the most common musical statement i hear that always makes my head implode - Jimi Hendrix had giant / unnatural hands that's why he could play the way he does...

because there sure as hell wasn't any racism left in the mid 60s with a black man blowing every other guitarist out there totally out of the water using what was originally sold as a 'country and western' guitar. no siree.... Jimi Hendrix was just a mutant....
You seriously think that's why people say that?

Oh, and he did have long fingers...

i posted this on a friend's wall

she said "WTF was that?"
i asked "Did you listen to the lyrics"
"No"
"Then you didn't really listen to it"
"It's weird"
"You could've just read the lyrics in the chorus"
"I was distracted by the flower"
"Just listen to the lyrics, that's why i posted this"
"No, i'm afraid"
"..."
"Why do you listen to music nobody else listens to"
"..."

I come here with a couple good ones. A couple weeks ago, I had family from out of town visit.

Cousin: Can I see your Ipod?
Me: Sure.
Cousin: *after searching for a while* Why do you have Beethoven on here? Isn't he an opera singer or something?

And also, somehow me and my friend got on the subject of Eminem earlier today.

Him: Yeah, well, they're pretty famous.
Me: "They?"
Him: Yeah, Eminem.
Me: Um... *not exactly sure what to say* Eminem is a guy, not a band.
Him: I'm pretty sure it's a band.
Me: No, Eminem is a rapper. Believe me. Believe me
Him: It's a band.
Me: His real name is Marshall Mathers. He's a person. Believe me. I'm sure.
*this goes on for a while*
*friend sits down next to us*
Me: Oh hey. Uh... listen, man. Eminem is a rapper, right? Not a band?
Friend2: Yeah... why?

And in my head, I'm like "Because we just got into a really stupid argument."

Watch any metal documentary that shows how hardcore metalheads behaved in the 80s.

Terence Hill, as recently confirmed during an interview to an Italian TV talk-show, was offered the role but rejected it because he considered it "too violent". Dustin Hoffman and John Travolta declined the role for the same reason. When Al Pacino was considered for the role of John Rambo, he turned it down when his request that Rambo be more of a madman was rejected.
Al Pacino = God

yeah that's exactly why i think that line perpetuates itself. the musical contemporaries of Hendrix's day had to come up with some justification for being an order of magnitude behind Jimi and most people never really bothered to look into it further.

if you actually learned how to play his music you'd notice that he used very traditional chord shapes as the base for most of his songs. the ONE thing he did differently than most was using his thumb to fret the low E which in turn freed up dexterity in his fingers to allow more embellishments and accents to his rhythm playing. that's less about hand size and more about 'improper' form and endless practice.

it's not like he was pulling 9 fret stretches or anything. the widest stretches on any Hendrix tune are no wider than any 12 bar blues.

the man was not a mutant he did not have giant hands. what he did do was never ever stop playing his instrument - he took his guitar to bed FIRST and women SECOND. that's why he played the way he did.

Lots of self-taught guitarists use their thumb to fret the low e string, especially for bar chords. Pretty sure Clapton does it alot, I know he does for the acoustic version of Layla

So anyway, here's mine. I'm riding shotgun with this girl. She puts it on an absolutely horrendous pop-country station so I start looking through the CD's in the car. I find a couple ****ty rap CDs (T.I. I think) and a whole lot of ****ty country, i.e. Rascall Flats, Big & Rich, etc. Finally stumble across a Bob Dylan greatest hits CD
Me: Hey do you mind if we listen to this CD? This other stuff isn't really my cup of tea
Her: Ugh. Can you pick a different one? My friend gave me that to listen to, its not mine. Its just a ****ty version of country, you would hate it if you don't like this.
Me: (stunned at this point but trying to be polite) I've heard his music before, I actually like it. Maybe you just haven't given it a chance. (I put it on "Positively 4th Street." Bob gets through "you got a lot of nerve..." and she ejects the cd)
Her: Wow, its worse than I remembered. You know, you shouldn't be so open about your tastes if your gonna listen to such weird music. Girls will think your creepy if you try to play stuff like that around them

Simple high school economics. She had something (a vagina that I was allowed access too on occasion) that was in very short supply and very high demand
