I think I agree with every word of your post Zero, we surely must be of a similar age?

I'm 24 now and I was 17 when American Idiot was released, but I was a fan of them for a few years before that.

Mojo 03-14-2011 11:09 AM

Hence your username. Of course. Well yeah, I was 19. I liked Dookie and I was a big fan of American Idiot when it was released. I also never quite got away with their rest of their albums, even then. Especially Warning, ouch.

Zer0 03-14-2011 11:17 AM

The username kind of gave it away alright :D Yeah Warning was pretty sub-standard, even though it was my first Green Day album I still think it was their weakest.

duga 03-14-2011 11:19 AM

I actually never liked Green Day at all until American Idiot. I never thought pop punk could pull of something like that, but they nailed it. I felt like I was one of the first few to give it a chance. Right around the millionth time I heard Boulevard of Broken Dreams I decided I was done with them.

So...I guess I'm with you guys.

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 03-14-2011 11:24 AM

Never have, or will, like Greenday.

Everybody should be honest. Personally I don't think most people have guts to be like that, but maybe I'm a pessimist.

I am honest. I can say that when I was 11, Good Charlotte were my favourite band. I have no shame.

He's off doing some kind of six week welding course. It was several weeks ago that it started so he should be done soon I think. Hopefully he doesn't forget about us when he gets back!

In that brief moment after it was released and before they completely blew up and were in your face constantly I played that album the whole time and it felt like one of those albums that you could live inside. Although i haven't listened to the album in a few years now, and I probably won't anytime soon, I do think that American Idiot and Dookie are the only Green Day albums you'll really need. Even when I was a Green Day fan I found the rest of their stuff slightly underwhelming compared to those two.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "before they blew up"? They were already an immensely popular, in-your-face-constantly band long before American Idiot came out.

Well it might have different on your side of the pond. In the 4 years between Warning and American Idiot they were pretty much forgotten about by the mainstream here, they were seen as has-beens. Even the American Idiot single didn't make too much of an impact on the radio, it wasn't until Boulevard of Broken Dreams was released when sh!t went skyward and suddenly you could'nt escape them. That's what I was referring to.

ReadyWhenCalled 03-14-2011 12:57 PM

Seems to be pretty friendly.. I've blogged with a couple MMA (mixed martial arts) forums for about 6-7 years now, and they can be a little more hostile.. I wont why that is?;)

But they still had sold boatloads of albums prior to that, no? I usually think of the term "blew up" as referring to a small time band getting popular, not an already famous band staging a comeback.

Green Day are leagues above Good Charlotte.

As for their albums... American Idiot>Dookie, but Dookie's close.

Obviously. But they both suck.

Queen Boo 03-14-2011 02:08 PM

Green Day came out with a few pretty good albums.
Good Charlotte has produced nothing but absolute shit.

Dipshit fanbases aside, Green Day and Good Charlotte arn't even in the same galaxy.

There is only one galaxy containing awful bands. Green Day and Good Charlotte are both in that galaxy.

Just for fun I tried to look for a hilarious image depicting an awful band galaxy, and a pic of Green Day was the second result.

I'm not being dishonest at all. I despise Greenday. In fact, I hated 90s rock in the 90s. Most of it I ended up liking years later. Greenday? **** no...

Queen Boo 03-14-2011 02:30 PM

James: lol, you're a classic rockfag.

RVCA: pretty varied but you only seem to talk about the stuff you listen to thats in the top 40....so.......stop it.

I pretended to like Greenday when I was younger because I didn't like music that much at the time. When people would ask me what my favorite band was I would just say Greenday... Can't stand their music now. Sorry, I just think combining pop with punk is a crime against nature. Next thing you know there'll be "pop metal."

Why is it such a crime? Punk and "pop" aren't really that dissimilar.

I just don't see it as a good combination. Maybe for others who want something a bit more accessible in the realm of punk rock, but the concept of having both pop and punk being together in one genre doesn't really appeal to me. I generally look at pop as having a more cheerful sound, while I look at punk as being more angry.

Of course, I can't stand pop music. So, I am guilty of being a bit biased.

Sansa Stark 03-14-2011 05:51 PM

I disagree Conan, they're not all that similar at all

But I don't think it's a"crime against nature" to combine pop with punk. I don't particularly like pop-punk (which I consider to be more of the Ramones/Buzz****s/Exploding Hearts kinda deal) but I'm not going to be so pretentious as to call it a crime against nature.

TockTockTock 03-14-2011 05:55 PM

I'm sorry that you find me pretentious.

Dr.Seussicide 03-14-2011 05:56 PM

With respect to the entire Green Day argument, the only song I can stand is Basket Case. That's about it.

As for the members with the best, in my opinion, I've grown pretty fond of:

bob.
dankrsta
Canwllcorfe and
Charlemagne.

I can always get good recs from these guys :thumb:
