If I used musical taste as a basis for peer-friends, I would have two friends.

And that's why I have two friends.

This question actually came up yesterday. I was kind of surprised but I blurted out "mostly folk and country." The asker seemed to accept this so I stopped myself from saying anything else. My favorite two artists are folk and country but my tastes extend way beyond that.

Conversation usually goes something like this;

them: What sort of music do you like?

me: I like pretty much anything, I have pretty varied tastes.

them: Oh have you heard of/do you like <insert band that makes me want to jam rusty screwdriver in ear>

me: <pained silence while I try to figure out how to avoid offending them>

"I've been listening to a bit of metal lately"

and then they give me a raised eyebrow and invariably think less of me as a person as they walk away

no, say "I've been listening to a lot of power metal lately"

then see their reaction

/signed with Unicr0n's and Conan's points. It's nice to have the options, and it's nice to have a collection in case the internet dies. Just in case.

Most people don't ask me that question - instead, I'm usually the one asking the question. Unfortunately, most of the time it's "I listen to everything" which I absolutely HATE as an answer because it tells me nothing and it's so cliche.
