So simple, the chord progression is as basic as it can get, but it's so moving. The lyrics, the feeling he puts into it, just the atmosphere of the song.
I really like the atmosphere and textures of the Pat Garrett soundtrack in general. My favorite albums for Dylan's vocals are the '67 basement tapes (for their playfulness), Nashville Skyline (the smooth country crooning), New Morning (singing with a cold! which somehow went well with his skewed piano playing), through '74's Planet Waves -- throughout that period he toned down the nasality and his vocals became more supple and emotive.

The pat garret album just has this epic feel about the whole thing. The instrumental version of "knockin on heavens door"with the flute is so awesome.

Two of those albums you mentioned, "new morning" and "planet waves" are two of my favorite albums. I agree with what you say about his voice through that time period. He definitely moved away from that signature "speaking" vocal style he used on albums like 'highway 61' and 'blonde on blonde'. He started showin that he could really sing on 'nashville skyline'. And then there's 'desire', which featured great vocal performances, especially In the song 'one more cup of coffee'.

Hmnz, lets see what I come up with, as there's many a tune out there close to my heart.

I'd explain why I picked each of these, but I'd need a thread's worth of description to do any of 'em justice. :/

1. Gino Vannelli - Brother To Brother
2. Hawkwind - Images
3. Pat Metheny Group - To The End Of The World
4. Queensryche - Eyes Of A Stranger
5. Comus - The Herald
6. Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage
7. Pet Shop Boys - Being Boring
8. Devin Townsend - Funeral
9. Frank Zappa - I'm The Slime
10. Wang Chung - To Live And Die In L.A.

This is, of course, unbelievably difficult, but hey, I'll give it a go.

1. Summertime (Doesn't really matter which version: I love this song)
2. When will I see you again --- The Three Degrees
3. Valentine --- Ten
4. I'd love you to want me --- Lobo
5. Everybody hurts --- REM
6. Angel --- Sarah McLachlan
7. Reminiscing --- The Little River Band
8. The last resort --- Eagles
9. No bravery --- James Blunt
10. Gethsemenae (I only want to say) --- Ted Neeley, from the soundtrack to the movie "Jesus Christ Superstar".

I always thought the lyrical work in 'across the universe' is some of the best from any Beatles song.

Nice work, Neapolitan. Although a huge Genesis fan, I purposely left out any of their, or any prog band's material, as I reasoned this should be the ten songs that resonate down through my life, that I couldn't live without, that say something about me or move me in a way other songs don't, and that, should I have to choose only ten songs to have on a ipod on a desert island (with unlimited charge, of course!) I would have on that player. Though I love prog, and AOR (and metal) I could find only the one song (the one from Ten) that fit that description.

Even so, it was hard, and I know that there are many, many songs that didn't make the cut that could/should have, but that was in the end what I narrowed it down to.

Nice to see one of Agnetha's songs on your list: are her other albums good? I have only heard "I stand alone"...

I think it's one of their best work. You can have an OBE just listening to it.

Thanks. It's hard to sum up everything you like about music into just 10 songs. I wracked my brains on this trying to come up with the best list possible, but after narrowing the criteria to favotite bands and genres it became slightly easier. In the end it made sense because it is a small cross section to everything I listen to, and every song I heard I thought it was the greatest thing I ever heard, except for Chaconne that song took a little time to grow on me, but it's an incredible piece, I would think Prog amd Metal fans would like for the techinical ablility it takes to play it.

The only two must have on the list are Back Street Girl and The Fountain Of Salmacis. I think the music is just amazing.

I have Agnetha's box set of her Swedish studio albums, it is mostly her singing Schlager with a couple of an exceptions like SOS. She's back by Sven-Olof Walldoff orchestra, which is like a regular string orchestra with bass guitar and drums, not too different from the pit orchestra used for an Andrew Lloyd Weber musical, but the music is more like 60/70-ish Pop. You know she was Mary Magdeline in the Swedish verion of Jesus Chirst Superstar? I don't know if they have that released but her songs are on youtube - it's some of her finest work. If you like Agnetha and Lobo you might like Françoise Hardy

Excuse me? Some of us ARE old farts, Sir! AARP card carryin', bursitis havin', prostate puckerin', nap takin' OLD FARTS! Y'ALL wanna make something of it?!?!

Why, when I was your age, my parents weren't nearly as hip as we are now. You only wish you were this 'with it' and 'groovy'!

Maybe what we need here is a kids table like they have at Thanksgiving, where you can park the young ones and they can jabber on about their Justin Beiber what-have-you or whatever other crap music they're listening to on their EYE-pods, so the ADULTS don't have to listen to them!!!

Dang Whippersnappers!
