How much of the music you liked as a teenager do you listen to today?

I realize there's already a similar thread, but I believe this is different enough to justify its existence.

Quite simply, how much of the music you liked when you were a teenager do you still listen to?

Thelonious Monkey 11-15-2014 07:06 AM

I am still a teenager, but when I first really started listening to music, Nu-Metal was where I began. I occasionally listen to the odd Nickelback song for nostalgia reasons, and the odd rap metal song, but other than a song, I just can't enjoy it any more.

Chula Vista 11-15-2014 07:43 AM

Not much actually. Heck, I haven't listened to a Zeppelin CD in ages. Thing is, the occasional play on the radio while I'm out driving around is enough of a fix for a lot of my old classic rock band faves.

CoNtrivedNiHilism 11-15-2014 07:48 AM

There's a large chunk of music or bands I really never listen to anymore from when I was a teenager. Some of it is nu-metal, some of it is metal, some of it is hard rock, some of it is classic rock, so on and so forth. Taste in music does change as you age, even if it is just somewhat.

grindy 11-15-2014 07:53 AM

None.

Goofle 11-15-2014 08:49 AM

There's really only a select few artists that I listen to on a repeated basis, and of those only The Stone Roses qualify as music I listened to regularly as a teen. So to be honest, I don't really get around to listening to much of what I listened to in my teen years.

But when I do eventually pop on some Kings of Leon/Cage the Elephant/popular Hip Hop of that time etc., I usually end up enjoying it.

I have a love/hate relationship with Kings of Leon. I like them one week, then hate them the next. I don't know why that is. Sex On Fire is a good tune.

GuD 11-15-2014 09:08 AM

I still listen to plenty of music i liked as a teenager from 13-16, 17-19 was dirty crustpunk days and I don't look back on them fondly. I haven't really changed much. Now I just work instead of going to school. With some stuff though I do have to be in the mood for it. I'd lke to think I had/have pretty good taste. Still love The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, My Bloody Valentine, Bauhaus, Jawbreaker, Descendents, absolutely love Black Lips, Dinosaur Jr, Hot Snakes, Ovens (from SF), Pixies, Ramones, Superchunk, Ty Segall, Velvet Underground, Buzzcocks... just off the top of my head. There's plenty of bands I listen to now that I either just didn't know about at the time or that didn't come out while I was a teen that I would've loved then too.

Their first three albums are great to me. The fourth is okay.

I've only dabbled in the first two, I think. And maybe I have heard a song or two from their others.

Janszoon 11-15-2014 10:38 AM

I'd say I still like pretty much all the music I liked as a teenager but I don't listen to it very often simply because I listened to it so much back then.

Isbjørn 11-15-2014 10:42 AM

Well, all of it, for obvious reasons.

Rexx Shredd 11-15-2014 10:51 AM

Most of it...there are certain bands and songs that i listened to SO much back then that the songs are burnt into my brain with such clarity and detail, that I really don't need to dig back on them......but i do like revisiting my teenage songs/albums/artists and I will do so several times a year

Frownland 11-15-2014 10:53 AM

I listen to most of it but then again I'm only a year out of the woods of being a teenager so who knows how long that'll hold up. Captain Beefheart has been my favourite since I was fifteen though so that's a start.

Ha! The question is a bit loaded.

It's been 35 years since I was a teenager!

James 11-15-2014 10:59 AM

Still a teenager for a little while at least.
I still adore PIxies with every inch of my being. Radiohead too.
Must say though, I can't remember the last time I listened to The Clash and they were my favourite band for years. Quite sad actually.

Very little. My love for ABBA is really the only thing that survived to see an almost-daily basis of listening.

Everything I would have listened to as a teenager (Pat Benatar, The Cars, Bread, Bon Jovi, assorted hair metal bands, top tunes of the 1980s, etc.) comes to light either when I'm drunk or in need of a nostalgic fix.

(Though, to be fair, I found Sparks when I was 19.)

Key 11-15-2014 12:22 PM

The music is still there from when I was younger, but over the years, my music taste has evolved. I still listen to them for nostalgia sake, however.

Funny it was the same for Korn and System of a Down were huge for me

Frownland 11-15-2014 03:49 PM

The Batlord still listens to Manowar so I'm going to post 'I still listen to the music I listened to in high school' on his behalf.

Musicwhore A-Z 11-15-2014 04:38 PM

I PROUDLY continue to listen to the music from my teen years. Of course, some more than others. Likewise, there's music that grew on me as well as time went on. Personally, the word "nostalgia" makes me CRINGE! Good music will ALWAYS stand the test of time ( :thumb:...:hphones: )!

Zhanteimi 11-15-2014 04:53 PM

I was a teenager in the 90s, but even then I listened to a lot of Beatles and Grateful Dead. Still listen to them occasionally.

Norg 11-16-2014 08:23 PM

Zombeels 11-16-2014 10:35 PM

As a teenager I listened to the Beatles. I still listen to them.

misspoptart 11-17-2014 03:36 AM

All of it. I'm 25 and I love all music. I also still listen to stuff I listened to from well before my teenage years.

Interesting thread. I had no idea there were people who could abandon music they liked as a teenager, considering that it is such a formative time in your life and for many it's one thing that keeps them going through those dark years.

