Default not to put a damper on your buckethead enthusiasm

In the recent Rolling Stone list of the 100 best guitarists, Jimi ranked #1, Buckethead didn't make the list. It was a pretty good list, with blues, jazz, folk and metal all represented.

But Rolling Stone mag, often doesn`t take emotion into account.

That was a nasty list in my opinion. They knew their stuff with purple like Tom Verlaine, but Cobain in the top 30? Seems like a money spinner to me.

If they end up with a list where the average Joe Bloggs hasn`t heard of anybody its not good business for the music industry, but if they put a sprinkling of very well known artists in, the list instantly has appeal without really detracting from the real aim of the list. I actually really like Kurt Cobain as a guitarist btw.

Bit predictable though. Hendrix at the top? Kobe above Brian May? As long as it isn't taken seriously, fine with me!

Rolling Stone only starts to get a credibility problem when they start getting nostalgic. And thats their biggest problem. Jimi is not the best guitarist ever by any measure. I hate to keep bagging on him but what did he do that was so impressive?

I'd guess for Rolling Stone the one thing that makes him #1 forever in their eyes is his "Star Spangled Banner" at Woodstock. The subtext of that gives RS readers orgasms to this day. Meanwhile, BH's interpolation of Somewhere over the Rainbow doesn't have quite the same "we're all reliving the sexual revolution, man!" feel. Therefore, its apparently not as good. Know what, I take it back, Rolling Stone sucks.

But don`t you think nostalgia plays a huge part in rock? Being a great artist in my opinion, doesn`t just mean how great you play your instrument or even how innovative you are, but also how you flaunt it, legends are born from moments like Woodstock.

When I think of the very best guitarists I think of Hendrix, Page and Blackmore because they knew how to strut their stuff and write great music besides playing the guitar. I find people like Satriani, Vai and Malmsteen despite their virtuosity with the guitar about as exciting as listening to a Nickelback record.

Out of interest, who would you say was the best guitarist ever?

If thats the case, why isn't Robbie Robertson in the Top 5? or Justin Hawkins in the Top 20?

The above post was my categorization of what a great guitarist is, Rolling Stone have different parameters on how they classify a great guitarist. Robbie Robertson was an outstanding guitarist, but unless you`re really into music not too many people will remember who the Band were, had he been in the Rolling Stones, well he`d probably be a lot higher on their list.
