Does a Band's Popularity Affect Your Taste?

my main gripe with most Top 40 songs are that they sound like something I can churn out in 15 minutes with the proper tools and singer

Really? I think they usually sound like a lot of time and effort was put into producing them even when they suck. That's one thing you can say about pop music, it virtually never sounds raw or uncalculated.

only from a technological POV - the songs themselves are pretty basic - i can write pretty catchy songs - hence my caveat "with the proper tools"

If I like how it sounds, I like how it sounds... popularity is not a factor.

It seems that, after a while, bands that become popular also become dull... in that case, I might stop following them, but even that's based on their sound, rather than popularity.

In some kind of twisted way it affects my taste. I get pleasure out of looking for obscure artists that I've never heard of, but it's not like I have anything against popular music, it's just sort of a pastime I guess. So yeah, it affects my taste.

I think that when a band becomes popular, it does change my taste for them. That doesn't mean I wont like them anymore, but... what's that saying? "reality is 36/42nds perception" (or something). A really great band/artist/album is going to be great no matter how many people hear it. And for most musicians having more people hearing their music is a goal.

This isn't always the case, but:

A somewhat obscure or unheard of band is like the clearing in the forest where there's a waterfall and a great view, and it's a bit of a hike, but no one really knows about it except you.

When that band becomes popular, sometimes it feels like a bunch of fat american families are rolling in and setting up souvenir booths and making all kinds of noise and garbage and you can't see the view and someone's trying to sell you a tour.

I'm definitely wrong about this. But possibly not often if there's a chance I'm right.

Heh. That's really weird, I used to use almost this exact same metaphor to describe my feelings about bands I liked becoming popular, minus ascribing a particular nationality to the intruders.
