  • Talking about music you like is synonymous with talking about yourself. And when people "listen", they're simply waiting for their turn to talk. Music discussion is a majority percent: self-love.
  • Same goes for other discussion, which is why you can consider this masturbation.
  • People often defend their music preference with as much vigor as they would defend their own morality. The intensity at which they do so speaks volumes about their personalities. And then other times, it's just a case of someone not knowing what they like until enough people tell them what it should be.
  • Music preference is, at all times, a virus.
  • There are an embarrassing amount of people here that are likely to misinterpret the above bullet.
  • Vanilla is horny 100 percent of the time. This cannot be refuted.

^^ Then why do you stay if that's all you've learnt? Or are we all just trying to be witty?

That is one thing I've learned from Musicbanter that isn't music related, everyone is attention seeking, and almost always does no one like to give praise where it is due simply because everyone here wants that praise. Which is sad really..

Janszoon 10-08-2010 07:57 PM

MB has taught me that no matter how long I live there is certain horrible music from the 90s that I will never escape.

Oh come on... I obviously find out about new music. But that's to be expected. Why would I sit here and waste time making a post that absolutely everyone else here knows by default?

I like this place. I get something out of it. But I don't have to explain that to you if you're looking for some kind of validation for me being here. You do you, and I'll do me. That's about as much as you really need to know.

OctaneHugo 10-08-2010 09:58 PM

I learned I'll never complete any project in a reasonable amount of time.

Freebase Dali 10-08-2010 10:05 PM

^ Me too. Well, I always knew that... but the idea really crystallized here.

Not as long as there are still angsty 13 year olds discovering Nirvana for the first time, then learning that you were their age when it all happened.

Music Banter has taught me that there are far more miserable, pretentious douchenozzles out there than I'd ever previously imagined.

However, aforementioned miserable, pretentious douchenozzles are pretty good at giving music recommendations and getting me into subgenres I never would've considered on my own. ;)

CanwllCorfe 10-08-2010 11:23 PM

Well I don't think MB really taught me anything in particular. It mainly helped me break out of my shell and delve into other genres. Not many people here are into club oriented electronic music, so at first I felt awkward. But now my tastes are far weirder and now it takes 10x as long to find new music.

Thanks MB

It's not the 90s I dislike--there's plenty of good music from the 90s--it's the fact some of worst music from that decade has somehow remained popular.

Haha I like this one...

Even if you have nothing in common with other listeners you'll find something to talk about.

adidasss 10-09-2010 09:14 AM

It thought me that 99% of people who use the word pretentious are just kinda stupid and threatened by other people being more intelligent/knowledgeable than they are so they feel the need to justify their own inferiority/mediocrity by labeling others who can actually articulate their opinion with a negative term.

Um, what else....yeah, it taught me patience. I think there's a tremendous amount of difference between me from 5 and a half years ago and the me you read now.

Talking with other intelligent people also thought me to be much more articulate and try harder if I want my opinion to be heard/taken seriously.

Musically I don't really think much has changed.

Dom 10-09-2010 11:14 AM

In the short time I've been here I've learned to not care what other people think of my music taste, because in the end there'll always be elitists who think my taste is inferior, when really I just listen to what I like whereas they listen to what makes them sound better.

:D

I think it depends. I really don't like the concept of "superior" music tastes, and a lot of people here seem to believe that they have them. That's a little pretentious to me.

Many of the people on here that could be considered "pretentious" are absolutely fantastic at thoughtfully articulating why they don't like a band or an album WITHOUT coming off as an enormous asshole. That's fine.

However, there's always a few douchebags out there that seem to crawl out of the woodwork to pick fights any time someone expresses an opinion they disagree with.

(Oh, and to clear things up, I was kind of, you know, joking in my previous post. :/)

VEGANGELICA 10-09-2010 01:37 PM

MusicBanter has taught me the following:

* I like some Dubstep songs. A lot!
* What Dubstep is.
* I don't like a lot of music but just a few songs here and there.

* I really do like the whole process of making music more than listening to it.
* I love discussing songs and lyrics with the people who made them.
* Most musicians seem much more interested in their own musical process than in other people's (meaning mine). ;)

* I am much more social than I thought I was.
* Some strangers are pretty darn nice and I like them more than I thought I would.
* I am easily amused by people and feel inspired by them. Many people are really very funny, and I love joking around with them.

* Some people like to argue even more than I do. !!
* I like trading insults more than I thought I would. Sometimes I kind of like to fight and goad people a bit.
* People who disagree greatly on some topic can actually learn to like each other or at least have some respectful interactions.

* British people aren't any more polite than other groups of people. They sound so genteel on TV! :(
* The world is smaller than I thought it was, and people are more similar than I realized before.
* Being vegan doesn't mean *always* being a social outcast. ;)

Actually, no, Janszoon, I don't really have a feel for your tastes, like a lot of us admitted in that one thread. Are you pretty much referring to grunge?

Urban Hat€monger ? 10-09-2010 04:34 PM

I don't know why Nirvana get this much hate.

Especially as Pearl Jam are from the very same era and about 100 times worse than Nirvana ever were.

I hate Pearl Jam more than Nirvana, they even manage to make Neil Young sound ****. But I don't think they're popular these days so i mentioned Nirvana as everyone I know seems to like them now.

OctaneHugo 10-09-2010 04:59 PM

Pearl Jam has some good stuff out of the late 90's.

This forum made me a believer of post-punk, New Wave, Indie stuff, shoegaze, and a multitude of other things. No small feat considering how egotistical I am. :pimp:

In short, people here have gotten me into more stuff here than I've done in turn for all of you. Damn it!

I love you guys. :bringit:

Grunge is a big part of it, yes. Plus Britpop to certain extent. And a bunch of other "alternative" type stuff, like the Chili Peppers 90s output, Smashing Pumpkins, etc.

Ahhh, I love mainstream 90s rock (well, some of it)!

Mainstream 90s rock bands that make up a significant portion of my library:

Nirvana
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Weezer
Smashing Pumpkins
Rage Against the Machine
311
Green Day

I think Weezer is probably the only band on that list that I'm not completely sick to death of.

I'm not sure what you actually listen to come to think of it.
I've seen your RYM and you have a ridiculous amount of records in your collection, but you haven't rated any of them so I didn't know which ones you consider good and which ones you're not keen on.

I think I know one band you love: The Fall?
