Force-Fed Music

Admit it, you have this one friend with an awful taste in music. In some cases, that friend may or may not try to convert you into a fan. While I've tried to convert people into fans of stuff, I at least try to tailor my recommendations to whatever they might like. Some people like shoving whatever band they like down your throat and you're pretending to like them because you don't want to hurt his or her feelings.

Currently, I'm having this AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL ATROCIOUS song pushed down my esophagus.

UGHUGHUUUUULARGHH SO BAD

Paedantic Basterd 11-26-2010 01:51 PM

I have one friend with taste so dubious that a recommendation from him makes me lose interest in an album.

Hmm... If my friend had a vagina I might pretend to like this to get laid... Well, that's a major might.

sidewinder 11-26-2010 02:04 PM

My god. That stuff is like the worst possible combination of genres imaginable. Unreal.

clutnuckle 11-26-2010 02:19 PM

My friends listen to dubstep, pop-punk and/or Radiohead/Animal Collective. I would rather talk about tumbleweed stocks than music with them.

Dayvan Cowboy 11-26-2010 02:28 PM

at least they talk about half respectable bands. I actually enjoy Animal Collective.
I know a girl whose favourite band is this:

ARGHHHHH MY EARS I'M DYING EEEEEE MY EYES ARE BLEEDING

I think this is why people hate the American middle class.

If I come back to this thread one more time I may end up vomiting.

Insane Guest 11-26-2010 03:57 PM

My cousin is a big fan of scrEaMO. I'm a big fan of Death Metal.

There is a big ****ing difference. He's always trying to get his scrEaMO music on me, and I just hate it. I tell him though.

He was also trying to get this **** on me...

s_k 11-26-2010 04:06 PM

I have no friends with a bad music taste.
I have friends that play music that I wouldn't, but I don't have friends that play music that's just plain dumb.
My parents sometimes look at TV shows like X-factor and such. That's the worst music I hear in my environment. And I just run for safety whenever something like that is on ;).

UGHLOAGHULGH that was pretty bad. At first, I thought the lettering in the back said ATD-I and I would've screamed "BLASPHEMY!!"

Also, some chick I know is trying to convince me that this:

Is a legitimate, decent, HARDCOAR band.

sidewinder 11-26-2010 04:50 PM

 I was going to say POPCOAR but it's more like BUBBLECOAR.

I think it should be called popcorn.

s_k 11-26-2010 04:50 PM

What has been heard.
Cannot be unheard.
noeees....

I like Justin Bieber and alot of stuff, but I feel tempted to close down my browser after listening to that...that music is SOOOO shit, I can't even imagine...oh lordy, troubles so bad. :(

clutnuckle 11-26-2010 05:44 PM

Haha, the most annoying kind of musical elitist is the kind who spits upon pop music for being 'generic' (a word that most of them can't define if you asked them to), and then they end up listening to that trash. Justin Bieber is infinitely better than bands like Blood on the Dance Floor, Allstar Weekend, MSI, etc... At least his music isn't a gimmick.

SATCHMO 11-26-2010 05:50 PM

I was actually won over to the Grateful Dead this way. I used to despise them.I had a friend that used to come over to my place daily, smoke me out and then proceed to inundate me with Dead bootlegs and live albums. At the time I thought it was barely a fair exchange, but after a while the music really began to grow on me.

s_k 11-26-2010 06:16 PM

For me that was "Jack-a-roe", which is a dylan cover, or maybe even a traditional song, but I loved it immediately. But then, I was never force-fed the Dead (that sounds... nasty)

Kaimon 11-26-2010 06:41 PM

Never really had anyone force music on me, but I remember that when the orchestra class went to the school news rooms to use the computers for whatever our little hearts desired, my friend and her friend blasted this song SO LOUD.

I was on the other side of the room, wearing over the ear headphones, listening to The Mars Volta, AND I COULD STILL HEAR THAT ****.

I told my friend this and this was her response:

"Your headphones don't block out the sound of awesomeness!!"

...*sigh*

When I was first getting my taste of decent music, I went onto Yahoo! Answers and discovered that the entire Rock & Pop section is filled with morons. Every time I posted a question, I got Black Veil Brides. Also, props for mentioning TMV. I recently got my friend into them, which is good because the only thing she listened to was Attack Attack before that, and she was convinced that CRABCOAR was a good pseudo-genre.

s_k 11-26-2010 06:54 PM

It's been quite a search to find a music forum where people actually talk about music ;).

jackhammer 11-26-2010 07:01 PM

Whilst I am eternally grateful for getting a job, my 32 Y.O boss has stated that my music is: awful, out dated, and nerdy. His fave music is top 40 junk and I played him this today:

At first he asked if it was Jimi Hendrix.... and then he said that it did nothing for him whatsoever and I was like what? it may not be your thing but surely you must like the groove at least. All i got was that I am living in the past :( so I then put on a Drum N Bass mix from this year and still no joy.

Narrow minded people really piss me off.

s_k 11-26-2010 07:04 PM

I am completely allergic to narrow minded people ;).

I must say this is not my kind of thing (I don't like the 'soul' feel to it), but it's like you say: You must AT LEAST like the groove. The groove is brilliant. And then the singing starts.
Back to Kenny Dorham :).
Thanks for the share, nevertheless!

And outdated: How can something good be outdated?
That's like saying: "Your Stradivarius is 350 years old, you should get one of those new electric Violins". Good stuff never goes old.

