Not a jab dear boy. I didn't know how to interpret your question, so rather guess, I asked.
Now I know what you mean, I'd say you're spot on.
Northern Soul is personal and intimate to me, not out of choice, but because of it's very nature.
Anyone who takes the time to listen and learn to appreciate this particular kind of soul will inevitably be taken beyond merely listening.
Obviously it's not the only kind of music capable of having that effect, but I've yet to discover another more personal and intimate genre.
You should give it a try.

TheBig3 09-01-2010 01:37 PM

I did. The things that appeal to me deepest are also the polar opposites.

Wait's "Hoist that Rag" or "Don't go into that barn" for example, are ragged-edged, percussive, hammered songs that froth at the mouth and, if they were an illustration, would be drawn frenzied, and harried, and would look as if they were always going too far in one direction of the other.

Theres a great deal of control loss in the music I love. I get the impression soul, and its diciples are masters at their craft. My favorite songs sound like they were written by King Lear in the storm.

I'm willing to try anything you'll send me, but if I don't prefer it, I hope you understand why. As Andrew Jackson was quote "I was a man born for a storm."

Nice...Hoist That Rag is what convinced me to listen to more Tom Waits albums. Love that song. I don't go out of my way to find "storminess" in my music, but as far as Tom Waits goes that is what he does best.

People don't enjoy them but they sell a lot of records? Please, tell me, if people don't enjoy a band, why would this band be popular...?

I was taken as rather coherent before that last post, and I suspect Janszoon was asking me to make a move before he was found presumptive and flat-footed in his argument. I don't think he didn't understand.
Your argument doesn't make any sense to begin with, whether you posted a random list of bands or not.

Don't you have some terrible music to enjoy?

I prefer the term 'connoisseurs'. That or 'elitist twats'. Either will do.

Fear not! I'll refrain from forcing you to listen.
Seeing as you said, "I don't go many places in this forum", I'll point you in the direction of this thread instead.
I've neglected it recently, but the youtube vids should still work along with about 90% of the download links found in the review titles.
You can pick the bones out of those should you feel the urge.

I wish I had friends more like yours. :(

BTown 03-13-2011 11:31 PM

can i get a BUMPPPPPPPPP

Queen Boo 03-13-2011 11:36 PM

BTown: You have really good taste. You like The Cows, who I have a massive, massive boner for, and you also like a lot of 90s stuff that I like too, like Weezer.
You defended Nirvana way more enthusiastically then I ever did because I think they were the band that got you into music. Thats cool, I have like 40 posts doing that with ****ing Green Day. I like Nirvana okay but I think we can both agree that the bands they influenced are 10,000 times better then them.
And you like the Velvet Underground but hate Nico's vocals too. I love your taste bro.

CanwllCorfe 03-13-2011 11:41 PM

duga and Gunnels have fantastic taste. As does kayleigh.

RVCA 03-13-2011 11:49 PM

Violent and Funky just has the worst taste ever, I mean, he likes Blink-182 and The Arctic Monkeys for chrissakes! :p:

CanwllCorfe 03-13-2011 11:51 PM

^ Oh and VCR too.

CanwllCorfe 03-13-2011 11:55 PM

Yeah! If you're wondering why I screw up your name, it's kind of mocking my own. Mine's old welsh and unpronounceable, yours is 4 letters.

RVCA 03-14-2011 12:06 AM

Haha, actually, I quite like VCR! And thanks dude. I really admire your taste as well, as I've discovered quite a few great bands thanks to your posts. (Fredrik and Emphemetry to name the first two that come to mind)

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 03-14-2011 12:09 AM

Dankstra, Janzsoon, and JackPat have incredible taste in music. Glad there are actually people out there even on the Internet that can enjoy some of the things I do.

Howard the Duck 03-14-2011 01:21 AM

i listen to a very broad spectrum of music so everybody's taste is just fine with me

no Modern Talking or Michael Learns to Rock fans so far

those two are just tragic

Who has never liked a blink 182 or Arctic Monkeys song?

s_k 03-14-2011 05:16 AM

I have liked B182 in the day. I don't anymore.
But I still like the Arctic Monkeys. It's just good music. I don't give a **** about the hype.
I like the Last Shadow Puppets better, but that doesn't change the fact that I like the Arctic Monkeys.

Howard the Duck 03-14-2011 05:48 AM

Blink 182 are pretty inoffensive to me

heck I even loved Green Day's Dookie

Alfred 03-14-2011 05:54 AM

What's wrong with Dookie?

s_k 03-14-2011 06:04 AM

Absolutely nothing. Apart from that it's the only greenday album you'll ever need as the rest is the same or worse :D.

Howard the Duck 03-14-2011 06:33 AM

isn't Green Day universally hated on this forum?

I disagree. Dookie is fine and dandy but American Idiot deserves some credit for being better imo.

It shows their growth and some maturity.

Not really, I think most people are neutral on them or like them a bit. I don't really see how someone could hate them, they're decent.

s_k 03-14-2011 07:59 AM

Ah, I thought everything went wrong when they got to American Idiot.
They just stopped making punk right at that point.

djchameleon 03-14-2011 08:00 AM

I feel like American Idiot took them up a notch

starrynight 03-14-2011 08:01 AM

I'm happy with the music I like, I don't need other people to give me reassurance. And if people don't like something I like why should that concern me? lol. I suppose I could try and look 'cool' (as some would see it) by pretending I like some hyped band but that just isn't in my character.

Howard the Duck 03-14-2011 08:31 AM

s_k 03-14-2011 08:36 AM

About music taste; As some of you may know I comb the 'what are you listening to now?' 'what albums have you bought or downloaded?' and 'albums you're digging'-topics every now and then. Two people whose taste I seem to like pretty much are Sidewinder and Burning Down. Thanks for some great tips, guys :D

I agree with this. It's not a bad record at all. I wouldn't call myself a fan and I hardly ever listen to Green Day but on the rare occasion I feel like listening to them I may put American Idiot on. I like Dookie too but Jesus of Surburbia is better than anything on that album.

Burning Down 03-14-2011 10:42 AM

I want bob back too! I've discovered some good stuff because of him!

Yeah what's up with bob.? My visits have been more sporadic lately so I have to say I didn't notice. But now that I know, I miss him.

Zer0 03-14-2011 10:52 AM

I don't listen to Green Day anymore, but when American Idiot was released that was a pretty big moment for me. In that brief moment after it was released and before they completely blew up and were in your face constantly I played that album the whole time and it felt like one of those albums that you could live inside. Although i haven't listened to the album in a few years now, and I probably won't anytime soon, I do think that American Idiot and Dookie are the only Green Day albums you'll really need. Even when I was a Green Day fan I found the rest of their stuff slightly underwhelming compared to those two.
