Iv listened to some real **** in trade for vagina. Sometimes you have no choice. Until I am playing stadiums and making millions compromises will have to be made.

Hit the nail on the head about the v-card haha. And that's another thing about my generation, it seems like guys get into classic rock (not 'classic rock radio' **** per se) much earlier than girls and tend to get more into it. Not that there aren't exceptions. But most 16 your old white guys today will have a working knowledge of some classic rock groups even if they aren't huge fans, where as girls are more into top 100 stuff and rap. Girls get more into 'serious' music in college. Obviously not the rule but a trend i've observed growing up in the last few years.

Also, whats the big deal about vinyl? I'm too young to even remember 8-track really, so I've never had a record player lying around and I'd have to shell out about $100 to be able to get one. Is the sound quality any better, or is it merely nostalgia about it being the way you grew up listening to it, or because it is the "original" medium that it was recorded for or some such sentimental reason.

Not the case here. I have never noticed any difference in that. My girlfriends all have had an average to good music taste as long as I've known them (which is, in most cases, from 14-16 years old till now).

Well I prefer the sound to the sound of a CD. Ofcourse it has some background noise. But if you take care of your records there shouldn't be any crackle or pop. Furthermore the 'loudness war' problem of the last ten years usually isn't there when you buy a record. A record that's been limited to the brim sounds so bad that it just won't sell. So most records actually have a better mix to start with.

I'm not saying digital can't sound good. Just not the kind of digital (16 bits 44.1khz) that they put on a CD. I have a lot of CD's. About 350 to 400. But I usually buy them second hand after I buy the record. I buy them because then I don't have to get up every 22 minutes.

And too old for vinyl?
I bought for a hundred dollars on new vinyl yesterday. It's not dead man. It's alive and kicking.

I also bought a brand new reel to reel tape that arrived today.
There's still a lot of love for analog media, fortunately.
And as far as vinyl goes, about 50% of true audiophiles prefers vinyl, about 50% prefers CD's. So I guess it's a question of taste.

I myself prefer tapedecks, as they're the only medium that can perfectly duplicate the sound of a CD ànd a vinyl record.

hell i'm 34 and i can't stand Dylan (not gonna deny his influence or ability though, just doesn't do it for my ears).

as for 8-tracks i remember having one way back in the day. not at all the same as vinyl. with an actual vinyl record you can turn on your turntable and turn OFF the speakers and still hear the music if you lean in close. 8-tracks were a whole different technology, the tapes were large (about the size of an average portable cd player) with a whole 4 tracks per side. the cool thing i remember about it was that you could just hit a button a skip tracks. didn't have to fast forward or rewind like a typical cassette.

i clearly remember cold-cutting some Sesame Street classics back in '79 on my big blue player hehehe

If you look for someone with a nice sounding voice, don't look for dylan ;D.
But then I like Tom Waits and Neil Young too, so yeah...

The tape is in the cassette in one continuous loop. There's a little piece of metal foil at the end of the loop that tells the machine to switch to the next pair of tracks Rewind would make an awful mess .
You can't skip an actual musical track, you can just choose a different pair of tracks. There's 8 tracks on the 8-track. They're in pairs. One for the lefst channel, one for the right channel.
8-tracks have just one side. They can carry up to 88 minutes of music and they sound... Well... pretty afwul. When my player gets back from repair I can make a sample for you

As far as the recording technology goes, it works just the same as an open reel deck or a cassette recorder. It's just a tape, exactly the same with as an home-tapedeck (1/4"). The back is extra slippery as the tape is actually pulled out of the middle of the reel (I can't believe it works either ;D). The tape that has been played is added to the outside of the reel. It's the strangest system ever.
The tape contains little parts of iron that are arranged by a magnetic head. depending on how these parts are arranged, you hear the music.
The same thing still happens on harddisks, only a lot faster and divided into sectors.


Found a video I made of a (cheap) 8-track player last year.
I made this for a friend. He got this player and is now repairing My Akai 8-track recorder to pay for this.

Bear in mind this incident happened a number of years ago when I was in the 11th grade. If you can truthfully say that as a 16 year old male you would have turned down sex over someone's music taste, then you're either a mormon, take music too seriously, or are a better man than I.

I have no regrets. At least not about this.
