5 songs that better be on your iPod or your iPod is crrrap - the thread

Credit goes to Jedey (I think) for the original "100 songs to have on your iPod or it's crrrap" thread, which inspired me to start this thread.

For the purposes of this thread, "iPod" is defined as "MP3 player of your choice"

One of the primary reasons I joined MusicBanter was to discover new music. So far, that endeavor has been a fantastic success. I regularly check many threads (especially the 'Albums You're Digging' one) and jot down the names of artists who intrigue me, which leads to investigation at a later date when I'm able to acquire works of those artists for my personal use.

I figure this thread could help with artist/song discovery, as well as provoking discussion and providing entertainment. The idea is to post five songs that you'd hope to find on any random stranger's iPod.

Well, here goes nothing.
1. Brand New - Seventy Times 7

This song (according to Wikipedia) was written after Jesse's (lead singer of Brand New) best friend, a then-member of Taking Back Sunday, slept with his girlfriend. I find that it perfectly depicts teenage heartbreak and angst, and it's been my "angry song" for a long time.
2. The Cure - Just Like Heaven
Another deeply emotional song, I absolutely love the way Smith wrote and sings the lyrics.
3. Rod Stewart - Maggie May
4. Don McLean - American Pie
This song IS culture. I've read many interpretations of the lyrics (since Don has almost entirely refused to explain them, aside from the song itself being about the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly), and it's just astounding what people can extract from this song.
5. Guster - Satellite

James 05-19-2010 08:14 AM

1.Os Mutantes-Panis Et Circenses
2.Dog Faced Hermans-Hear The Dogs
3.Leonard Cohen-Famous Blue Raincoat
4.Boredoms-(Circle)
5.Junk-F U Frank

sidewinder 05-19-2010 08:44 AM

People haven't heard The Cure's Just Like Heaven enough? :p:

Bulldog 05-19-2010 12:05 PM

In no order;
1. The Rolling Stones - Hide Your Love
^ Everything that blues-rock has over any other genre is within this song.

2. Electronic - Getting Away With It
^ Electronic's (made from bits of New Order, the Smiths, Kraftwerk and the Pet Shop Boys) first and easily best single. Sheer pop perfection.

3. Burning Spear - Tradition
^ For reasons something like the Stones song I've already mentioned, as in everything reggae has over all other music can be heard here.

4. The Future Sound Of London - Omnipresence
^ Stands as what people who say they hate 'techno' are missing out on.

5. The Flying Burrito Brothers - Hot Burrito #1
^ Ditto for 'country'.

Sansa Stark 05-19-2010 12:13 PM

That Electronic song is one of my greatest musical disappointments, I expected it to be awesome because of it having two of my favorite musicians but it was utter crap I think

Five songs that better be on your whatever but you probably don't have anyway

1. Cold Wars - Family Fodder
2. Hungry, So Angry - Medium Medium
3. Der Kommisar - Falco
4. What Difference Does It Make? - The Smiths
5. Rudie Can't Fail - The Clash

Everyone should have this song on their iPod so that they can listen to it right before they start a shift:

FETCHER. 05-19-2010 02:08 PM

I've never heard any of those never mind having them on my ipod. :(

James 05-19-2010 02:22 PM

Well get to it then.

The songs don't have to be obscure. And you'd be surprised, especially with my age group (18-20), how musically challenged some people are. :p:

I will!! :O

mr dave 05-19-2010 03:47 PM

i don't have a single track from those listed and i'm quite happy about that :p:

in my view one's ipod is crap if it doesn't contain at least these

Amon Tobin - 4 ton mantis
^proof that downbeat electro jazz (or whatever people want to call it) can be heavy as hell

QOTSA - go with the flow
^current live versions obliterate the studio version but it's still a modern classic.

Jimi Hendrix - House Burning Down
^because if you have this one you likely have more and there's never enough Jimi.

Smashing Pumpkins - disarm
^for retrospective introspection

Radiohead - Exit (music for a film)
^for the outro

Easily my least favorite QofSA single...

I can get down with this list, nice job sir. I'd pick another SP track though as I tired of Disarm almost as soon as it became a single. Too bad because I initially loved it. I hate when that happens.

ribbons 05-19-2010 04:07 PM

Nick Drake - At The Chime Of A City Clock
Scott Walker - The War Is Over (Sleepers-Epilogue)
Dionne Warwick - Promises, Promises
Belle & Sebastian - Fox In The Snow
The Band - Whispering Pines

Agreed. I'd probably pick something from Gish. I Am One or Rhinoceros.

Really? I think the Ganging Up is easily their best album.

jackhammer 05-21-2010 06:00 PM

I don't have any single songs from those lists on my ipod but do have two in my general library. Does that mean I suck? I hope so... :)

Nope, I have probably 6 songs on my mp3 player, but more in my library
in my mp3 player it's like
Gaga - Fashion
La Roux - Bulletproof
Medium Medium - the Glitterhouse
Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit
Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight
& some Albert Hammond Jr song

this list is ****ing ridiculous I realise, I only use my mp3 player when I go out to smoke

Someone explain to me what the deal with this band is.
There were bands by the thousands in London knocking out the kind of stuff with equal if not more quality than they were at the same time.

