Robert Randolph has the skills.

I would like to see more drums and the drum machine and whoever invented kicked off the planet.

No i wouldn't like to see that. Drum machines suit a certain type of music, for example dance music or industrial/EBM, they just don't feel the same with live drums.

I've seen Robert Randolph a handful of times, and he's always put on an incredible performance. He was amazing back in the day, but his output over the past 2-3 years has been horrible over-produced rubbish. If you get a chance to check out a bootleg of his live performance closing the legendary NYC venue The Wetlands (i.e. literally. It was the last performance ever held at the venue) it is unbelievable, and well worth scouring the interwebz for.

Yeah, pedal steel guitar is sadly under-represented outside country. Okkervil River put it to good use in this song around the 3m mark.

There has never been an instance where a drum machine improved music over a live drummer. The drum machine is the suckiest thing that ever sucked on the planet, it's a soulless piece of crap.
