And c'mon, just cause prince can play a ton of instruments it doesn't make him better than MJ, i saw 'This is it' and saw MJ as a white zombie girl all worn out still trying to pull of being MJ, and he was involved in the musical arrangements of the song, telling the guitarist what to do in some parts but also encouraging their own input. Do ppl forget MJ has been in the music business ever since he was kid!? He knows about music, aight? it's no fluke he was the king of pop! So why does prince get more musician's cred than Mj? cause he can play more instruments than Mj? that's bullsh*t cause even if he does, MJ made better songs that had more of an impact in society than Prince. |
Prince did not write all his songs or played every single instrument in ALL his songs.

it does matter to some extent but it's not the defining factor that makes you a good musician. And that's the whole point man, it's not how many instruments you can play but rather how many ppl liked your songs and the influence your musical career has had on the music industry and pop culture. |
"How many people liked your songs"?
So does that mean Celine Dion is like the sixth or seventh greatest artist of all-time? Well, I'll tell you one thing, The Colour of My Love really gets my tearducts working, know what I'm sayin'? |

I would say Prince, YES it's arguably a better musician than MJ because he mastered a couple of instruments, but Mj though not a strong musician as prince is a better entertainer. And the thing is MJ knew how to arrange songs just like prince, they both had that knowledge |
Michael Jackson also gave us at least a decade of pedophilia and 'black boy turned white woman' jokes to laugh about. So for that, I thank him.

Sooner or later this thread was bound to get derailed...
|
I don't get the compare. Prince is a legend. There is no comparison
|
Prince, totally. I'll go ahead and agree that MJ is the superior entertainer but he's not nearly as talented. Thriller, Billie Jean, Smooth Criminal - they're all good songs but IMO the videos are what most of MJ's legacy is all about and he wasn't the one creating them. On the other hand Prince's songs don't need the visuals - and he's written classics for other people too.
|
Harggh! Would have loved to see MJ involved in a non pop record.
I can rememberer his vocal aggressivity on tracks like Jam and other... To me it was as shilling as some Tom Waits stuff. Can you imagine him singing about something truly personal using that voice instead of pretending that he wants to save the world... Even a freakish theme.... I think we would be close to proper artistry. There can be no denial that he had it all... Prince made more with his ability and also got a good few pop hits. |

I don't know what you mean by freakish but I recommend you to give it a listen to Morphine, Superfly Sister or even HIStory, in case you don't know them. As regards the thread, I chose MJ of course. I really admire Prince and I think his unknown songs are far better than his hits. I mean, he's got many songs much better than When Doves Cry, Kiss or Purple Rain. Kiss especially is too much overrated (so is When Doves Cry). On the other hand, I just love MJ's music. I love those unknown songs such as Monkey Business, We've Had Enough, Al Capone, Work That Body. Not to mention his hits. They just had different skills, one plays better while the other dances better but what's important to me is that both were very original composers (yes, MJ did compose his songs) and I admire them both (although I like more MJ's music by far). |
Prince was always a bit more different than MJ, I prefer the more funk sound Prince has
|
Michael Jackson has billie jean and thriller but does he have raspberry beret.... I didn't think so.
|
Michael Jackson and Prince were friends. In fact MJ went to some Prince shows to do his would have been tribute tour.
|
Friends is a bit of an exaggeration but they actually liked and respected each other contrary to the media feud that was perpetuated. There was a friendly rivalry between the two but they really admired each other.
MJ did attend a few of Prince shows and Prince covers a lot of MJ/Jackson 5 material in his live shows. MJ really wanted to work with Prince on the BAD album but Prince declined and said that it would be a hit record without him. They had a few meetings, played some ping pong and chatted it up. Both are legends but we already know who the KANG is! |

I prefer MJ. They each are there own thing going.

Michael Jackson for the length of discography. Prince is a genius unto himself though.

