You've hit the nail right on the head there. If Nirvana had been about as popular as say the Melvins, they would've attained cult status and people would be constantly singing their praises on this forum as a band to check out. For a lot of people, being too popular seems to dilute a band's quality unfortunately.

I'd also heard a lot of music before hearing them, I just think their execution of the sound that they had put together fairly mind-blowing for its time, despite the fact that a lot of their base sound had been already done by the Pixies.
