This seems a bit odd since there are many people here who have been lamenting
the fact that few people around share their taste :/

I think there's certainly overlap but I doubt you're right about that observation in general. Unknown Soldier, Batlord and Engine know collectively some of the most obscure and un-trendy metal music around, and we love them for it.
And I personally struggle to find an artist I've heard of in bob.'s Last FM library.

I know a lot of people listen to mainstream stuff, but I'd be careful about making such generalisations.