Is it just the novelty of them being Brazilian or something ?

I think we should take in the socio political aspect of the music that they were playing at the time and brasilia music definitely shares traits with latter day Punk in that it broke boundaries both political and social.

TheBig3 05-21-2010 06:57 PM

I think I'm going to take this too literally but I'll give it a shot anyhow.

These songs better be on your iPod because you're probably on public transit, and you're going to need to do what it takes to get you out of your funk...

1. Goldfinger - 99 Red Balloons (only because I'm assuming you don't speak German, and you'll want to sing along)

2. Grand Funk Railroad - American Band (strictly because this song has more Cowbell than Wisconsin)

3. Sam & Dave - Hold On! I'm coming! (because you can sing this one even if you don't speak English, and you can't not dance)

4. James Brown - My Thang (because there are barely words, and it will teach you how to pick up women on the bus in the first 15 seconds of the song)

5. My Morning Jacket - Highly Suspicious (because at this point you might as well have a soundtrack to the weird stares you're getting while you continue your funky ass dance party.)

I don't understand the reasoning behind this one. You know there's an English version by the original artist right?

Raust 05-23-2010 11:19 AM

Love - The Red Telephone
This song is fantastic, Love is one of those bands that is extremely overlooked.
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Castles Made of Sand
Favorite Hendrix song. The tempo is amazing along with the trippy guitar work.
Led Zeppelin - Over the Hills and Far Away
What an incredible song a must have for anyone who appreciates music in the slightest!
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Best Pink Floyd song.
Smashing Pumpkin - Mayonaise
One of the great things about songs is that they can be interpreted many ways. This songs lyrics are extremley vague and lets the listener relate to it in there own way. Because of this that's what makes this song amazing.

Basically what jackhammer said, the historybehind it is just fascinating and the music is so passionate. I love Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil and basically all the Tropicalia artists.

I've never heard the Goldfinger version but, yeah, the 7 Seconds version is great. :)

The Bullet 05-23-2010 01:38 PM

artist-song-why

Metallica- One (S&M version)- heavy and beautiful. Best Metallica song? (the live version?)

Buckethead- The Landing Beacon- best Buckethead song, and best Michael Jackson tribute

Sixx A.M.- Life is Beautiful- best Sixx A.M. song, even though they only have one album.

Guns 'N Roses- Estranged- Their best song, aside from maybe the last song couple of songs on Chinese Democracy (but that's not Guns 'N Roses, really). I chose this, not because it's better, but because it's more essential. This is true Guns 'N Roses, off of their best album (UYI2 for life).

Dream Theater- Octavarium- from what I've heard, best DT song by far. There's a middle section that's kind of dull but the begining and the end... My God... I don't think I've heard anything like it...

I like this list, especially for Mayonnaise and Castles Made of Sand. The others are not favorites by those artists but are still very good.

1. Can - Moonshake

Classic Krautrock with some swing in it's soul. If you don't have this then there's something wrong goin' on.

2. Peter Gabriel - The Rhythm Of The Heat

An off-kilter piece that embodies the 80's fascination with 3rd world rhythms while still sounding fresh today. Gotta love the last minute and a half especially!

3. Nujabes - World's End Rhapsody

One of the best single tracks from the man who was the coolest producer in hip-hop. R.I.P.!

4. Coheed & Cambria - Guns Of Summer

Emo-proggers go industrial with awesome results. Guess a new drummer really does make all the difference!

5. Luther Vandross - Never Too Much

The coolest motherfucker on the planet. If the bass doesn't get you drooling, then his voice and everything else will.

I know. I own the album and its ****. (the english version). I'd rather they quit pandering to the dollar bill and stuck to the german version.

homesick.alien 05-29-2010 09:07 PM

Bob Dylan- Subterranean Homesick Blues. You just need a Bob Dylan song on your mp3 player.
Pink Floyd- Let There Be More Light (screw it, the whole album). Psychedelia at it's finest.
Jeff Buckley- Morning Theft.
Radiohead- Paranoid Android. For that amazing mood changing song, with futuristic guitars and all that shizzam.
Talking Heads- The Great Curve. For those beats.

quite obvious ones, really.

AleG 05-30-2010 08:29 AM

1. Kreator - Crisis Of Disorder

2. Satyricon - The Pentagram Burns
"Rise my friend - march to war!" Perfect song to listen when you're off to class.

3. Marduk - Imago Mortis

4. Marduk - Cloven Hoof

5. Rammstein - Mein Herz Brennt

2)Joe Satriani - Surfing With The Alien - just because you should. do i even need a reason?

3) Alkaline Trio - Radio - In fact, everything by them, especially the albums Maybe I'll Catch Fire and From Here To Infirmary.

4) Bellowhead - Bruton Town - because it is totally folking great.

5) In Flames - Brush The Dust Away - cos i couldn't have a list without something metal!
