About the only interesting thing out these days is the shitload of fantastic music being released constantly.

well said Janz. You and I may actually agree on something.

This thread on the whole is embarrassing and is eerily reminiscent of a retirement home with members clamouring for the return of a period of nostalgia they were too young to have actually experienced.

It's been said once but I'll repeat; there's now more music than ever, and a more diverse selection of it. In 2012, there's truly something for everyone and there's already been many sublime releases this year.

In my opinion, 2012 is the best year for music since 2011 and chances are 2013 will be better. All you need to do is actually look around for music a little instead of just saying 'oh my godz, lady gaga is so not the beatlez, wasn't like thiz in my time'

Actually, no.

Genres like prog, post-rock, indie, death metal, etc have actually been releasing great music and continue to. Testament and Anathema to name a few have released some pretty great albums. Rush, pg.lost, and others as well. I haven't heard a single hip-hop or electronica album released this year and I can still safely say that it has been a great year in music. Scratch that, great past two years.

Its just a matter of opinion, thats all. If you like each year of music more than the last, that's great, but I have a hard time believing that. There has to be a selection of artists that you hold near and dear, and certain albums, therefore certain years.

Why do they have to be certain years? Surely when we're looking at years, the number of albums available becomes so broad that your favourite albums could look like a lightning bolt on a graph?

I can honestly say that there are so many albums I hold near and dear that it probably covers every year, or nearly every year, in which albums have been released.

All I was saying is that I doubt anyone really thinks music gets better and better every year because Im sure there are certain albums from certain time periods that stand out to you as some of the best. And i doubt something comes out every year that is going to dismount one of your favorite albums ever.

Music doesn't necessarily get better but the bands who release the albums that are better than the last certainly get credited for being a better band a year or so after the prior release. In that sense, I suppose you could say music does get better each year or two. But I would personally focus on the band and not music as a general term.

I may be wrong here, but I think the point manky was making was simply that each year is adding to the pile of good music, meaning there's more good music available than ever before. So 2013 is going to be even better than 2012 because you'll have all the amazing music that was available in 2012 plus a bunch of new music.

I argue that music (especially USA) was the best during the 1970s up the mid 2000s era.