Quote:
Prince has about 30 odd albums? Or do you mean timespan? EDIT - Even timespan doesn't work, MJ released his first solo album in 1971 and his last in 2001 - 30 years. You can add another two years if you're counting Jackson 5 albums. Prince released his first album in 1978 and his most recent in 2014 - 38 years. |

Good point Prince released way more albums than Michael but imo Michael has more classics. |
Having thoroughly examined MJ's catalogue it's hard not to think what genius many of compositions are that he wrote, composed, arranged and produced (exceptions include "Rock With You", "Off The Wall", "She's Out Of My Life", "Thriller", "Human Nature", "P.Y.T.", "Man In The Mirror", "You Are Not Alone" among others). As a songwriter he was brilliant at evoking pathos to communicate and translate to his audience the feel of every word. His use of different writing styles such as dramatic prose to create tension and suspense in songs such as "Who Is It" and "Billie Jean", narrative/storytelling to unravel tales metaphorical of his own life experiences in songs like "Price Of Fame" and "Heartbreak Hotel", monologues/soliloquies to reveal inner turmoil and contradictions in songs such "Dangerous" and "Will You Be There", and stream-of-consciousness to evoke a sense of urgency and desperation in songs like "Jam" and "Tabloid Junkie". He also covered many themes in his lyrics from the femme fatale is tales such "Dirty Diana" to more serious socially-conscious anthems from the Cold War-era inspired " Be Not Always", ecological destruction in "Earth Song" to anti-war sentiments in "We've Had Enough". He also employed other nifty tricks to enhanced the listening experience or advantage or coda the the song's narrative like spoken raps, rapping, beatboxing (including as part of arrangements) and scat singing. Just listen to the first 20 songs and realise how vast the genres, styles, themes and overall soundscapes and production are:
Billie Jean This Place Hotel Don't Stop Til' You Get Enough Smooth Criminal Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' Morphine Stranger Moscow Earth Song Another Part Of Me Jam Dirty Diana In The Back They Don't Care About Us Who Is It That's What You Get (For Being Polite) Will You Be There Workin' Day and Night Give In To Me Money Little Susie Sunset Driver Is It Scary Ghosts Blues Away Blood On The Dance Floor Can You Feel It Things I Do For You Shake Your Body Dangerous Black or White Remember The Time She Drives Me Wild Can't Let Her Get Away We Are Here To Change World In The Closet State of Shock Superfly Sister Tabloid Junkie Beat It Cheater Price Of Fame Be Not Always Push Me Away Bless His Soul Childhood Sacred Of The Moon Much Too Soon Destiny HiStory D.S. Bad The Way You Make Me Feel The Girl Is Mine 2Bad Mind Is The Magic This Time Around Liberian Girl Leave Me Alone Streetwalker Abortion Papers Serious Effect Someone Put Your Hand Out Do You Know Where Your Children Are Monkey Business I Just Can't Stop Loving You Fly Away Free I'm So Blue Men In Black Loving You Whatever Happens Shout We've Had Enough Behind The Mask Give It Up Lovely One Walk Right Now Everybody Got The Hots All Night Dancin' Prince Songs: 1999 Controversy Darling Nikki Little Red Corvette Let's Go Crazy I wanna Be Your Lover Purple Rain Kiss Paisley Park Dirty Mind When Doves Cry Sign o' the Times |
Both are brilliant.

Its like comparing Messi and Ronaldo
Has to be Micheal. Hes the Messi of the music world. |

LOL why are you so retarded?....Michael Jackson's songs are listenable by everyone...most of prince's songs dont appeal to the wider audience..its more an acquired taste. Its easy to determine whos greater...You will simply have to ask third world countries about these 2 and i guarantee you..GUARANTEE...that they wont even know who prince is...but they will know who MJ is. Prince is certainly a great entertainer and is immensely popular but hes nothing 0 compared to MJ. So i dont know what nonsense your talking about when your implying prince is this huge global phenomenon and is better and greater than MJ....you have brain dmg im sorry. Its like saying Floydmayweather is the greatest of all time and not Ali...yes hes 49-0 but hes nowhere close to being as great as ali...Thats the same kind of **** ur pulling here with your nonsensical banter about being a multi- instrumentalist and what not...rubbish. Boxing = Ali Golf = Tiger woods and im sorry to disappoint your garbage statement but MUSIC = MJ....your a minority vote in this comparison. |
That post was 3 years old.
|
MJ for the masses. Prince for me on a deserted island.
Edit: ****. Got caught in a necro'd thread. |
