Worst Hit Songs by Artists You Like

I have a good idea - name hit songs you dislike by artists whose music you usually like. From the period you like them. (Not, for example 5 years after you stopped buying the artist's music.) Give some reasons, please.

Zer0 09-04-2011 06:48 PM

Lemonheads - Mrs Robinson. Even Evan Dando doesn't know what he was thinking.

Necromancer 09-04-2011 07:08 PM

I always liked Def Leppard but Elliot's England Rocks "sucks"!

Nothing personal of course.:p:

sopsych 09-04-2011 10:08 PM

Yeah, that does suck, although technically it's not Def Leppard, and I don't dislike any of the hits from the band's American peak. (That band was great and still is good.)

I've thought of a few examples for me: "Mysterious Ways," by U2 (before the band's slow decline) and "Sledgehammer," by far Peter Gabriel's worst hit song. I never enjoy that one - it's repetitive, doesn't make any sense, and (maybe another reason) has no noticeable guitar. Also, Robert Plant "Tall Cool One" - uggh, remixed Zeppelin, I generally dislike that band, but used to love him solo.

Mysterious Ways is a good/worst pick. I like about everything Peter Gabriel did, although I agree how overplayed Sledgehammer is. I also liked Robert Plants solo work:) and Led Zeppelin as well.

"Pour Some Sugar On Me" is a most irritating hit by Def Leopard.:o:

Howard the Duck 09-05-2011 08:34 AM

Phil Collins' Sussudio is beyond horrible (he copied Prince's 1999 drumtrack wholesale)

and i do like Phil solo at any other time

I agree, though I wouldn't say I dislike all of it.

Now that you mention Phil Collins, he was supposed to be on my list for "I Cannot Believe It's True." Horn-based with repetitive, silly lyrics. It charted okay, but rightfully has been forgotten.

Also, Van Halen's "Hot for Teacher," because it has dumb lyrics and I don't like the main riff and stop-and-go pacing. Even the guitar solo doesn't move me for some reason.

Hey I love Van Halens "Hot For Teacher"

My guess was if they could do it right with "Luka" off Lick (1989) then they could do it with "Mrs. Robinson" a few years later.

I like it lol.

For me, I'd have to say 2Pac's 'Brenda's got a baby', just annoys me greatly.

Also, I'm ashamed to admitting I liked Linkin Park, after some of the stuff they've produced in the last few years.

The Final Track 09-05-2011 12:38 PM

Coldplay - Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall

GuitarBizarre 09-05-2011 01:39 PM

Hide And Seek - Imogen Heap.

Of all the ****ing awesome songs she's written, why did THAT ONE have to make it huge?

YorkeDaddy 09-05-2011 02:09 PM

I absolutely hate Creep by Radiohead.

Thom Yorke 09-06-2011 01:00 PM

Anyone Can Play Guitar isn't too great either.

Howard the Duck 09-06-2011 08:07 PM

Numb - Jay-Z and Linkin Park

the absolute worst of the worst from two acts I somewhat like

Hot for Teacher is great D:

Howard the Duck 09-06-2011 09:14 PM

i really only don't like Panama

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 09-06-2011 11:23 PM

Must have been amazing for it's time, but has aged poorly. In a world where metal songs with rapped verses are done to death, feels one dimensional, poorly aged, and wholly unspectacular.

TheNiceGuy 09-07-2011 01:01 AM

Angel Eyes by Roxy Music. Yucky, generic disco sludge. Ugh

the Father and the Son?

where's the Holy Ghost?

The Rolling Stones - Brown Sugar
Tom Waits - Downtown Train
Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah (the original album version from 1984; he has made many wonderful live performances of the song though)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps (seriously, why is it that popular? Literally every other song by them is better)
Bob Dylan - Knockin' on Heaven's Door

I'm with you, song sucks. Though I guess I'm not a big Van Halen fan in the first place.

I will second this and say it and Blind Love are the cardinal reasons why I prefer Swordfishtrombones to Rain Dogs.

I mostly like this track live, but I absolutely detest the studio version.

...but I totally agree with this. He has a ton of great songs, why so many musicians choose to cover this one I'll never understand. It doesn't even have very good lyrics.

I disagree with you on this. His version definitely isn't the best, but some of the covers are great. And I like the lyrics.

bob. 09-10-2011 10:57 AM

i have to agree with all that is being said about Leonard Cohen.....i just don't see how such a simple song is renowned as his masterpiece....although i must say it had my eyes flooding when i saw him perform it live :)

All Apologies by Nirvana.....hate does not even begin to express how i feel about that song....and really that whole Unplugged album

Sansa Stark 09-10-2011 11:25 AM

The Boy with the Thorn In His Side & Cemetry Gates - The Smiths

I love the Smiths, I really do, as evidenced by my tattoos and my avatar, but really I cannot stand these songs and I think they are terrible.

though if those count as hits idk

Should I Stay or Should I Go & Rock the Casbah are notable too. Should I Stay is really crap, Rock the Casbah less so but in comparison the rest of Combat Rock (ie Know Your Rights, Car Jamming, or Overpowered by Funk) they're embarassing

'The Boy With The Thorn In His Side' is probably the weakest song on The Queen Is Dead but 'Cemetry Gates' is classic. I love Johnny's guitar work and the lyrics are brilliantly well-done.

Gimme Shelter - The Rolling Stones

i really hate this song

Heh. That's actually one of my favorite Stones songs! The Sisters of Mercy cover of it is pretty great too, arguably even better better than the original.

Kaitlynn 09-10-2011 12:50 PM

Lil Wayne - How to Love
For some reason I hate it when he does R&B

:bonkhead:

That is probably my favourite Stones song. Either that one or "Far Away Eyes".

Their worst hit song has to be "Tumbling Dice". An embarrassment to Exile on Main Street, really.

lucifer_sam 09-10-2011 11:04 PM

Ah, shit. I forgot the most obvious transgressors...

Blur - Song 2
Oasis - Wonderwall
...and pretty much every other Britpop single that's broken the American top 40.

The Final Track 09-11-2011 02:14 AM

I don't hate it, but

The Beatles - Hey Jude

Cemetry Gates is lovely in my eyes. The lyrics have a sweet poetry-like feel, and as Zer0 said, Marr's guitar work is very effective working around the lyrics.

Howard the Duck 09-11-2011 06:03 AM

"Oh Yeah!" by Yello also

totally over-used and too much of a novelty song, and the only song they're known for

and i totally adore Yello