Have you noticed that bad music is called 'old' after like... five years?

Am I missing something? Since when did this become "old" music that makes people seem like they're living in the past?

And Jimi Hendrix? For reals???????

i wouldn't bee too sure about that, justin beiber as an entity is a gimmick

Stone Birds 11-26-2010 09:38 PM

a few artists people are trying to make me like that i still don't

everything by taylor swift sounds the same to me.

i actually like the instrumental but i hate her voice and lyrics.

music that people forced unto me that i'm starting to like:

(william fitzsimmons and justin vernon forced this on me)

(this video is really stupid though)

RVCA 11-26-2010 11:47 PM

My roommates are girls who are both in choir groups for church. They listen to a lot of T-Swift, Michael Buble, Carrie Underwood, Copeland, Matt Costa, etc. To be honest, I don't mind most of it, certainly not as bad as the other stuff in this thread.

Oh, and one doesn't like the Beatles and thinks they're overrated, even though I've caught her singing their music on several occasions.

Raust 11-26-2010 11:51 PM

One of my friends used to be really into Passion Pit. Not really a horrible band or anything, but if he plays Sleepyhead everytime you hang out with him it starts to get real old...real fast!

Ah yes. I really liked this song the first time i heard it. But now it hurts my brain. I still really like the video though.

TheFolkslave 11-27-2010 03:37 AM

Thank god all my friends like the same kind of music than I do so I don't have to listen to **** like Blood on the Dance Floor or anything. When we hang out we listen to GY!BE, Ef or some other good stuff.
But I know people who are really into metal and think the bands I listen to are "mainstream" and whimpy since I listen to post-rock and it has melodies and everyone knows melodies are only used in pop music. Makes me kinda laugh since the bands they listen to are some of the most generic, mainstream crap metal out there.

There's this one chick I know, whose always asking me for recommendations. Well, Here's a paraphrased commentary she gave of some of my favourite songs:

"What the **** is that? it's just a bunch of washing machine noise! I DON'T EVEN LIKE ROCK MUSIC IT'S ****!"

"Who the **** listens to music without words? what's the point? it's ****ty."

"This is terrible! Who would even want to listen to this? Where is the music?"

"How old am I? 60? I don't like music from the seventies! that dude has an ugly voice! Zoe, you have a terrible taste in music."

The most narrow-minded person in the world. The best part is, she's always coming back and asking me for "edgy" music.

...This statement is exactly it's why God built tire irons to bludgeon, and shovels to bury the bludgeoned.

TheFolkslave 11-27-2010 03:06 PM

Narrow minded people are annoying sometimes. I remember this one time few years ago when I was at my girlfriends house and I used her computer to listen to some post-rock. Both my girlfriend and her friend were like: "What is this ****? How can you listen to this? How can you enjoy it live when you can't jump around and dance to the music?". Needless to say I facepalmed the rest of the evening.

I've dealt with that many, many times. Instrumental music, gothic avant garde bands, and dream pop/shoegazey bands have to deal with that a lot. Because some people can only listen to music that's upbeat, under five minutes with lyrics to connect to. Personally, I think that people like that are missing out, badly. Personally I think people whose music never strays out of top-40 territory are lazy, and don't care anymore and can't be bothered to try something new.

s_k 11-27-2010 04:05 PM

These people see music as entertainment, just like a TV programme.
It sounds pleasant, it doesn't trigger their brains in anyway, so it's nice 'n easy.
It's usually very catchy and repetative and really annoying to my ears.

Until their favorite radio station shoves it down their throats, then they love it.

s_k 11-28-2010 11:50 AM

voluntarily having music force-fed is a bit scary, I think...

Queen Boo 12-11-2010 12:56 PM

I listen to mainstream radio because my friends and my sibs like it. A lot of the pop singles suck but I like Gaga, Katy Perry when she's not shooting sparks out of her breasts, and vintage Britney Spears. Ke$ha's my favorite. Her songs are completely substanceless and don't really pretend not to be but their always so fucking catchy and I love her voice. It's pretty, it sounds good even when its not loaded up with a bunch of effects. I like mainstream hip hop when it sounds clean, like the song "Bottoms Up" too. I even Justin Bieber's "Baby" and "I Whip my Hair Back and Forth".
I hate most of the music my mom listens to. I've gotten her into some really good 60s pop, The Clash, and The Black Keys and reintroduced her to the Stones but she listens to Billy Joel, who I don't care for at all, and this XM radio station that plays the shittiest music from the 70s.
She made me listen to this Seal song that she thinks is just the greatest. She put it on repeat like 20 times. I was ready to kill myself. Its just so lame.

Paedantic Basterd 12-11-2010 01:07 PM

Really, you like Kesha's voice? I think she's got a hideous voice.

Queen Boo 12-11-2010 01:17 PM

She's actually got a voice that would be pretty hard to hate. Its light but powerful and it doesn't really sound like she's trying. I think you might hate the vocal effects.

You really don't have to watch that, she sings without effects at the beginning so you'll see what I mean but the font and the background are very ugly.

ThePhanastasio 12-11-2010 01:17 PM

Dear God, these songs are horrible for the most part.

Lately, every time I've gone to a party at the house of my ex, she's been blaring this bull****:

I think it sounds kind of like Three Days Grace but maybe worse.
