Music Banter Hall Of Fame: Nominations Thread
Music Banter Hall Of Fame
Nominations Thread, PLEASE READ THIS FIRST! An idea put forward by JayJamJah, the Hall of Fame will be an ongoing project that with time should honour the music artists that are loved by the collective members of MB. How it works: Each week an artist put forward by a member will be put up for a nomination in this thread with a poll. At the end of the week if the artist has received over 50% positive votes then they will be added onto a list at the end of this post and later be up for induction. Artists who are nominated have to have a thread dedicated to them on these forums and have had their debut album released at least 10 years ago. How to Nominate: Any member with over 100 posts can nominate an artist which abide by the terms above. To nominate an artist PM me saying what artist you want to nominate and add a case for why they should be added to the Hall of Fame. Then i'll post the case here and it will be decided on, if 2 members nominate the same artist i'll post both cases. In the event of me receiving lots of nominations, please be patient for yours to be put up! (Well argued and thoughtful cases may be given priority ;)) How to Vote: Once you've voted say who you voted for and why. Please try to avoid one word answers. Especially if you're voting negatively, as of course we want to see both sides of the story. This is aiming to create discussion after all! After the first 6 nominations have been declared then the first induction thread will be made to decide who goes through. Now get nominating! :thumb: The first nominee will be put up for voting shortly. Led Zeppelin
http://mog.com/pictures/wikipedia/17...d_Zeppelin.jpg
“In the days of my youth I was told what it means to be a man” That’s the first line of “Good Times Bad Times” the opening track on Led Zeppelin’s eponymous 1969 debut. It was in the days of my youth that I was first exposed to Zeppelin. They entered my world just as I hit adolescence and brought my musical taste to maturation. The music was so raw and heavy at the time and the guitar riffs seemed to be and turns out were unforgettable. Turn on any of the first five Zeppelin LP’s and there are at least two songs even the most novice of listeners can identify right away. The notes stick with you. http://imagecache2.allposters.com/im...107546_999.jpg Led Zeppelin was the biggest band in the world in the 1970’s. They sold out everywhere they went and delivered some of the most intense and electric shows that rock music ever has and ever will see. Their commitment to expanding the influences and range of Rock music was apparent from the start and helped usher in an era of exploration that has helped shape the musical landscape of today. They are members of 24 different recognized musical hall-of-fames world wide, lets add one more to the list. It’s for all these reasons (and so many more) that I nominate Led Zeppelin for the Music Banter Hall of Fame. Commercial Successes Released Seven fantastic albums in seven years from 1969-1976. And two more following which enjoyed commercial success but are not as well remembered as those from the bands most prolific era. All nine Platinum albums. IV has gone platinum 23 times. They rank among the top ten highest selling artists in Music History. Ranked #1 Hard Rock Artist of All-Time By VH1 Ranked #4 Rock & Roll Artist of All-Time By VH1 Ranked #14 All-Time By Rolling Stone’s “Immortals” Official Music Banter Zeppelin Thread Here’s one of Urban’s very first posts, always a staunch critic of the band for their larger then life performances, even he shared some love for the Zep when asked about his favorite album by the band. Quote:
Greatest Zeppelin Song MB Thread It takes 15 songs before the same one gets mentioned twice. How’s that for a deep discography. Over 40 different Zeppelin songs are mentioned as personal favorites in all. Ours is the folk music of the technological age. -- Jimmy Page Zeppelin is recognized mostly for their hard edge rock riffs and thunderous live performances. However they wrote several very good folk influenced songs including; Bron-Yr-Aur, That’s the Way, Thank You, Tangerine, Going to California and so many more. http://uk.gizmodo.com/led%20zeppelin.jpg My vocal style I haven't tried to copy from anyone. It just developed until it became the girlish whine it is today. -- Robert Plant Plants voice was another instrument that complimented the entire sound of the band. He was not a great lyricist or vocalist, but a perfect fit, as perfect as there has ever been. Please consider all of these factors as well as your personal feelings when deciding whether or not Led Zeppelin should be included amongst the final nominees for our inaugural Music Banter Hall of Fame class. Thanks in advance to everyone here who reads, votes and submits their own opinions. http://www.fanzone50.com/LedZeppelin...irownwings.jpg |
Well i had an idea that this would be the first choice, and it's a very difficult one for me.
First of all, i've never been a fan in particular of Led Zeppelin. Very early on a detested them yes, and later i've admired them and listened to them, but i've never actually felt the need to rave about them in the same way some people do. I think at first i pretty stupidly lumped it in with the whole 'hair-rock' thing, which i hated. The shreaky vocals, the solo's, the long-arse songs, i didn't do much for a fairly closed-minded indie fan like me. The 'No Stairway' bit in Wayne's World made me smug and happy. Once i actually opened myself up to them though then i let some of the love in. Zep IV, though i still hate Stairway, is a damn solid album, consistent and always shifting in its intentions. It's the first album that really gets me though, mostly as to me it contains their 2 best songs, Dazed and Confused and Babe I'm Gonna Leave You (christ almighty they do rock my socks). One thing i love about them is just how universal their appeal is. Put their songs on at a party and everyone will get into it and a load of them may know the words. School bands will imitate them to death and cover their songs. They announce one show in London and the world goes mad. I remember when a load of my mates hung a huge banner out of a school window with the Zep 4 emblems on it. Any band that can get this reaction out of people deserves heaps of respect off me, how many others bands out there can can you think of that are just THAT respected by everyone? Fact of the matter is, i'm a stubborn arsehole and in the end even i have to say i like them. I may be a relatively casual listener to them, but if i want to let my hair down i could do a lot worse. It's a yes from me, i hope they make it. |
I say no here's why
|
It's a yes from me.
One of the most consistent bands, with possible hits from every single album. It's very hard for me to choose their best song. I mean, i like almost all of their albums, song after song after song. Stairway will always be overrated, bcuz it's the number one song in Rock & Roll song in quite a few 'popular' lists(which people just tend to believe). Obviously, any song of such status would have been heard by every single person on earth and would automatically claim the overrated status. The only thing i didn't like about them is stealing ideas and not giving credit.(That doesn't make them 'less creative/original' for me nor do i get put off by such things) But I'm not sure how that was perceived back then. Was it a normal thing to do in the 70s? |
A solid "no" vote here.