Carpe Mortem 11-17-2014 05:57 AM

Most of it gets play on occasion, nostalgia is very powerful in my life. I've even tried to defend some of the ****tier bands, but at the end of the day if I heard something almost identical I'd think it was horrible. Its just nostalgia.

I also was and continue to be really into movie soundtracks, having a specific scene to music tends to grind it deeper into your psyche.

Haha, yes! The dark years of adolescence! I´m surprised to hear that you suffered any of those, misspoptart.
For myself, I remember a time when music wasn´t just a pleasure or diversion, it was a necessary psychological defense against an uncaring world.

Yes, that overlay of nostalgia can be really powerful, and although I rarely listen to music from my teenage years, there are a few favourite songs that instantly take me back. This one, for instance, - Gerry Rafferty´s homage to an old artist friend- is just like biting a fork and hitting a nerve:-

EPOCH6 11-17-2014 09:42 AM

12 - 16 consisted entirely of metal, primarily thrash, traditional classic metal, and classic rock.
16 - 18 consisted entirely of hardcore punk and crust.

I still enjoy most of the bands I was listening to in high school but my primary taste in music is much different now.

A fair amount while whittling away some of the so-so '90's bands I could just as easily turn on the radio at noon if I ever wanted to listen to them again. I mean I started listening to Killing Joke at 15 and 4 of the 6 CD's in my CD changer are KJ albums. Probably the one band I've had the biggest falling out with was Metallica, but like Jansz said, it has more to do with just listening to them so much as a teenager that I don't really feel like it now.

ribbons 11-17-2014 12:38 PM

I still listen to most of the music I listened to as a teenager, the staples being Beatles, Beach Boys, Velvet Underground, Dylan, Roxy Music, Eno, Television, Talking Heads. I don't listen to much country music now (I was raised on and listened to a lot of '60s/'70s country music as a teen), rarely listen to Joni Mitchell or Led Zeppelin (used to be an ardent fan of both) and almost never listen to The Clash and Sex Pistols these days.

Wpnfire 11-17-2014 03:25 PM

All of it.

Screen13 11-17-2014 03:42 PM

Almost all of it, with very few exceptions. Being a Teen of The 80's who was actually looking out for great new music that was not listened to by any of my neighbors in Small Dot, there's a collection of good and bad I still dig out. I won't admit much to those who I liked in very small doses in passing before I was made aware of what I was listening to.

There's a number of crappy albums set in some dark corner in my collection reminding me that I had the luck to actually buy great albums like The Smith's Hatful of Hallow and Japan's Gentlemen Take Polaroids one day, two albums that pointed me towards my late Teen years in terms of style and substance, and friends who pointed me to harder sounds that saved me from wishing I had a time machine to bring me back to the days when "If You Leave" was popular in The States - instead I would love to revisit a closed Porno Theater, a huge one with a stage (it used to be a First Run movie theater back in The 50's!), watching The UK Subs and Broken Bones which might not have been the highlight of my life musically, but seriously one that I enjoyed going to and hearing every power chord thrashed into my ears as a finale to the final days as a Teen.

The dumped list is as follows - A lot of New Wave from 1985-7 that aimed for the US market (Looking at you, Crush and Pacific Age-era OMD!), some crappy Pop music styled as modern (Yes, "Shadows of the Night" by Pat Bennitar...just plain NO! "Bette Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes...did I really like that one?), and some AOR, although I will not mention which ones. If anyone mentions my two month interest in Urban Cowboy Country (hey, I was seriously in depression when the REAL W4 left the air to change into a Country station), then at least it was just a phase that was needed to show that I was certainly not a citizen of where I grew up as a Teen in. Maybe I could throw in Spandeau Ballet, but I won't be that harsh...and you know that much is true!

DriveYourCarDownToTheSea 11-17-2014 07:59 PM

Even though I haven't been a teenager since 1984, I still listen to a surprising amount of the stuff I listened to back then. Probably not as much of it as I used to, but even the stuff I listen to only rarely nowadays I still like, it's just ceased to be a core thing I listen to. I'd say about 40% of the stuff I listened to regularly as a teenager, I still regularly (or semi-regularly) listen to now. Most (not all) of the other 60% I still like but don't listen to much anymore.

Neapolitan 11-17-2014 10:23 PM

I like a lot of stuff I heard as a teenager. I guess I am lucky that I grew up in a family that were partial to music. I had grandparents, uncles, cousins who were musicians. My father had a small album collection. My mother liked old movies (which had music in them). So even before I became a teen I was expose to a decent amount of music. My brothers and I became musicians/album collectors. I like a lot of what I heard as a teen and I think it is still (some of) the best music I ever heard - I'm tearing up from nostalgia. *sniffle* It was then when I was a teen I realized I only like 0.001% that was out there and the secret was to find that 0.001% that is worth listening to.

Jathon Delsy 12-10-2014 10:34 AM

Reggae Religation

As a teenager I used to listen to lots of reggae, especially dub, such a "Scientist", "Sly and Robbie" , "Yellowman", lots of earthy Jamaican stuff. It went well, most easily and smoothly, with my, ahem, herbally inspired stoned perceptions.
Now I'm a man (of sorts), as sober as porridge, I never listen to such laid back grooves, I'm far too impatient and ambitious, although I still think it sounds good, albeit not quite as good as it use to sound.

DeadChannel 12-11-2014 12:56 AM

I still am a teenager - wonder what I'll listen to in twenty years

Still a teenager too, so I also have no idea.
