Default Calling America ---- help needed

I'm planning to start running a new section soon in my journal, which would feature bands from each state in the USA, going state by state, either alphabetically or geographically, haven't decided which, and hopefully showcasing the best each state has.

To this end, as I'm an Irishman and have never been to the US, I'd appreciate input from anyone --- preferably American, but if you have sufficient information that's not vital --- to advise what bands are in each state. I'd be looking both at well-known established bands and younger, even unsigned ones, the only criterion being that there must be at least one YouTube of them available, so I can feature them.

A brief bio, discography or any other information on the band would be helpful too. Doesn't matter what style, though my own preference is for rock/metal. I'd just like to get an overview of how the music scene is at the moment in the good old USA. Oh yeah, one other criterion: they must be still active.

So, any help? If you want to contribute, you can be mentioned as a/the source for that state in the journal entry when it's published.

Thanks for any assistance.

Sure, I'll help. I'm willing to bet there's going to be a real dearth of candidates in quite a few states though (I'm looking at you, North Dakota), and obviously an overabundance in others.

Janszoon, Johnny Lang is still active isn't he? And that's period the end on that one.

I remember very vividly participating in a little thing on here... something called "Favorite Band From Each State" or some such. This was late 2010/early 2011. I remember it so well because I ended up working on mine for 4-6 hours. But it is floating around here on MB somewhere, along with other people's suggestions. So Trollheart, find that thread!

you should do it in chronological order (that why you don't have to worry about Alaska and Hawaii till the very end)

so what exactly do you need sir?

Do you mean, in the order the states joined the Union? Sorry, not that well up on American history...

I'll have a look for that thread Mrd00d suggested, but basically I'm trying to see what each state has to offer in terms of music: new bands, old bands, unsigned bands, to give an overall flavour of music in the US state by state.

I know there are different genres active in different states, and many genres in each state, but more or less keeping it generally in the rock spectrum I'd just like to be able to feature, say, music from Wisconsin, and see what sort of music comes, or has come, out of there. Just an idea. I may do the same here, but obviously that would be county by county, possibly a tougher task...

So are you looking for a single representative band from each state (definitely a tough call for large, diverse states like California, New York, etc.) or are you looking for kind of a sampling from each state? If the latter is the case, then there are certain states that you'll really end up selling short by sticking to the "rock spectrum" (Louisiana comes to mind).

Trollheart, I would've said the best way for you to do this, was for you to pick a state and then everybody could provide you with a diversity of artists from that state and you could choose say the best 10 and do your entry on those ten bands. Once that was done you could then move to the next state. I'd imagine with some states like California you might have trouble keeping it under ten, in that case you could seperate it into 2 or 3 geographical sections. If I were doing this this is how I would do it. Also you need to be careful as quite often certain artists are from one state but formed the band in another state and so you need to decide the criteria on that as well.

Yeah, task is looking bigger all the time! Why didn't I start with Ireland? D'oh!

Okay then, what I'm looking at is not anything representative, certainly not one "best band", but an overall look at what sort of music is happening in each state. Kind of more interested in the newer bands, while perhaps referring back to certain bigger bands as examples (New Jersey, home of Springsteen and Bon Jovi/Seattle, whose biggest export was Nirvana, etc).

I'm in no hurry at all to start, or certainly complete this: it could run for months, maybe years (who's looking at the big picture? You are! Yes you are!), however long it takes.

And it doesn't have to be rock, though I really don't want to get bogged down in east coast rap or anything. No offence, but I'm just not into that sort of music and know very little about it anyway.
