The Kingsmen , The Trashmen , Paul Revere & the Raiders , The Wailers , The Standells ,? & the Mysterians.

And then of course you had surf music too , you`ll have a hard time convincing me that d1ck Dale`s music wasn`t riff orientated.

Nah rock is heavier. Rock and roll has like keys in it, and strange sounding electric guitars. Listen to Chuck Berry- 'Roll over Beethove' and then The Rolling Stones- Sympathy for the Devil, you'll get it.
Plus rock 'n' roll was usually played by black artist, until some guy called Elvis came allong. Rock music is usually played by white guys (appologizes if this seems racist, eg if some members dont like the term black and preffer coloured, it isnt meant to be)

i think grunge bands were an important part of rock n roll during the 80s and 90s. nirvana, pearl jam, and soundgarden started a muscial revolution in the northwest, and one cant forget the west coast bands that helped alternative rock evolve, such as the red hot chili peppers and jane's addiction. guns n roses were great too!
