The Rolling Stones. For some reason, as a young man, I never gave them a chance. In my bias, I just assumed the Beatles are better. Perhaps they were for me at that time, but things have changed, and as I've grown older, I am liking The Rolling Stones more and more. Aftermath, Let It Bleed, Exile on Main Street etc...they've eclipsed the Beatles in my estimation.

The appetite alters.

I also blew the Stones off when I was younger. A few years back I finally "got it". I'm not a fan of their early stuff or the late 70s and onward stuff. But the 4 albums produced by Jimmy Miller are all amazing.

Beggar's Banquet.
Let it Bleed.
Sticky Fingers.
Exile on Main St.

The Stones were able to take American Gospel, Country, and Folk, and stir them together with their Cocky British Blues/Rock roots to create something really special during that period. And Miller was the icing on the cake with his use of female backing singers, horns, orchestration, etc. He really was to The Stones on those albums what Martin was to The Beatles.

The Rolling Stones are the greatest garage band of all time IMO. Loose, unpolished, cocky and self assured, sloppy at times, but they managed to put it all together and create a sound that is uniquely theirs.

Two of my Faves:

Scorsese used this so well in Goodfellas.

Love how this one just keeps building and building up. Miller's orchestration once things get going is killer.

If you can't dig early Stones then you're a rock poseur.

The other great thing about LIB, SFs, and EOMS, is they feature a young and hungry Mick Taylor. That makes those my top 3 of the 4 listed.

Another great track: The story behind the recording of this album is pretty nuts.

Not saying I won't get into those albums at some point, but I'm just not that big a fan of the folk elements that they incorporated. I like the early stuff for its raw simplicity. I love the dirtier British Invasion bands for that reason, like early Stones, early Small Faces, and the Animals.

I recently got into Mother Mother. They're pretty good, and I like playing some of their songs. It's fun.