Edit: Oh, not a big fan but yes. |
I'm not a huge fan but you have to be deaf or just dumb not to vote yes for Zeppilen. You can say they have bad vocals and songwriting, overrated pioneering or whatever. But in the end they made some great hard rock and had one of the best guitarists, bassists, and drummers ever. Unless your hall of fame has 10 bands in it, LZ should definitely be in.
|
I am going to say no Im afraid. They bore the arse off me and I like maybe five/six tracks by them. On virtue of album sales and popularity they probably WILL go in but I never dug them way back then and my opinion has never changed.
|
****in' A.
I love Led Zeppelin. I could go on for hours about how they are my favorite hard rock act ever, but I don't want to bore the pants off everyone. Just know this: If you hated everything Led Zeppelin ever did and thought they were utter trash, it should still be difficult to vote no. Their influence on modern rock is incredible. Though it would be inconceivable to say that the world wouldn't have any hard rock without Led Zeppelin, it would certainly be much, MUCH lamer. |
Yes. For the riffs.

Are you as discouraged as me over all the "no" votes already? I get that people don't like them but I don't get how anyone would exclude them from nomination to the hall of fame, they are clearly a ton of Zeppelin fans here. |

Also, I could do with people sending more nominations, would be very grateful! |

It's the hall of fame, not favorite artists. Why would we have a yes or no for it then? |

Thanks :)
I'll 'reserve' to nominate Pink Floyd then (since the Beatles were taken). |

"the Hall of Fame will be an ongoing project that with time should honour the music artists that are loved by the collective members of MB. " I don't know, am I missing something here? Maybe I'm just put off by the fascistic comments that people who don't vote "yes" for Zeppelin are ignorant. If the only goal is to honor influential musicians, there really doesn't need to be a poll at all. |
This is the MusicBanter Hall of Fame and inductions are meant to reflect the tastes of MB members.
Maybe if the people who vote no added a little effort as to why they voted no, then the comments might be less "fascistic". |

