How different of a person would you be without music?

How would your life be different if you weren't ever into some of the artists you have been into?

For me, I don't think I would have gone through phases where I wanted to be things I surely wasn't and probably be more of a snob.

The Virgin 03-21-2011 01:20 AM

i grew up listening to Britney Spears. I honestly believe she contributed something to my homosexuality. But had I idolized Aerosmith or Nirvana than her, I think i would be the exact opposite of what I am right now.

Howard the Duck 03-21-2011 01:37 AM

if I hadn't listened to the John Peel Show on the BBC World Service when I was a teenager, I probably wouldn't listen to half of the music I do today

ThePhanastasio 03-21-2011 01:44 AM

If it weren't for my first loves in music that weren't at all influenced by my parents' listening habits - Jewel, Savage Garden, and Blues Traveler - I really don't know where I'd be today. I went through phases of awful music, but these were the bands I most loved when all of my other peers were mad for Hanson, Backstreet Boys, and all of that.

Jewel has definitely evolved my taste into a lot of the more acoustic singer-songwriter-y stuff I like now, a la The Mountain Goats, Elliott Smith, Bright Eyes, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, and things of that nature.

Savage Garden led me to artists like Radiohead, which has in turn led me to be turned onto a lot of indie and alternative stuff.

And Blues Traveler really helped me gradually get into improvisational music and superb instrumentation; if I'd never loved Blues Traveler as a kid, I can almost guarantee I'd not be into bands like Phish...

And without Jewel AND Blues Traveler, I doubt I would have really gotten into The Grateful Dead.

So really, I can trace most of the music (if not all) that I listen to today back to those three acts. Without them, God knows what I'd be listening to.

Scarlett O'Hara 03-21-2011 02:04 AM

Savage Garden are awesome!

Thom Yorke 03-21-2011 02:05 AM

I'm not sure. I consider music my main hobby and not a definition of who I am. Then again I do listen to it to relax, to help me study, as a common bond with many friends, etc. so maybe it has had a huge effect on me. Guess I'll never really know, and I don't want to know.

Howard the Duck 03-21-2011 02:05 AM

i wouldn't even be listening to English music if my dad weren't blasting the Beatles and the Rolling Stones when I was a baby

TockTockTock 03-21-2011 04:54 AM

Good question... No idea. I guess I would be into books more (I'm already an avid reader as it is). I'd be pretty much the same, except I wouldn't annoy people with my excessive talking about music.

Scarlett O'Hara 03-21-2011 04:56 AM

In all seriousness, I'd be dead. Music got me through some dark times. Without it I wouldn't of made it through. It's what keeps me alive and passionate today. Even if I can only fantasize about being a singer it's still enough to keep me ticking.

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 03-21-2011 08:11 AM

videogames would be my life... then again, if they didn't have music...

Suicide.

Howard the Duck 03-21-2011 08:14 AM

if they didn't have music, I'd make my own

This, except the singer part. I'm too shy to sing in public.
For the most part, I don't think I'd be as well developed as a person if I hadn't got into punk. It taught me it was okay to be weird, and to take pride in my weirdness.

Howard the Duck 03-21-2011 08:19 AM

seriously, I'd be reading way too much philosophy and Existential poetry if there were no music and spend most of my life contemplating my navel

Sansa Stark 03-21-2011 08:21 AM

Il Duce: best member 2k11

s_k 03-21-2011 08:36 AM

Haha, yeah, I'm a fan of Il Douchebag too. He's probably the strangest person I ever liked, but he's a great guy.

Eitherway, I can't say what my life would have been like without music as I have never been without music. But I know that if I had to be without music now, I'd probably be dead within half a year.

you're not the first calling me that

although the other person called me "Ill Douchebag"

Stone Birds 03-21-2011 11:49 AM

i would not be a person. but seriously i'm guessing this question is basically about being def and i'd probably be a completely different person, i'd probably be considered mentally retarded because i'm guessing if i were def asperger's would takeover completely that's my theory.

