What Type of Music Relaxes You the Most?
What do you think is the most soothing relaxing type of music? I want to recommend some office music to my clients who are physicians, music that will be very soothing and relaxing to their patients. If you have a recommendation for a specific song, that would be great!
Since this is my first post, let me introduce myself. My name is Brandon, I live in North Carolina, and I love people. I'm a business consultant and I specialize in helping my clients (small business owners) get thousands of dollars in free advertising. It's great to be here and I can't wait to hear your feedback. All the best, Brandon |
Well, I find drone and stoner doom pretty relaxing, but those probably wouldn't work well in the environment you're talking about. How about some Paco de Lucia?
|
Pat Metheny & Charlie Haden ~ Beyond The Missouri Sky(Short Stories) is a very relaxing album.

John Fahey would probably do the trick if you want gentle instrumental folk guitar. Or if you wanted ambient landscapes, some Stars of the Lid.
|
Beach House!
|
Hammock is one of the bands that relaxes me
Sigur Rós is relaxing too |
jazz tends to put me into a calm, reflective state of mind
|
Any of Chopin's pieces, especially the Nocturnes.
|
For some reason blasting Techno music seems to relax me.
Although it makes most excited. |
Folk, like the decemberists..
or definitely some Cat Empire especially the song "Lullaby" Example: The video really does it, too. xD |
Ambient world music like Sigur Ros or Dead Can Dance
|
Ambient, Ambient, Ambient, Modern Classical, Progressive House, Smooth Jazz, New Age, World, etc.
|
I renege on my earlier post to say that sticking Pinback on shuffle is my ultimate calm-down, chill-out music.
|
If i start listening to any song by the Postal Service I am at ease, maybe excluding This Place is A Prison.
|
I listen to Myself breathing. I dont listen to music when I want to be calm, I listen to my heart, and my breathing.
No Im kidding. I listen to Cake. I dont know, his voice makes me calm. |
|
Any classical, Regina Spektor, The La's, Zombies, Tom Waits, Sam Phillips, Belle and Sebastian.

I'd say you couldn't go far wrong with any of Erik Satie's works if you're after a good, relaxing working environment, especially the gymnopedies.
As for me personally, I just love playin some 50s vocal jazz like Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole or Ella Fitzgerald. Some good old country and western's great listening after a long day as well. |
Electric Tears by Buckethead is a very relaxing album (with the execption of a few tracks). Great one, too. I think it's crossed the line to being part of my life.

Neurosis - A Sun That Never Sets, is good to chill to.
|
I really dig some slow, atmospheric instrumentals when I have time to sit back, not do **** and just chill. Earth's The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull is a prime example, as is Red Sparowes' Every Red Heart Shines Toward the Red Sun and Pelican's The Fire in our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw. I just realized that each of those albums have retardedly long titles. Coincidence?

I'd argue. I don't think it does, but that's just me. I'd say it's one of BH's best albums. Better than Crime Slunk Scene or Monsters and Robots (and that's saying something). |
Definately check out Mew ("156", "Comforting Sounds" and "Special" especially), I find it so relaxing. Also, look up "Rainbow Flows" by Husky Rescue - without a doubt the most mellow song I've ever heard.
I would post Youtube links but I can't until I have 15 posts. :( |
I find Buckethead's album Colma more relaxing than Electric Tears, but both are great
|
I can actually chillout to real noisy stuff if it's at the right volume and I'm in the right mood! However I almost always listen to the same band when I am either reading or catching up on sleep (I work nights- gimmie a break!)
Not many people would listen to them which is understandable but the added dimension is their lyrical content and imagery which goes back to Dark Age Britain. |
Classical piano, definitely. I'm a pianist so there's really nothing more appropriate I think. Also sometimes really obscure stuff like stuff you'd hear at a Cirque du Soleil performance.
|
Jack Johnson is relaxing and it tends to put me in a good mood.
|
|
Ambient of course.
|
Unfortunately I don't spend that much time just "relaxing" unless I'm watching a movie or show, which isn't really relaxing. If I put something on while going to sleep or read (or both in most cases), it'll bee downtempo/IDM electronic or mellow post rock. Sometimes that stuff doesn't really relax me though, it can sometimes make me anxious if it moves too slowly. But if I'm going to bed or reading it's no problem.

One more suggestion: A few days ago somebody asked about Gregorian chants, and then I remembered there are two or three albums (I think they were released with the name Chant) which have been very popular in the last years. Just take a listen, in case you like them:

Gregorian chants? Really? I think that stuff is dreadful
Anyway, it's dead week for me and I've been listening to nonstop Pinback and Jack Johnson as a kind of ambient background noise for studying. |
Indie calms me down I guess.
