Artists you've discovered thanks to MB members

I've done a search and found nothing so if this thread already exists then burn me at the stake for I have sinned.

Pixies - Been hammering Doolittle recently. Really enjoying this, decided to check them out thanks to Black Francis's fanboyism and I'm glad I did.

Chula Vista 02-25-2015 12:13 PM

Prong thanks to Batlord.

Cuthbert 02-25-2015 12:18 PM

Tis yeah although I've nothing to give.

Guess this will have to be locked.

EDIT - Since you mentioned Batty he got me into some nice Nazi metal so cheers pal.

Mondo Bungle 02-25-2015 12:20 PM

thank goodness

Carpe Mortem 02-25-2015 12:42 PM

A lot.

Since MB is right above me, he got me into Sigh. Excellent stuff.

Mondo Bungle 02-25-2015 12:44 PM

I did?

Carpe Mortem 02-25-2015 12:45 PM

I think so, one of my first plug sessions

Overcast 02-25-2015 01:46 PM

I find a lot of stuff just by scanning through journals or posts. I went through my Last.fm and recalled some artists I remember finally checking out due to MB. Only maybe 2 or 3 of them were directly recommended to me. Putting down names and other info if I can remember the source.

Andrew Jackson Jihad (machine) - I knew them already, but had never listened - now a favorite in my library
Animal Collective (???) - I knew them already, but had never listened - turning into one of my favorites as of late
Arcade Fire (machine) - I knew and listened to them a bit already, but checked them out more in depth - need to keep checking them out, but love it
Beck (mordwyr) - I knew and listened to them a bit already, but checked them out more in depth - need to keep checking them out, but love it
Buddy Holly (???) - First time hearing about them - need to keep checking them out
Burzum (???) - I knew them already, but had never listened - got me exploring the black metal genre, and I'm lovin' it
Converge (???) - I knew them already, but had never listened - reminds me of TDEP, love it
Fleet Foxes (pet_sounds) - I knew them already, but had never listened - need to keep checking them out
Grandaddy (janszoon) - I knew and listened to them already, but hadn't listened to them in years - now a favorite in my library
Leonard Cohen (???) - I knew them already, but had never listened - now a favorite in my library
Madvillain (machine) - I knew them already, but had never listened - wasn't too pulled in first listen, need to keep checking them out
Molly Drake (??? plug.dj) - First time hearing about them - real nice, love at first listen
My Bloody Valentine (???) - I knew them already, but had never listened - need to keep checking them out, but it has gotten me more into shoegaze
Neurosis (???) - First time hearing about them - need to keep checking them out
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds (???) - I knew them already, but had never listened - need to keep checking them out
O'Death (goofle) - First time hearing about them - need to keep checking them out
Paysage d'Hiver (mondo bungle) - First time hearing about them - vocals turned me off at first, but i'm diggin' it now
Primus (frownland) - First time hearing about them - now a favorite in my library
Slint (exo_) - I knew them already, but had never listened - now a favorite in my library and of all time
Slowdive (goofle) - I knew them already, but had never listened - now a favorite in my library
The Angels of Light (josef k) - I knew them already, but had never listened - loving it
The Doors (???) - I knew them already, but had never listened - need to keep checking them out
The United States of America (???) - First time hearing about them - need to keep checking them out
Ty Segall (??? plug.dj) - First time hearing about them - need to keep checking them out

I'm missing a lot, I'm sure. I seem to know a whole lot more artists than I actually listen to. That tells me I have a lot of catching up to do. Gah. Not a single artist I've listened to from here that I disliked.

I'll be checking out Captain Beefheart, Mac DeMarco, Elizabeth Cotten and some more Bjork tonight thanks to Frownland, Machine, Goofle and grtwhtgrvty.

I don't know how I remember half this ****.

DriveYourCarDownToTheSea 02-25-2015 01:47 PM

Animal Collective (directly) and basically every recent band (indirectly) courtesy of Surrel.

Frownland 02-25-2015 01:49 PM

^I'm always repping USA but I've seen Josef K and Mondo do it as well. Kinda surprised you hadn't heard of Primus before tbh.

I listened exclusively to nu-metal and metalcore up until very late 2013. I've only had little over a year to start getting into music seriously, so I'm not that surprised.

Ah ok. They're pretty popular and got a lot of radio play with Too Many Puppies and My Name Is Mud, plus with them doing the South Park theme I figured that they were a household name.

Chula Vista 02-25-2015 02:26 PM

Got turned on to Kiev and Snarky Puppy via Plug.

Zyrada 02-25-2015 02:49 PM

I'd never listened to Swans when I first made an account here. I might not even have heard of them at that point, but I dug into their discography a bit before The Seer was released. And now they've fallen squarely into indie hipster whipping boy territory.

There's been more that that, but Swans is definitely the most listened-to addition to my library that I can clearly and distinctly blame on MB.

Silver is a great song! Why does everybody hate it? :(

Cause it's horrible, it's like a boring old western flick and the vocals reach an annoying pitch that makes me wonder what the hell were they thinking putting that on an actual album.. that B-side stuff at best.

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-25-2015 04:31 PM

Pet Sounds needs some Hawkwind & Roxy Music in his life so I get another credit.

Nooooo the early stuff with Eno FTW

Frownland 02-25-2015 05:50 PM

Urban speaks the truth.

Chula Vista 02-25-2015 05:55 PM

I like it all but Avalon is their masterpiece IMO. Plus it's the best sex album ever.

Candles, champagne, and Avalon = An awesome time in the sack.

I can never thank Pete enough for introducing me to O'Death. They've really come to occupy a very special, bittersweet place in my ongoing music rotation.

I also can't thank bob enough for turning me on to Whores. I think I've probably listened to their first EP more times than any other EP I've ever owned, no exaggeration.

Jade_City 02-25-2015 07:17 PM

Dont forget Azymuth

Key 02-25-2015 08:13 PM

Glad to hear Devin Townsend is going well with you PS.

Frownland 02-25-2015 08:22 PM

MrDood turned me on to Labor Days and Madvillainy, two of my favourite emcees right there. I wonder where the Dood has been?

Living life. I have him on Facebook. Seems to be doing well.

I'm still not into his more extreme stuff, but Ghost is a phenomenal album and he's a great producer.

Ghost is absolute perfection. His production quality is always top notch.

YorkeDaddy 02-25-2015 08:50 PM

For a good two years of my life just about every album I decided to download was discovered while wandering this board specifically, so there are too many to name here

A couple examples that spring to mind are a bunch of Goofle's favorite stuff (but not lana [puke]) like the auteurs and aesop rock is cool

I also checked out a ton of stuff that this guy raved about but he hasn't posted in 2 years so
Music Banter - View Profile: streetwaves

And then of course some cool experimental stuff that I got into from Frownland like This Heat and Madvillain.

Also Ninetales posts a ton of cool stuff in the ambienty genres and I've loved a lot of it

That's just off the top of my head

Key 02-25-2015 08:57 PM

I'll do my best to remember who got me into what:

Mojo and Loathsome Pete I believe got me into Agalloch and Anathema. I think Janszoon.mentioned Igorrr somewhere and I instantly loved it. Frownland and Mondo's projects are fantastic and I love them for it. LiL got me into Roxy Music, so groovy And good.

On top of that, everyone here had made me realize through the years that I should never be ashamed of what I listen to, because the genres I like tend to have a bunch of bands that others listen to that I end up really enjoying.

I'm obviously missing a bunch of people.
