copy so I can give them one to keep. It's not that Im generous or anything, when it comes to music I really love; I just feel compelled to distribute that music amongst other people, whatever the means.

Griffith Genkins 06-07-2009 03:00 PM

Easy choice for me, Belle & Sebast.

Making them my main summer listening this year :)

youngbridge 03-31-2010 10:21 AM

Jesus & Mary Chain for me. But I do love Mogwai.

H.Z 03-31-2010 10:29 AM

JAMC
Mogwai
Belle & Sebastian:)

But hey,where are Cocteau Twins?

swim 03-31-2010 11:22 AM

By far not the best but I've been listening to Frightened Rabbit a lot lately.

TheCunningStunt 03-31-2010 02:27 PM

There's no other option.

Frightened Rabbit are my favourite.

Harry 03-31-2010 04:19 PM

Proclaimers, of course! Classic right outta Leith.

juan_bon 04-01-2010 10:32 AM

NumberNineDream 04-01-2010 10:37 AM

Blueburritto 04-01-2010 02:02 PM
