Musicbanter Taught Me Something

No matter how informed we think we are musically or misinformed about a certain band or genre, MB is usually there to set the record straight or convert you to a band or genre.

So what has MB done for you?

http://image.guardian.co.uk/sys-imag...thefall460.jpg

Even though I am in my late 30's I am always open to new music but I just couldn't get into The Fall. All I could hear was a drunken old git mumbling into a microphone about nothing in particular seemingly getting by with this average crap.

Due to Urban crapping their albums out all over the damn forum I began to delve into them a little more and began to get into them a little more whilst still not being fully convinced about a band that changes it's personnel every other week. I mean how could this band achieve this sort of longevity by changing it's band members so often? The answer is that irascible Mark E Smith and once I figured out that he wasn't a guy paying lots of money to have a backing band so he could rant against everything and instead is a man that doesn't know what else to do in life, my views began to change.

After all if you look closely at other artists you can see similar patterns. Lemmy and Motorhead, Ozzy and his backing band, Tony Iommi and Sabbath- they all continue with their band names despite numerous line up changes and I like them so why not The Fall?

Over the past year I have even begun to buy physical copies of their albums and of course; now and again there are tracks that I don't like but the more I listen to The Fall the more I realise that the ideal of the band and what it means is what draws me to them.

So even though I try not to behave like a blind sheep when it comes to music, I do confess that because of MB I have high regard for this band.

So it's your turn people!

Mark E Smith IS the Fall. The band may change, but The Fall never will.
I don't know The Fall, but I know The Fall all too well!
I know that there are only a handful of bands in the music world that have the sinister ability to be all consuming.

I fear The Fall. I avoid The Fall.
That man is God AND the Devil!

Say goodbye to the rest of your music collection Lee.

TheCunningStunt 10-08-2010 04:55 PM

I'm not sure, it may have taught me there's more to music than Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, Libertines, Queen, AC/DC and a load of other dull predictable bands I listened to at the time I joined.

Or maybe I just grew up and found better music.
I think it's a bit of both, though it's no coincidence that in the year and a half I've been here my music taste has expanded and changed quite a bit.

MB

I will still have the same amount of quality/crap in my collection come what may but The Fall are certainly one of those bands that should go down in history for just being exactly what music should be- uncluttered and performed by people with far too much to say and not enough time to say it.

I wouldn't like to meet him though. I am sure he could piss me off within five minutes of meeting him.

I wouldn't worry too much. I actually think that you're one of those people who could well be immune to The Fall, judging by your all encompassing attitude towards music.

right-track 10-08-2010 05:21 PM

What has MusicBanter taught me?
I came here 5 years or so ago believing I had a narrow and elitist attitude towards music which took me all of 4 years to confirm.
It taught me to despise elitist pricks that pretend to like certain types of music so as to appear superior. Giving true elitists the unfair misconception of appearing arrogant.
They give elitism a bad name for those who really do have a superior taste in music, like me. :D

I learned that metal is a lot better than expected.I guess I had a biased view because my stepfather likes some pretty lame sounding "LOL br00tal" metal. Also, I learned a lot about Drone Metal and Shoegaze, so who knows where I'll go next :)

DevonWilliams 10-08-2010 05:46 PM

Nothing but a few songs on limewire so far.

I'm new, and I do expect big things though.

Limewire will destroy your computer.

Another lesson taught.

I'll work you into electronica. One day...

Limewire is awful. keyword: torrents

Music Banter has changed my musical life in big ways. Perhaps the biggest change is the fact that I no longer listen to a couple songs from an album (usually the singles) and then judge entire albums/bands from only a couple minutes while disregarding the rest of their work. Everything is an album experience now, aside from the occasional shuffle of familiar songs.

I learned that too, except I've made the jump from torrents to mediafire.

I used to only care about singles but now I've got entire albums filling up my MP3 player. I used to think having more than three days worth of music was absurd, but now I've got a lot more than that. also:

I'm only well versed in IDM and Trip hop, but I'd love to see what electronica you have up your sleeve. I only like Deadmau5 so far, but I have a feeling that I should be listening to a lot more.

Urban Hat€monger ? 10-08-2010 06:12 PM

Music Banter has taught me that there are a hell of a lot of sheep around who will just blindly follow the next trend and who will also acquire the same handful of albums as everybody else of a particular genre just to say they know about it.

That in return has shown me I have nothing to fear about listening to music and that I don't really care what people think about what I listen to. I don't care if an album has sold 20 copies or 20 million copies, if I like it I like it.

It has also taught me to appreciate people with their own minds, regardless of whether they like the same music as me or not as they are few & far between.

jackhammer 10-08-2010 06:16 PM

I hope I am not one of those sheep despite liking the Fall :(

I was hoping that my unashamed love for old school Metal rekindled your interest;)

Urban Hat€monger ? 10-08-2010 06:19 PM

Oh it has

I was sorting out my cd collection the other day & uploaded a load of old Sepultura, Suicidal Tendencies, Megadeth, Cathedral, Danzig & Samhain albums.

