Sometimes death metal breaches genres and actually sounds good. In fact, some of the best modern metal bands are death metal bands:
Agalloch Opeth Meshuggah Anathema (it's a stretch, but w/e) If 90% of death metal is shit, there's still other outstanding metal genres that I hate even more. Black metal is completely awful, with some of the most gruesome lyrics ever.

I think in basically any genre you can find some good but some overall bad genres for me would be (listed in ascending order of terribleness):
nu-metal smooth jazz contemporary christian urban contemporary gospel |

Early Anathema was death metal. Opeth has always been death metal. Meshuggah is a fusion of death, thrash, and progressive metals. And Agalloch incorporates a lot of death metal elements, though they are rarely labeled as such.

Are you counting doom death as being closer to doom or death metal on the metal spectrum? I've always viewed it as more doomy so that could explain the disagreement on Anathema. Opeth have often times used death metal and Meshuggah are very much technical death metal. Agalloch has no death metal elements what so ever. A bit of black metal, but no death metal.

Admittedly The Mantle as well as the bulk of their work is significantly mired in post-rock and acoustic contributions, but the 2006 album showcased a heavier side to the band, utilizing thrash riffs and much faster time signatures than they displayed on any other album.
