Oh, I remember one more...

The last line of Necro - "You Did It" is a rip-off and alteration of one of the lines of Vanilla Ice - "Ice Ice Baby".

"Ice Ice Baby":
If there was a problem, yo, I'll solve it,
check out the hook while my DJ revolves it.

"You Did It":
If you got a problem, suicide'll solve it,
check out the hook, Bud Dwyer with a revolver...

Was listening to some William Tyler songs today and in “Cadillac Desert” heard strains (very faint strains, granted) of an acoustic version of the VU’s “Heroin”.

It's not so uncommon for the more astute rock bands to take a riff from a jazz artist and fashion a new song out of it. When the Byrds did "Eight Miles High" the opening lead guitar riff was lifted from a Coltrane sax solo.

With classical, it's a bit different. They take the entire melody and add words and an updated format to it. "Lover's Concerto" done by both the Toys and the Supremes is a straight-up rip-off of a Bach minuet. Eric Carmen's "All By Myself" was a total rip-off of Rachmaninoff.

Two songs I utterly hate that are clones are that Josh Groban "You Lift Me Up" song (don't know the actual title and don't want to) and that "Wind Beneath My Wings" song every singer does when they perform in front of soldiers or marines or whatever. Don't get me wrong, I'm a vet myself, I just hate both songs and all the more because they are clones.

P.M. Dawn's Set Adrift on A Memory Bliss is a trippy reworking of Spandau Ballet's True.

P.M. Dawn may have even lifted a recorded sample of Gary Kemp's rhythm guitar part from Spandau Ballet's original song. But the drum 'n' bass and the vocal parts are clearly P.M. Dawn's own additions. The synthesizer part used by P.M. Dawn is also very different from Tom Hadley's synthesizer on Spandau's original single. It's entirely possible that P.M. Dawn played all the instrumental parts because it's easy enough to imitate Gary Kemp's rudimentary guitar part.

I like both versions of the song, but P.M. Dawn's hip-hop makeover has a lot more going on musically, than Spandau's original version.

I think that's more of a parody than a rip-off.
