Altough "Suspicious Minds" was written and originally (unsucessfully) recorded by Mark James, Dwight Yoakam does an outstanding job of it, more notable for me because of Pete Andersons (pretty sure thats him) guitar picking technique:

I seriously love the original, real cool music, but I connected with the ultra fast energy of the Jam's version raw and alive - brought me back to a bit of my youth.

i dig john maus' hey moon over molly nilsson's for the most part. both are great though. same with the raincoats' take on lola, and even pavement's take on the clean's oddity to a lesser extent

I am happy that one person who made Lady Gaga look like garbage which is generally how I feel about Gaga (though she got ASSSSSSSSSSS). One lady artist from Israel made a better version of this song. Check it out here.

:D Definitely Bad Company by Five Finger Death Punch. Much better than the original.

Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley

Nirvana's The Man Who Sold The World originally by David Bowie is such a decent cover.

The OFFSPRING's O.C. Life is better than the original one.

Young the Giant's cover of R. Kelly's Ignition sounds rad.

T.I's whatever you like cover is nice but I forgot the chick's name though.

The 1975 covered What Makes You Beautiful. There's no competition to beat the original, cos the original is rubbish. The 1975 give it meaning and soul. It is one of the best covered I've ever heard.

Are you a big fan of The 1975 then?

Tristesse 11-02-2013 03:41 PM

I love Glen Campbell's version of Green Day's 'Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)'. While I expect pretty much everyone will disagree with me, I think it's better than the original.

Not a lot of MBV fans know of this cover, it's on a really good comp of Wire covers from various 80s/90s titans of alt-rock and indie. I finally found it about month ago, secondhand, for 15$. I've been looking for almost 2 years now. Great track to begin with but I think MBV really made it their own and do it better than Wire:shycouch:

No ****, I'm pretty sure they're all I post about. No other artist compares to them. Trust me though, listen to the covers.

No disrespect to Marvin Gaye, but this is one hell of a fine cover. Nearly 11 minutes of straight up grooving.

CCR - "I Heard it Through the Grapevine"

Also, I really love the Shirelles (who doesn't love 60s girl groups?) but this cover is so groovy, and the vocals are incredible.

Smith - "Baby, It's You"

Love Creedence and this song. They were the 2nd concert I ever saw, in '71 (first was embarrassingly Iron Butterfly in'70)

I love Iron Butterfly; they were groovy. I could probably listen to you for ages, talking about the concerts you've been to. I'm so jealous of people in your age range, it's such a bummer being 24 and all your heroes are dying.

I was never a big Wonder Years fan, but I've always liked this one better than the bugs.

Dont know if it's been mentioned, but Dave Matthews version of "Long Black Veil" (Johnny Cash tune) is phenomenal. Still sends chills down my spine.

Daniel johnston covering 'I will' from the beatles..

i prefer this version because it's more raw and stripped down than the original version

Daniel's childlike vocals for me make the song more genuine and sincere.

I don't think this is better than the original, but it's a very interesting cover because Dolly Parton, who everyone knows wrote and sang the original, appears on it as a backup singer:

chris_mills 11-13-2013 01:59 PM

Okay, I have three songs, all equally sensational. (Some cover two songs at once!!!)

Say My Name / Cry Me A River - The Neighbourhood

The Neighbourhood cover 'Say My Name' (originally by Destiny's Child), and towards the end add a bit of 'Cry Me A River' (originally by Justin Timberlake)

Wicked Game - London Grammar

A nice, calm yet passionate cover from London Grammar who cover 'Wicked Game' (originally by Chris Isaak). Hannah Reid's voice is just so good.

No Angels - Bastille feat. Ella Eyre

Don't know if this is technically a cover because it's pretty much a new song but oh well. Bastille and Ella cover the lyrics of 'No Scrubs' (originally by TLC), over the backing of 'Angels' (originally by The XX). The song also features quotes from the film 'Psycho' which is quite cool and adds another edge to the track.

Charlemagne 11-14-2013 08:12 PM

Shearwater did a whole covers album, Fellow Travelers and every song on there is just wonderful.

Although I really like this song, I think this cover is just as good, if not better. (It's only missing the piercing scream)

Plankton 12-13-2013 08:42 AM

Maybe not better to a Slayer fanatic, but pretty damn close. The solo is phenomenal.

Jimi Hendrix, All along the watchtower

MackAttack 12-14-2013 02:33 PM

Nirvana did some pretty brilliant covers when they did Unplugged, alot of them I'd say were better than the originals.

Steve Earle does an awesome cover that is what Johnny Cash's Devil's Right Hand should have been all along. Social Distortion also does an awesome version of Ring of Fire.

On the topic of Johnny Cash his cover of Hurt by NIN is really something.

Tristesse 12-14-2013 05:28 PM

This cover is way better
