I bought that one after it was released from the vaults in the 90s. I had heard all kinds crazy stuff about it like it was a forerunner of gangsta rap and whatnot. Needless to say I was really disappointed. It's been years and years since I've listened to it (I have it on cassette if that's any indication) so maybe I should go back and give it another chance.

Yeah...and hopefully without the expectation that it was a "forerunner of gangsta rap" (??)

I liked his casually misogynistic method of courtship in that film, making her take off her clothes before shoving her in a cold lake and pretending to drive off. But that just made her want him more...

What was the name of that rival group? They brought the funk

you can hear alot of hip-hop in Prince actually. His sheer eclecticism the main draw

I never understood that either. Presumably the person who wrote that review was talking about "Bob George".

There's a vast, vast gulf that lies between having some of elements of hip-hop in your music, and being a "forerunner to gangsta rap".

Ok so I'm just starting to get interested in Prince but havent heard him perform many songs. I love When Doves Cry performed by Patti Smith, When you were Mine by Tegan and Sara but I cant see Princes originals on You Tube...well I CAN see them just can't hear them.

Why's that?

he performs the songs

right. My question to the Prince lovers of MB - which albums are really worth checking NOT including Purple Rain or Sign O' The Times?