I might even go find my old Testament & Exodus albums and do those too.
Oh and I downloaded that Death Angel album you said I should give another chance to.

That's kind of how I'm beginning to feel. Besides The Fall I really haven't discovered much in the way of artists through this site, that is artists with whom I have a strong desire to explore their entire discography. I've gotten a lot of albums "just to say [I] know about it" from this website but in the last few months I've really began to analyze myself from a musical standpoint and I've come to this conclusion, I'm a metalhead at heart. While I think I did the right thing by exploring indie rock this year, I got a decent bounty of albums, but metal is where I belong.

I know how you feel.
I got to the stage at some point during mid 2008 when I swear I would have killed someone at having to listen to another psychedelic indie folk album just so I could claim to be up to date with what was coming out.

In the end I just thought fuck it, I can't be bothered anymore.

Speaking of which, I also learned that liking Animal Collective is socially unacceptable.

RVCA 10-08-2010 06:42 PM

MB has also taught me that no matter what you could possibly think about an album/artist, there is someone out there with the exact opposite opinion.

Urban Hat€monger ? 10-08-2010 06:43 PM

I've noticed that with Violent & Funky.

He seems to like bands for the exact same reason I seem to hate them, and vice versa.

Maribel 10-08-2010 06:48 PM

I totally agree with Urban here.

I listen to what interests me, not what I feel obligated to listen to because it's new and hip.

jackhammer 10-08-2010 06:51 PM

I do have to say that despite it's apparent disregard for individualism, a truckload of people on here are mindless robots liking the same old hyped bands/ albums year in/ year out.

I could actually handle that if they also spouted their opinions on lesser known albums that DIDN'T get hyped but they still liked and wanted to promote.

Even if you are the only person on here to like an album it doesn't mean you should hide it. Heard a release this year that DIDN'T get hyped? Mention it and push it.

Have some balls.

Haha okay, because sometimes I feel like I get some negative views because I'm so damn picky and generally listen to a lot of bands that sound very similar...

Yes but u don't sit there and talk about new bands every five minutes as though they are the second coming!

There are still bands out there making great music even if they are more than a few years old and that really annoys me when they are not given the chance.

Hyperbole and a Half: The Alot is Better Than You at Everything

DON'T DO THAT. DO YOU ONLY HAVE TWO FINGERS?

Dr.Seussicide 10-08-2010 07:15 PM

Musicbanter has taught me, I believe, everything that I know about music. I'm not going to be that elitist prick that thinks that I came to this site with the wealth of knowledge that I have today. I will say that I owe, honestly, 70% of my musical knowledge to MB. And for that I will be forever grateful. This site is honestly one of best sites that I have ever come across and I'm proud to say that I am a part of this wonderful flourishing, community.

If there is one band in particular that I'd like to singularly thank MB is for introducing me to Carissa's Wierd. Words cannot describe how perfect this band is to me and how much they've done for me. They're simply perfect and I owe me finding them to Musicbanter. This is one band that I'd say with the utmost, 100% confidence that they are in fact one of the best bands I've ever had the pleasure of listening. In fact, if I ever come across anyone that thinks they're not good, I'll instantly think that you have poor musical tastes. Even if you dabble in Sigh, to Austere, to Coltrane, to The Residents, to Nick Drake.. Simply put, everyone has that one band that they'd put their neck on the line. This, is mine. And Musicbanter, you have my sincerest thanks for that.

No I have drunken Englishman fingers and it gets tiresome typing out words when a single letter will suffice.

Alfred 10-08-2010 07:19 PM

I learned how to download large quantities of songs at a time without paying a cent.

Edit: but more importantly, exactly what Dr. Seussicide said in his first paragraph. Thanks MB.

Freebase Dali 10-08-2010 07:46 PM

MB has taught me, or helped me fully understand:

  • Most people renouncing a musical movement are unaware of their place in another that became accepted for the same basic reasons, but with a different spin.
  • They will deny that.
  • Talking about music you like is synonymous with talking about yourself. And when people "listen", they're simply waiting for their turn to talk. Music discussion is a majority percent: self-love.
  • Same goes for other discussion, which is why you can consider this masturbation.
  • People often defend their music preference with as much vigor as they would defend their own morality. The intensity at which they do so speaks volumes about their personalities. And then other times, it's just a case of someone not knowing what they like until enough people tell them what it should be.
  • Music preference is, at all times, a virus.
  • There are an embarrassing amount of people here that are likely to misinterpret the above bullet.
  • Vanilla is horny 100 percent of the time. This cannot be refuted.

Charlemagne 10-08-2010 07:53 PM

Because of musicbanter I:
Appreciate other genres, because of musicbanter I now enjoy post-hardcore/emo, rap and most importantly I discovered now one of my favorite types of music, folk-punk thanks to this website. As a matter of fact I went from typical indie kid to something much more diverse. Plus it introduced me to cllct.com, which may be one of the greatest music websites I've ever found. So thank you musicbanter!