Queen Boo 03-21-2011 02:01 PM

Its something that I've been drawn to since I was a baby so I can't really say. I've always been really attracted to music, not even just the sound but the scenes and the subcultures. I can't picture life without it but I think I'd be really, really boring and ordinary.

Oh wait...

Besides, if music didn't exist, Marvin Gaye wouldn't exist, which means the world's population would probably be half of what it is now and most of us would've never been born into a world where we had to worry about the lack of sound-oriented methods of self-expression anyway.

I'm not asking what the world would be like without music. More so i'm asking what you as a person would be like if you didn't listen to some of the music you have listened to over the years.

I can reflect on the impact punk music had on my life and without it I may have a different outlook on life and such.

clutnuckle 03-21-2011 02:54 PM

Would probably be in my basement reading about painting.

I'd be alot more ignorant of stuff that happens in the world. So much of the stuff I know has either been learned through music, or has been researched as a result of it being mentioned in a song. Its important that artists realise that they do have a platform to reach the masses, and that they should use that platform to bring certain issues to people's attention.

I'd not dance around as much as I do as well, which honestly I'd hate. I'm not a professional dancer, I've not taken lessons or anything... but if I hear a song I like that has a good rhythm to it, you can believe I'll be getting up and dancing around regardless of drunkness.

Alfred 03-21-2011 07:41 PM

Probably wouldn't appreciate things that are odd or different (as much) had I not got into punk at a young age.

s_k 03-21-2011 07:53 PM

I think music drew me right into the arms of the right people.
And they provided me with the right music.
I would be an entirely different person without music.

chipper 03-21-2011 08:06 PM

Just curious, why did you use that example?

Satan probably won't be as popular also

You know that Kurt spray painted "God is gay" onto the side of a bank and I know that Kurt spray painted "God is gay" onto the side of a bank but I don't think The Virgin does. Its just a catch all for stereotypical 1990s teenage boy music.

GeddyBass2112 03-22-2011 10:50 AM

I seriously cannot imagine a life without music. SOme of my first memories are of songs I listened to as a kid- including the first song I ever remember hearing, Blue Monday by New Order. I grew up buying CD singles with my pocket money from Woolworths each week.

I'd likely be dead too, if I didn't myself play music (bass guitar). It helped me when I was feeling so lonely and miserable I wanted to kill myself- my bass wasn't going to insult or hurt me, it could be a channel for my frustrations.

solsupreme 03-23-2011 12:48 AM

i would be an odd person, with a sever lack of creativity

I do not want to find out, that is for sure! Music has been a big part of my life since I was born. My dad plays the guitar, parents put me in piano lessons at a young age, was in band in middle and high school. Then listening to music has always been big for me. I listen to just about every kind, listen at work, in the car, while doing homework, while out with friends, while working out...so pretty much all the time! Lets just say I would be more than lost without music!

So did I. And then I discovered that Nirvana was better music.
I didn't go from gay to straight, I just got a better taste in music :D.

holly984 03-23-2011 04:54 PM

I don't know if I'd go as far to say that I'd be a 'different' person without music. However, perhaps I'm interpreting this too literally, lol (i.e, a different personality, interests, life course, etc).

I most definitely associate certain phases of my life with different artists, though. And of course a particular song can bring a flood of memories back. Same with songs that I remember speaking exactly what I was feeling at the time. So...if I can say anything at all with absolutely certainty, it's that I simply wouldn't want to imagine my life without music. :)

IWP 03-23-2011 04:55 PM

I'd be a boring vegetable without music.

s_k 03-23-2011 04:56 PM

Music certainly made me choose certain locations/friends. The 'alternative' scene, if you know what I mean. So different music definitely would have changed the way my life would have worked out.

I went through musical periods too. Altough I have the feeling that I'm now adding music to my taste, not changing my preferences
