That's brilliant, I have met a few people who don't really get the bass. Usually the ask if it's just a guitar for beginners.

That reminds me, I used to have a friend who thought the double bass was just a fancy electric bass.

Um no, not the ****ty kind!

In my experience, many non-rock music fans simply assume that rock = nickelback, seether, creed, staind etc. etc. etc.
Hell yeah. I hate stuff like that. Also:

Me: "I'm gonna get that Madness album today"
Mate: "Ain't they that band from the 80's?"
Me: "Yeah that's it."
Mate: Why do you like them? They're old man"
Me: . . . . (stabs mate in the eye with a rusty spoon).

I had a friend who saw my bass and was like "I didn't know you played guitar!"
"I do... but that's not it."

I also had a teacher who thought that a "rhythm guitar" was a bass. That was halarious

"Do you play lead or rhythm guitar"
"Depends on the song."
"So, you're switching between two parts?"
"Yes. I switch between lead and rhythm guitar depending on who wants to play what and if the song I'm doing even has a rhythm part. A lot of bands don't even have two guitars though."
"Wait, I'm confused. So you play rhythm guitar?"
"No. I switch depending on the song."
"You switch between two instruments?"
"What?"
"I thought you said you switched between lead and rhythm guitar."
"Do you even know what a rhythm guitar is?"
"Yeah, it's that low guitar."
"I think you're thinking of a bass."
"No. I'm not thinking of a bass."
"I'm sure you are."
*this goes on until we're both confused*
Teacher: "Uh... *plays air bass* *sings in lowest register* BUM BUM BUM BUM BUM BUM BUM BUM"
*facepalm* "Okay, quick music lesson *explains*"

Classmate: why is that guitar so tiny?
Me: what?
Classmate: your guitar it's so tiny, and it only has 4 strings, that's weird.
Me: don't you listen to Jason Mraz?
Classmate: yes, he's one of my favorite musician, why?
Me: ...

Me: "I like finding obscure albums."
Mom: "Why would you want to listen to failed albums?"

Friend: "Panic at the disco's last album was really close to being like the best thing any 'alternative' band has ever put out. But it seemed like they focused too much on trying to make the lyrics poetic."

Same Friend: "Alternative rock sucks. It's not alternative to anything."
Me: "Right, well when it first emerged it was the alternative to the mainstream at the time. So it was underground for a while until..."
Same Friend: "You can't have a mainstream and an underground. It doesn't work like that."

Me: "I didn't really like that music book you gave me. It didn't even touch on any of the rock music in the 90s."
Same Friend: "That's because the rock music in the 90s was the same as it was in the 80s."
Me: "uh... what about the whole, you know - alternative rock phenomenon?"
Same Friend: "Rock music was already around, so you can't have a phenomenon of something that's already been around! The same 4 piece rock band set up."
Me: "Yeah, but the style had changed and become the most popular form of rock music."
Same Friend: "There was no 'alternative rock' phenomenon. A phenomenon can only take place if it's something new."

My thoughts: "Why do I bother putting up with you?"
