Or D&B with a jazzy sounding female singing in it. Or anything that's experimental for the sake of being experimental and doesn't achieve anything except experimental(ness).

Agreed with it all until I got to the bolded part. :(

^Been a favorite for almost as long as I can remember.

Have you listened to anything other than Trout Mask Replica?

I guess I'm done.

It amazes me more that you even mentioned Captain Beefheart, (they're relatively semi-obscure imo), I never heard them on the radio, they are one of those bands that the average person doesn't know about, and you'll never hear about them unless it's a music critic or someone on a music forum. (I have their best of CD, I like some of their stuff.)

What is this? Some muso analyzing a pop band as if they're supposed to be some groundbreaking progressive rock ensemble?

Speaking of cheese, cheddar cheese is my personal favorite...

I really like those ones... :)

Maybe not refuse to like EVER since I haven't listened to an entire album but...

The Hold Steady

Annoying ass voice from some middle aged balding guy trying to relate to pre-teen as he rants on and on about stupid bull****. The music is nothing new at all. The backup vocals are cheesy and annoying as hell. Even the random piano parts suck.

Yes, and although there's more cohesive Beefheart than what I'm focusing on, I still don't like it.

Anyway, I give myself a good bit of time after discovering any artist that's new to me and generally try to afford that artist a wide consideration, but when I do that and I still don't like it, that's when I decide for good.
Although, I do have to admit, when I feel like people are digging obscure crap just because it's obscure, I tend to already go into it with a sense that the music is going to be garbage because their tastes are usually based on everything but the actual quality of the music as a whole, imo.

You don't even have an appreciation for NOFX? Well I guess it's pointless to argue with an Englishman in his 30s about punk, I should know better. :p:

I'm just not into old school "original" punk, with a few exceptions. Maybe one day I'll get into that stuff, but it won't affect my taste for more poppy punk. And don't get me wrong, there are plenty of mainstream pop punk bands I hate, so please let's not assume I'm a fan of Sum41, Good Charlotte, Fall Out Boy, Avril, and all that shyte. I'm talking about 90s California street/skater punk bands like Pennywise, Lagwagon, etc. basically the Fat Wreck/Epitaph stuff. But hey...we can agree to disagree. I grew up with a lot of that stuff and I like it. And Dookie was a fine album, albeit much more mainstream than the other stuff I liked so of course more people know about it and will diss it if they're not into the style. And again, I make no excuses for post-Dookie Green Day...I never liked them beyond that album but I also don't hate them, I just ignore them.

They have been pretty cheesy and boring as hell for the past 15 or so years, yes. But they were good before that.

Ah fuck this thread. I guess I shouldn't go around trying to defend stuff, it's irritating. :D We all have different perspectives on things and will never hear something the same way as someone else.

Every indie band that lists the Beach Boys as a primary influence.

Fuck off. Just fuck off. Your ability to do four-part harmonies might help gain audiences in the toddler range but it doesn't really give credence to the ineffable infatuation modern indie press has with you. Especially when every goddamn song sounds the same: your lead singer does his best impression of Donald Duck while your synth player enjoys some novel melody. I seriously can't stand this bleepity-bloop underwater Pet Sounds shit.
