I'm guessing nobody listened to the song. I always found both bands equally depressing. I'm certain the emo/depressing stamp stems from Robert's look.

The Smiths. Can't say I favor The Cure too much. Also, I share my birthday with Morrissey, so that's a plus.

I like both bands. The Smiths thankfully stopped before they began to make bad music but I still prefer The Cure. Their (pre-90s) music means a lot more to me. Unlike the formulaic Smiths who wrote songs for the strange British disco-dancing market, The Cure offer a variety of sounds and their songs/albums are more pleasing overall. I'm really only responding to this in order to help out The Cure's poll numbers. Because they're the better band.

I am bit surprised how close this poll is, considering the longevity of The Cure compared to The Smiths.

Longevity of a band's existence is a meaningless way to judge quality. Lots of later Cure music is awful. I shudder to think what Marr and Morrissey may be doing now if they continued together. Probably the exact same stuff they did when they were The Smiths, but worse.
