and i just realize who hasn't been nominated yet. must get on that...

I lost you somewhere in there, so we should induct Pink Floyd because U2 sucks?

I just don't care for Pink Floyd that much. Granted its because over the years, overexposure to it via frat boys and classic rock radio has pretty much destroyed the emotional value I attatched to it, but either way, shouldn't be in the hall of fame. They had a really short shelf life for me.

dac, there definitely have been great moments of the last 20 years. I'm just saying that, a lot of the music we've heard in the last two decades probably would not have happened without the music before it. :)

In the pop field, for instance, it just feels like it hasn't been as strong as it was, especially in terms of albums. We had Michael Jackson, Madonna and Prince in the 80's. There are no three equivalents to those acts nowadays. Any one that could be compared to them, just aren't nearly as strong.

Justin Timberlake is doing pretty well and has strong moments, but he's no MJ; and there isn't a viable "replacement" for Madonna, in terms of overall talent and knack for music (the biggest female pop star of the last decade just doesn't cut it, for various reasons).

Pink Floyd is definitely in, btw, with the way the votes have gone.

Just live, sweet. That's the best we can do.

They'll get into the Hall Of Fame anyways.

Not what I was going for. What I mean is that the stoner-qualities of Pink Floyd are a bit over blown. Yeah they're trippy at times, but there is a lot of stuff out there that is WAY trippier than Pink Floyd. Just because a bunch of stoners wear their DSOTM sweatshirts everyday doesn't mean PF hasn't had a great output of music. They've had a lot of great guitar work and song writing over the years and they get a bad reputation from a bunch of fans who have never listened to Piper, Animals, Meddle etc...

Yeah I suppose that there are no super star pop acts like the 80s had, but is that really a bad thing? And just because it came first doesn't mean it's better.

Pink Floyd are through.

It’s about time i did a nomination. No offense to the Dylans, Beatles and Pink Floyds being nominated here but its all a bit safe. What I embrace about Musicbanter is bands being celebrated that probably don’t get the recognition they deserve. I could have nominated my favourite band but around their time was another band in America who had even more of an influence over my music taste. I give you...

Big Black

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/50.../Big+Black.jpg

Big Black may just be one of the most incredible, violent, abrasive and downright unpleasant bands i’ve ever had the pleasure to hear. I’m not one of those people who say ‘this band is the most punk band ever’ but if i was i’d probably give that accolade to Big Black. No-one sounded like them before and still no one really does now. Their instruments sounded like industrial tools. They used a drum machine. They released more EP’s than albums and all of them stand up to them in quality as well. They set off fireworks on stage. Go and google the artwork to the Headache EP (on grounds of decency the EP was wrapped in a ‘bodybag’, thats all i’ll say). This band was raw.

Big Black are most celebrated for Songs About Fucking and i’ll agree it’s an absolute classic, the first side in particular is absolute perfection. It deserves props for that cover of The Model alone. I would seriously suggest before voting that you listen to this if you haven’t already, i’ll be happy to share. Atomiser is brilliant as well and very underrated, also being home to their arguable masterpiece Kerosene, one of the best teenage angst songs i’ve heard. Pigpile is definitely worth checking too, one of the most vicious live albums i’ve encountered.

Steve Albini was in this band too y’know. If you like music chances are you own something he had a hand in making, a true musical genius. Big Black played a huge part in moulding the American alternative scene at the time, their imprint being seen in punk, noise rock and indie bands alike. They’ll never be for everyone but the respect they deserve can’t be denied. Vote ‘em in.
