My friend collects cassettes because his car doesn't have a cd player, only a tape deck. The other people I know (2) who collect cassettes are pretentious harsh noise twats who think that cassettes are the only true medium for music.

Hey, no idea I was coming off as uptight. I thought this was mainly a casual discussion too. I don't actually own vinyl (lack of money), but I appreciate it's value as a medium.

That being said, I do have to agree that vinyl only releases are a bit ****ty.

My fault then, man. Hard to tell the tone over the internet.

I didn't know bands still did vinyl only releases. If they do, that's terrible marketing on their part.

I still have a whole bunch of cassettes, though I rarely listen to them anymore.

Yeah, they do deteriorate with age, but I always liked the compact format. Was a bit bummed when CD's became the thing because a Diskman was bigger than a Walkman and didn't fit into my coat pocket as well.

Man, I remember the days of walking around with a CD player in my pocket. And it would constantly skip because I didn't have it upright.

Those days were last year for me, didn't have a phone.

Personally I fucking hate vinyl but the only thing that really irritates me about this whole resurgence is that people make a point of telling you they bought an album on vinyl as if you're supposed to be impressed by it.

I've said it before and (guess what?) I'm going to say it again: many people --- not all, but many --- are seeing vinyl through nostalgia glasses. I collected it when I was young because I had no other choice, but when CDs came out I was delighted. Here are some of the drawbacks of vinyl:

1. Large and therefore take up a lot of space for a collection
2. You can't grab tracks off them (unless you record onto a cassette): who's going to go to the trouble of putting on an album for one track?
3. They warp easily (don't leave them near your radiator!)
4. They easily scratch if you're not careful and generally, once a scratch is there it's not coming out
5. They require a lot of care and handlng
6. You can only play them on one medium, so you need to have a turntable. If you have a turntable you need also an amp and speakers, so it's an expensive necessity for someone who doesn't already have one
7. You have to turn them around to get at the second side
8. You can't download them
9. You can't take them with you --- to hear an album you have to be in the same room as the turntable
10. There's more expense associated with them: dust cloths, new stylii, needles etc.

Enough for ya?
Not saying everything about LPs is bad, of course not, but the fact that the above are ignored in favour of the "better" aspects of vinyl constantly amazes me. As someone who lived through having this as their only choice, to me it's kind of as stupid as someone waxing nostalgic over black and white telly or computers with less than 40 meg of ram....

I think number 8 on your list is the main concern for bands/performers and labels releasing new vinyl recordings.

And then you ask them about their collection, what their favorites are, what they've been looking for, etc. and they absolutely have no love or passion for it at all. They just buy the records for the sake of telling people they have them and it's infuriating when you just want to have a conversation with someone who really enjoys the thrill of the hunt.