As far as voting "no," I have to pull out two quotes from Elvis Costello, because they summarize my feelings perfectly:
"I hate people like Led Zeppelin, not because they're total charlatans and thieves, but because it actually offends me...the whole crotch-thrusting element." "There are two kinds of rock and roll that are artistically bankrupt to me. One's the wimpy, "fuck me, I'm sensitive" Jackson Browne school of seduction, and the other is "Look at me, I've got a hairy chest and a big willy!" Led Zeppelin type." Apart from any idealistic offenses, I can't say that I enjoy their music. There are bands with poor ideas and no real merit (ELO comes to mind), but I enjoy some of their songs. I haven't heard a single Zep song that I even remotely enjoy listening to. I don't care for screechy vocals and guitar solos. The fact that their music represents a school of rock that I personally detest isn't the reason why I don't like them, but it doesn't help much either. I think the world would be better off if Stairway To Heaven was never played again, but hey, that's just me. |

Still I could not relate less to your interpretation of Zeppelin's music and would guess you've never given a full album a listen, not that it would matter, but you sound like you're describing a whole other band then the one I listen to. |
John Bonham
Jimmy Page John Paul Jones Robert Plant Four pretty talented musicians who together created a signature sound that stood apart from any other band back in the 70's when they were the most famous band in the world. Their body of work is amazing as well, how many other bands put out so many great albums/songs that people still talk about 30+ years later? Truly deserving of the MB Hall of Fame, good choice JJJ.:thumb: |

If this is to be a serious hall of fame it should be all about the bands that have actually contributed something. Zeppelin should be in without a doubt, and if they get snubbed for some godawful Indie band thats had like 2 albums that nobody bought I swear to god I'm leaving this site. Seriously lets go by your logic here. So much for The Beatles. They most diffinetely shouldn't be added, har har. See what I did there? |
Today is the last day the poll is open, unless the votes change Zeppelin will advance and be voted on my the panel after we get enough Nominees.
Piss me Off...post another nominee if you have one, otherwise I'll get another one ready. Or let Jack do Floyd or Urban the Clash or something like that. Hell better yet you do one. |
Next nomination is all set. Feel free to do another although i'll probably queue it so others get a go, i may do one as well.
|
How many spots do we have in this Hall of Fame, BTW?
Yes. Even though they aren't among my very favourite bands, they definitely deserve a place in the Hall simply because of the innovation and creativity expressed in their music. They broke many barriers and paved way for the future of heavy metal (even though that specific genre was just one of many that they ventured on). |

On second thought you're right, lets leave the element of surprise.
One more suggestion, any chance of cleaning up the thread. Deleting posts related to confusion on the nominating process. |
I'll leave them for a bit just incase anyone confused does a read through, i'll have a clean-up when those confusions start to lessen...
|
I'm sorry, but anyone who doesn't put Led Zeppelin in the Hall of Fame doesn't know what their talking about! Behind the Beatles, they're probably the most influential band of all time whether you like em or not.
|
Well unless we get a tremendious flood in of elitist Indie kids before the end of the day, they are pretty much a shoe in now.
|
I've voted 'no' simply because on a personal level I just can't justify having them in my top 10, never having had the seemingly obligatory Zeppelin phase. The debut is definitive, some tracks here and there; but to me they just pioneered ****-rock and Spinal Tap cliché... apologies to the Devoted. I suppose somebody had to drag the blues through the ****ter at some point.
Are Sabbath a possibility? In terms of importance to contemporary styles their influence was just as (if not more) widespread. I realise they were cheesy but it's Sabbath... |
The show must go on...
Nominated by 15Steps Joy Division http://mcnutt.files.wordpress.com/20...y-division.jpg I think Joy Division would be a great band to nominate for the hall of fame, and there are many reasons why. My first reason being that the band has released two of the greatest albums of all times, and are basically pioneers of the post punk genre. Ian Curtis wrote some of the greatest lyrics in history and sung said lyrics with what could be the most recognizable voices in music history. Although short lived, Joy Division are known as one of the best bands of all time and have had a huge impact on modern music. You know what to do... |
Hell yes. Two albums that are held in reverence by virtually everyone who has heard them.
|
I like Joy Division, appreciate them quite a bit for what they and the Bunnymen did. But by no account are the two albums they made (neither of which I would consider spectacular) considered to have a lasting impact. I like Ian Curtis, I really do, but their influence on post-punk is not definitive enough to have them included in a Hall of Fame. And despite how many fanboys are on this site, I think too many people romanticize more about Curtis's suicide than JD's music. Please compare them to the Bunnymen and JAMC before you shout me down.
A definite "no" on my behalf. Sorry. |
